  • One of my highly requested tutorial for PS2 nerds is finally here! Today I will show you how to use the raspberry pi 4 and do smb share with your PS2 games on USB over Ethernet using psx-pi-smbshare courtesy to toolboc at github. Enjoy!
Note: This video assumes you already know how to use a raspberry pi 4 and install a linux image of your choice. Then we run the following code:
    cd ~
    wget -O setup.sh raw.githubuser...
    chmod 755 setup.sh
    sudo ./setup.sh
Once code is completed, insert your usb flash drive that has your ps2 games, and then OPL will see them under your Ethernet tab.

For anyone curious, this works flawlessly with Pi 3's. I have a 3b+ and i was able to just write Raspberry Pi OS onto it, do exactly what he did in the video with that apt code, and then boom just plugged it into my PS2 as a test and it great. Plus you get the added benefits of SMB Sharing and Putty! Thanks for the great video like always versatile!

What i did to get it working on a raspberry Pi 4 was i installed the latest raspberry Pi os 64bit. Pluged in the ethernet cable from the router for internet and didnt set up the wifi.i ran the scripts with my blank usb drive inserted. It creates the folders for you. Put my game into DVD folder and set my network settings to the screen shot but i changed the ip address, which can be found in the raspberry Pi desktop top right corner. And pluged a regular ethernet cable from the pi to the ps2.

Great video. Im gonna do this soon since all my "backup" dvd games are skipping (dying laser i bet). Are both the speed of the usb ports and ethernet port on the Pi important ? Id imagine older Pi's with usb1.0 and 2.0 would be slower right? Or is the speed / performance of the games running purely based on the speed of the the ethernet port ?

Kinda glad i dind't shell on out a 2nd RPi4 lol. I take it instead of a 64GB USB stick, i could use a external hard drive hooked up to the Pi's USB port instead ? Can't see it being any different...

"why using usb?" in my case because my 16gb sd card has no more space after installing Rasbian for a 2gb/4gb/8gb Ps2 game
"if to use usb then run it directly from ps2"
No, the usb is used as a store unit plus, the raspberry pi (4 in my case) usb is better than the Ps2 one. The games still runs as fast as if the game its store on the sd card, meaning, the game runs full speed via smd ;)

I have a 1tb external hardrive. 200gb are full with Ps2 and Ps1 roms, 800gb with some other things. I couldnt make it work so i contact the dev. He told me that i may not work because the hard drive should only have the Opl folders and nothing else. Since i have no more space on my pc internal hard drive, in order to put those 800gb from the external hard drive into my internal hard drive and leave the external one with just the games, i couldnt test that solution. If you already own the formatted HDD, give it a try and please let me know if it works ;)
