So what is this cross all about? What does it even mean? Why should you care? Well, let's start at the very beginning... Back when God first created the universe (Genesis 1 and 2), the world was perfect and Adam and Eve (the first humans) lived side by side with God. Then Adam and Eve sinned (Genesis 3); they rebelled against the rules of God and ate the fruit God had told them not to eat because they were tempted by the devil. When they ate the fruit, they became aware of good and evil and became sinful and rebellious toward God, because when given the choice, humans will always choose to rebel against God and please themselves. That sinful, rebellious nature was passed on to all of humanity and there is nothing we can do to remove it. Don't believe me? Ok, so, have you lied? Have you disobeyed your parents? Have you thought mean things about someone? Have you thought about or done dirty things? Have you been obsessed with something or someone? Have you gossiped about someone? If you've done ANY of those, you've broken God's law and what happens when you break a law? There is a punishment. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” - Romans 3:23 “For the wages of sin is death” - Romans 6:23a
We all have sinned and we all deserve death. This is not because God is evil and cynical, but because WE are evil. “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” - 1 John 1:5 but God is good and perfect and holy and His holiness cannot tolerate our unholiness. Sin and rebellion cause a spiritual separation from God because God is holy and perfect and He cannot dwell with unholy and imperfect beings. But here is where the cross comes in. God still loves us, even though we hate Him, and so in order to make a way for us to be with Him forever and be free from sin, He sent His only son, Jesus, to the earth to live a sinless life and then die on a cross to pay for the punishment that we deserve. Jesus was fully God and fully human, which doesn't really make sense, but if we could understand God, then why would He be God? So, Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life, even though He was faced with the same temptations as us. He was blameless and deserved no punishment, but the people didn't believe that He was God and they wanted Him dead. He was brutally beaten, forced to carry the cross up to the place of His crucifixion, He was then nailed to the cross through His wrists and feet, and He suffered for many hours.
Right before He died, Jesus - God - who had never sinned, took every single sin that was ever committed or ever will be committed, including yours, upon Himself, as if He had been the one to commit them, and then God unleashed all of the punishment on Him that was meant for us. Then He died. Because of you. For you. Three days later, after He had been buried in a tomb, He came back to life, breaking the power of sin and death and after showing Himself to the apostles and other witnesses, He went up into heaven. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ provides a solution to our separation from God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God." - John 3:16-21
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 6:23 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 All you have to do to be saved is to believe in Jesus, who died and rose again to save you from your sinful, rebellious ways. If you truly believe that, then you should hate sin and desire to turn away from your sin! "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9 Ask for forgiveness and He will forgive you. It's that simple. But I will warn you that following Jesus is difficult. You have to give up your sin and put God first! Our purpose in this life is to glorify God, preach the gospel, and make disciples. Our purpose is not to get rich and have a good life. In fact, God promises that there will be hard times in our lives and that people will hate us for being christians. "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But [rejoice) as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.” - 1 Peter 4:12-13“...We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” - Acts 14:22b “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” - Psalm 34:19 And that is not the end of the story! Jesus is coming back again! The first time he came, He came in peace, to save us, but the second time He comes, He will bring swift judgement on those who don't believe. Believers will be brought up to heaven and then He will pour out His wrath on those who don't believe. I urge you to believe and be saved! God loves you, He died for you, and you don't have to do ANYTHING to make Him love you or accept you. He accepts you just the way you are, but you must believe and receive His free gift in order to be saved!“I am the way and the truth and the life.
