- A wealthy man is interested in a young boy.
SECRET CHILD is used with permission from Yew Weng Ho. Learn more at secretchild.com.
Gordon is a young boy growing up in 1950s Dublin. Even for the time, he has an unusual childhood: he has grown up in a Regina Coeli hostel for unmarried mothers, run by nuns and sheltered from the larger world. Regina Coeli was both a haven and a prison in many ways, but Gordon has started to wander beyond its walls, where he gets in fights with the other kids. But he's still surrounded by lots of love, cared for by his mother Cathleen, who works hard to give Gordon the best childhood possible.
His small world begins to shift when he and his mother meet up with a man named Bill for dinner. Bill is obviously wealthy, and quite interested in Gordon, who approaches this new acquaintance with great enthusiasm. But even with this first encounter, the small, cloistered world of mother and son begins to shift, even as it promises broader horizons.
Based on the bestselling book of the same name by writer and executive producer Gordon Lewis, this sensitive historical family drama -- directed by Yew Weng Ho, from a screenplay by Ho, Lewis and Sam Hoare -- captures both the challenges and pleasures of a unique childhood and a particular time and place. With its carefully composed, evocative images and an almost stately sense of craftsmanship, the often luminous images have a classicism that also matches the elegant, measured storytelling.
The narrative beautifully evokes the tension between innocence and travail in childhood, capturing both the wide-eyed spirit of kids while taking seriously the complexities of their emotional dilemmas and difficulties. Gordon isn't aware of his mother's romantic past in all its complexities, but his social status slowly dawns on him as he gets older and is able to observe other children growing up differently. The writing handles this growing awareness with great sensitivity, allowing viewers both to understand Gordon's POV while hinting at the broader social pressures and mores that shape his life.
The heart of the film, though, belongs to Gordon's loving relationship with his mother. Cathleen faces the stresses of providing for her young son on her own, but despite it all, the pair are deeply connected. Actors Fiona Glascott and Austin Taylor have a palpable bond with one another, and Glascott especially captures the many facets of a loving mother with a complicated romantic past -- and a resulting set of hardships -- that she tries not to burden her child with. But ultimately it's her love for Gordon -- and her desire to make sure he lacks for nothing -- that causes her to reach back out to Bill and change the balance of their life moving forward.
Based on a true story, SECRET CHILD covers the first part of Gordon's journey -- a second book, Secret to Sultan, has just been released -- but his particular chapter is ultimately a tribute to an extraordinary mother, who strives to make sure her son doesn't lack for love, even as they struggle as the "secret family" in a society that would rather pretend they don't exist. This secrecy and denial may preserve the placid surfaces of "decency" for society at large, but it comes at a great personal cost for those it hides from view. While the promising ending belies an air of mystery that portends a more complicated story going forward, one thing is certain: Cathleen's love for her son is the bedrock of their life together, offering a strong foundation that will launch an even stranger odyssey in the future. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

There is a reason she apologized for not returning the letters, she was opening in beginning. He may have drank too much ( still does?) Single mothers usually are irresponsible women who connect with bad men, and thus these women show a lack of ability to judge characters, or a lack of ability to keep their feet closed. I do not know if your mother was an exception, but most of cases it is the woman that is equally to blame along with the man. And for a child to grow up without a father figure, it is bad. Go and watch the channels "Think before you Sleep" , and "Better Bachelor" , that have some videos about such things.
@@georgiosdoumas2446 though I respect and appreciate that all humans have a right to their opinion. I appreciate when a person is sharing " their opinion" to state it as such. You should not just state something as if it is proven facts because you do not know every single woman and every circumstance. Now, I will not explain much more because your statement gives insight about how you think and I believe that may not change and that's fine. However, I will end by saying that not because a woman is a single mother means she is irresponsible or a bad judge of character, as life is not cut and dry or black and white. Lastly, if you know anything about psychology then your speech would exhibit insight about how circumstances affect and influence decision making.

I too am a single mother to a 7-year-old boy, me and his father had broken things off abruptly when he was born...all those years I never stopped loving him, and I never told my kid a single bad word about his dad even when he wasn't in contact with us all those years.
~ a few months back due to my son being bullied at school about not having a father, I decided to contact him and get them back together, no matter what.
✨ they met, and it's a slow process of integrating him into our lives. My son is thrilled!
~ more than that- as for myself, I could never imagine that we would be back, together with the man I love, although he is and always was the love of my life, I thought so much time has past and so much pain hurt and anger where in between us, that I simply could not even get myself to think I might love once again, let alone with him!!
After having them reconnected, the sparks flew, and we slowly get to know each other, falling in love all over again, just this time as a family👨👩👦.... This video is godsend, loved EVERY SECOND OF IT, the alcoholism hints and underlined issues, yet SO MUCH LOVE, so little words and so much in them...

From what we can extrapolate (spoiler)
The man isn't wealthy, far from it. Oh, he bring them into a nice restaurant and brings chocolate to the kid, but he doesn't have the money to drive a car and used to have a motorbike. He talks how in London, you can be whatever you want, but its all empty talk. The usual talk of the "loser and dreamer" that can't hold a steady job. And seeing all the reaction from the mother, the man has or used to have a big problem with alcohol. And for the marriage proposal, well good luck for all three of them.
You smart smart lol
He returned her ring they where married but she left him before the kid was born....

It’s not always a fairy-tale. No matter how much love there is or how much you would like the father of your child to be in his life, if there was abuse once, there will be again, for lack of character is not so easy to overcome. Wishful thinking for love, rainbows and a complete family is one thing...before the reality sets in. Sometimes, just sometimes, not having a father in your life (as hard and heartbreaking and difficult as it is for both, son and the mother), is still better than having a bad one in your life. Agree?
I didn't even know this was new because I already know there are hundreds I haven't watched and I assumed this was one of them 😂

New film for you. @t
I felt it was too long for the message it was presenting. The child actor was very engaging ... that was about it!
Almost all of them are like that. The formula seems to be: 1-Great acting and cinematography, etc., 2-Little to no plot, 3- Praise in the comments.
Sometimes there are really good ones that prove it is possible to make a good short film with beginning, middle, and end that has both conflict and climax. That is not the majority. That is not to say on the whole I don't like a lot of them. I just think most are lacking or trying to hard to be mysterious despite that fact that plenty of videos show you can do a full plot in 10 minutes.
I hate hate hate it, than kids get punched by there parents

The experience and the knowledge to deal with this kind of stuff and to see other peoples veiws aswell and what they might feel when something happening to em to be more empathetic and compassionate
@@uhbhhhh5867 I'm SO sorry that happened to you. I hope you're in a better place now. ❤️❤️
@D M most of the time parents that beat like that do so over trivial things, plus being angry is just fine, but when you sin in your anger that’s the problem
I’m sure there’s a reason Cathleen left, pregnant, and didn’t respond to letters for nine years. Equating Cathleen hitting Gordon to a mother’s love was so important in showing us the mentality of the times. The acting in this short was really great, and the actress’ body language when Bill ordered a drink, gave her the ring, suggested Gordon visit him in London, and offered to walk them home (to a safe haven) said so much without requiring any words. And that line about not liking dogs…
I’d like to give my compliments to the team that made this short. It was excellent storytelling.
3:08 damn I wish my mom apologizes me after an ass whuppin
😂 Ikr
When his mom caught him spitting the sugar into his cup😂😂
Mom realized it was in her hands to stop the bulling. Then the man was willing to take responsibility for both. Love was still there, it was up to her now to put the past in the past and give her son a bright future and accept her man for what he was. Sometimes it is difficult to make decisions, but she had to be more pan-determined for the three of them and society. The moral of the story is "your actions affect others, so be responsible for them!"
He was still drinking! This is why abuse continues because we let ignorant emotions come in and tell us, oh its okay, he's going to give us money and nice things. The drinking will be fine, until the midnight fights, the hitting, all starts.
And then blame everything on the man. We knew better before getting into that marriage and we chose death. Lie in your bed.
Who is supposed to help the man you love? Who is supposed to educate children? It takes a strong being to take responsibility for all aspects of life. People is good deep inside. They deserve to be helped. just saying!
Very moving film. The casting is great especially the boy: usually I hate watching kids play coz they are bad and it is embarrassing ... but this little actor is so natural and fresh, great talent! 👍🎥❤️👌!

I wonder how common are such educational measures in the West nowadays, because in Soviet Union and Russia (at least before the age of social networks) it was an absolutely ubiquitous practice, which many parents I believe regarded as their sacred duty lol.

I see a lot of happy endings lovers here. To me, it's bittersweet. Big smiles and a kiss on the mouth when they meet, polite, almost sad smiles and a kiss on the cheek when they part. They've done a lot of living in 9-10 years and are different people now with different priorities.
This short film has the potential of being a great miniseries!
I don't get it. From what I gathered... This was about a woman raising her boy and the man she meets up with after 9 years is the boy's father. She doesn't tell either of them, and the man is too oblivious to realize since it seems he is an alcoholic or at the very least was. The woman hesitated to read all his letters, which makes me think she left him 9 years prior most likely due to the alcohol problem or something -- not totally sure. I don't know, am I close? 🙃
I think that too
G h r d
They had a love affair 9 years ago...she got pregnant and ran away without telling him about the baby and did not write him. Then she tells him about the child and after considering he comes to meet them. He secretly proposes by handing her a ring in a handkerchief. So now she has a lot to think about.
Based on a true story, which makes it even more heart wrenching. Maybe it's only heart wrenching for those of us who yearn for some sense of fatherly love and approval way past the time you'd think one would yearn. But yearn I do. It truly follows you your whole life if you're not given what you need. Love your children so they don't become like me. A bit of a shell.
As soon he says something about the fight she starts acting all nice

Mistitled. She did not just meet him. He had been sending her unanswered letters "Nine years" worth of letters. The son and his need for a father was her motivation. We don't know if he is wealthy or if this was a splurge. A slight character reveal: he was late and he was drinking at lunch. She made a comment about the drink and he immediately (with what seemed restrained irritation) told her not to go there.
