"la" means "her" as a direct object: "I see her" or, as in this case, "I hear her." "le" means, more specifically, "to her" or "for her" because it's an indirect object. In Spain, they often use "le" where they should use "lo" or "la", but generally "lo" and "la" are used where you don't need to put the words "to" or "for" in front of the pronoun.
