How To Make Dramedy Music For Television: Keep It Simple!

- One of the biggest mistakes aspiring tv music composers make is adding too much content. Most music for tv is very simple, after all it is usually in the background underneath dialogue. In this video I walk through a dramedy cue I wrote over three years ago, one that has seen multiple placements since then, and show the specific elements needed to create this genre.

DUDE.....over the years, I composed Funk, I composed Latin, I tried my hand at Cinematic/Orchestral, and had little to no success. I once gave Dramedy a shot, but the instructor did NOT follow the K.I.S.S. method, and I gave up. Roughly, about a week ago, I was ready to throw in the towel on Sync music. Then I came across this video, followed it, and I'm not just making this up, but today I composed and finished the BEST Sync cue I EVER created. Now I have a simple blueprint to follow. Thanks Bro.
YES! Comments like yours are why I do this. So happy for your success!
I'm an editor for television. I would use it. Reduced and not distracting.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've just been approached by a 'dramedy' library and this was very useful, thank you!
Thanks for sharing, Paul! Your tracks were a great reference when we were writing urban comedy for the Kardashians (the good 'ol days!)
Ah yes... the memories. They are still showing up on my royalty statements! :)
Great Video, Paul! Thanks for putting it together. I would love to see more videos on writing library music from you!
Great video. Thanks for explaining as the song goes along. Really appreciate it.
Wow...super simple. Less IS more.
Thanks!
Hey Paul. Would you please shed some light on how you organize yourself, your studio, your computer, your external hard drive(s), your business and paperwork with regard to sync? I know that's probably a lot but, there are song sessions that are finished and some that are not! There is paperwork to keep track of. Libraries to keep track of and templates to keep track of - etc. How do you do it? What are your strategies for keeping track of all of this?
I love this idea! I’ll put that on my list and try to crank that out asap.
Hey Kenneth, giving you a headsuip that I cerated a video that will drop on Wednesday that answers part of your question: My studio setup as far as hardware, storage, interfaces, etc. I'll do a second video about folder structure and organization. :)
Thanks for the advice! are you willing to help me navigate the world of sync?
Happy to help if I can... hit me up via email from my web site.
@@YoPaulieMusic you’re the man.
@@YoPaulieMusic done!
Do these kind of tracks get placed on stock libraries or exclusive ones please ?
Most of my music is signed by exclusive libraries, I prefer doing that because it keeps this simple from a paperwork and tracking perspective. I don't have any music in royalty free/stock libraries. I've got music in nearly 40 libraries, but I only actively write for less than ten of them, and lately I've been focusing on just 3-4 of them.
@@YoPaulieMusic wow thanks for that! Im just starting out and dont have. Clue what different types of tracks do different libraries(stock/non exclusive / exckusive) take. So with the kind of track in this vid, its placed on tv series and film right? Or is it for reality tv mostly you'd say?
@@altheaattard9773 It's a fun/exciting/frustrating journey that you are starting on! My channel is largely aimed at helping people in your exact situation, so be sure you scroll through my videos, I'm sure you will find some helpful content here. ;)
As far as music goes, you never really know where it will end up once signed by a library. I am writing to create tv music, mostly instrumental music. Two of my tracks ended up in feature films, which was nice, but I was never writing for film specifically. (One was a classical string quartet public domain Christmas song, the other was a classic jazz quartet balla). So, my goal is to write music for specific moods, based on what my library clients are looking for, which sometimes comes to me in the form of a music brief. The brief describes what the supervisor or editor is looking for and I aim for that.
