Turn up your volume and kick back to 45 minutes of waves crashing on the rocky shores of Lake Superior at Tettegouche State Park!
An April storm with 30-35 mph sustained NE winds with 70 mph gusts produced waves 15-20' on Lake Superior.
To feel the raw wave power it's something that you really need to experience in person. A true phenomenon that happens 2-3 times a year.

They're like thus all over the lake .just imagine the Fitzgerald out there getting hammered by these waves constant..frightening though .the great lakes are a wonder to behold, but very dangerous too ..rest in peace all you sailors who have lost their life's on the lakes. God bless You....peace .✝️

Unlike the ocean with waves, Lake Superior behaves like a bathtub with swells and waves that move in totally indiscriminate patterns. Violence.

@@ravenmcbike6849they’re technically seas. Classified as lakes only due to not being salt water but they’re absolutely seas. Don’t be fooled

I see some people comment that these waves aren't as crazy as they're described to be, but you have to realize that they aren't predictable, cyclical waves. They're random and moving in all directions. Like another commenter said, its like a giant bathtub, rather than an open ocean. Perfect analogy.
I've lived in MI all my life and used to camp in the UP every summer with my family. We went to Porcupine Mountains to camp and hike one summer in 1997 when i was 7 years old. At about 8AM, i woke up before everyone else at our campsite and could hear the distant sound of crashing waves from the shore. I decided to sneak away from the tent and go check it out.
The shore was littered with jagged boulders and everything was slippery. It was really windy and overcast that day. The waves were slamming into the rocks and sending spray everywhere. It was deafening. I got too close to the shore and a wave crashed into the rocks i was standing on and it swept me off my feet and into the lake. I began to panic and scramble to get back on the rocks, but kept losing my grip from all the slimy, algae-covered rocks at the water's edge. It was an immediate drop-off of at least 5 feet. When i went in, i completely submerged and couldn't touch the bottom.
Luckily, a man that was nearby on the beach saw me fall in and rushed over to pull me out before i drowned. The conditions weren't as bad as this video depicts, but the chop was still severe enough to throw me all over the place and nearly pulled me out into the lake with the surging currents. Terrifying ordeal. That man saved my life!
When i got back to my campsite freezing and soaking wet and told my parents what happened (never told them how much trouble i was in - only that i slipped and fell), they whipped my ass so hard for going out there alone, I wanted to be back in the water 😂 And they did it for good reason. Now i respect this lake, especially after it took my dad and brother from me 12 years later.
Be careful out there folks! Lake Superior can overpower even the strongest swimmers with ease.

The power of the Great Lakes is incredible

  • @Cmonthatisyournamehahaha

Those black spruce trees are hit by waves much taller than the trees and turn to upright icicles. It is observed that black spruce is the only tree that grows in stands right to the the treeline at the tundra that is much farther than Lake Superior. Even though there are forests that are diverse in tree species in the transition and boreal forests beside Lake Superior, black spruce stands are the only species that can tolerate the harsh, icy conditions at the Lake Superior shore.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
T'was the witch of November come stealin'
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin'
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
    Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
    And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
    In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early
