How to Turn a Pen from Deer Antler

- A friend gave me some deer antlers, and I made a pen using an Antique Gunmetal Slimline pen kit from Woodturningz.com. I'm not a hunter, but this is the rural Midwest, so hunters are all around and it's not hard to find antler.
We've had some bitter cold temperatures over the last few weeks, so I have not been out in my shop much. More pen turning videos are coming in the near future.
A friend of mine makes similar pen blanks from home made micarta, she took a brass wire brush, cut the head off and attached it to a strong piece of wire. That wire is attached to her drill press table and when she drills that gummy micarta she pulls the brush up to the bit, with a longer bit you can place the brush right at the top of the workpiece and it will automatically clean the bit for you as you pull it out, the vacuum will suck up the bits and you can keep going. Shaving seconds off per piece can save a lot of time when you make hundreds of pens per week.
I am in awe of your talent.
Looks awesome!
Great job and thanks for posting this! Do you like the turning tools from harbor freight? Are they working well?
Beautiful
Beautiful work ! 👍
As beautiful as this pen turned out (no pun intended) it does seem a shame to lose all of the natural bark in the antler pieces through the turn process. If you selected thinner pieces of stock to start with is it still possible to be able to drill the blanks without them breaking, and perhaps end up with at least a few patches of stag?
Awesome bud ,do you sale your pen's?.
What pen kit did you use, or recommend?
What chisel did you use for this pen
Drill press works great as a pen press. Just not when spinning.
You are great. More grease to your elbow.
It would be good to do without the annoying music.
You need a pen press
Lose the music..your skill and machinery is enough...
