Who Were The Oligarchs Who Plundered Russia?

  • In the 1990s a handful of men benefited from the chaos and corruption of the fall of the Soviet Union by acquiring massive amounts of wealth and formerly state owned resources. These were the Russian oligarchs.
    In 1996 oligarch Boris Berezovsky identified the Semibankirschina or 7 bankers who were effectively running Russia by that time. This video explains who they were, how they acquired so much power and what was ultimately the undoing of their kleptocratic rule of Russia.

      @sadsackkvisling9694 Před 3 lety +7

      Right? There's the "pravda" of these events and changes, and the "iztina". At the core is the apparent desperation of the system already in conflict with itself. The new idea, behind the new faces and the new policies, went further than what had been Lenin's "tactical liberalization" of the NEP. If the new faces had been honest, they would have called their boldest moves "Post-Soviet National Neoliberalism"... but honesty was never a fundamental value of the Soviet system, especially in the period discussed where there were big changes in the internal composition of WHO actually had the key positions in the functioning parts of the state. All the ideoligical language about commitment to socialism became openly hollow and residual, a pose. I suppose we could consider this shift in the Oligarchial 90s as "Officially National" in scope and pretension perhaps, but not nationalist in the most essential sense. Better than nothing it could conceivably be argued, but never a open call for the unification and conscious self-rule of White native Russian Slavs in a very effective or direct sense. Neoliberal? In PRACTICE, absolutely. WHO cashed in on the systems elements of self-indulged instability, the big money that travelled, and TO WHOM, the effect of recapitalization and financialization within the rapidly mutating economy... this was, we should remember, occurring in a different way with the American system as well... it all obviously points to the presence and resurgence of JEWRY, but also the spread of the post-war myth of global capitalism as guarantee of national affluence and strength. Now that the Cold War was losing steam from a shared internationalism detached from any older style sense of ideological MISSION, capitalist and "evolving socialist" countries could claim to both pursue traditional liberal goals without much contradiction, despite the reality behind this mythic prosperity being a rather hollow claim.
      Revisionist Marxist critics looked beyond the superficial statistical level of money changing hands quickly, and they correctly noticed despite this frenzied intra-market activity little was getting produced to meet human needs of consumers. Despite the big profits and social mobility, there was no "miracle" of capital benefiting the Russian PEOPLE the way the German or Scandinavian mixed systems were claimed to have benefited the national communities of those states. The value of real "living wages" went down for Russia, fuel prices and effects of engineered scarcity or monopolization hit the "liberated" Russian consumer where the managed austerity of the post-WWII era or familiar element of state oversight had formerly given an image or sense of security to the common Soviet citizen. Not much exaggeration is needed in describing the negatives that the new conditions meant for him. The proof showed itself in the explosion of malnutrition, actual deaths of hunger, neglect of the orphaned or aged, prostitution, drug addiction and alcoholism, alienation and sense of abandonment, despair in the ability of the government OR markets to fix the everyday problems which were showing just how insufficient the IRL benefits of what followed "reform" really were.
      Keith tackles this part of contemporary history in a fair way that aims to let the structure be judged by its architects and the experimentation by its results.

    Good job, Keith. In the future it would be good to dig into how the :"Harvard Boys" also were instrumental in the writing of the Russian Federation's constitution and in doing so set up so many protections for the oligarchs---and themselves.
    Also the notion that the CIA was "taken by total surprise" that the Soviet economy was imploding when in actuality the agency had been instrumental in its undermining AND responsible with Saudi Arabia for the Chechen and other Muslim republics' turmoil and guerilla/urban terrorism of the 90s and early years of Putin's tenure.

    To be fair no one had enough money to buy the companies of a huge fallen empire at the price that it was worth when just a few years ago everyone pretty much got the same tiny wage, and the ones who didn't usually got their luxuries as services from the government they were in favor and/or control of, not in capital. The problem was the system, shock therapy, that let these people get all this power, which they themselves probably made sure was enacted.
