  • Today, I'll give you an update on my Ring Alarm PRO after the 1 month trial of the Ring Protect PRO subscription and 2 months of using it. I also added the Ring Power Pack for backup power during outages and realized that you will need this more than you think and I'll tell you why in the video. We will do a quick unboxing, check out the features of the power pack and test the battery life. I also tested the speed of Ring's backup internet and see if it is good enough.

      @jaturnley Před 2 lety +1

      Yep. It's always a really good idea to segregate all of your IoT devices from your personal computing devices - appliances like cameras, lighting controllers, and the like are more likely to have security vulns that can compromise your network, so keeping them away from where your personal data is kept is best practice.
      High-end routers usually have the ability to run more than one WiFi network that you can use (in which case you just set up that separate subnet so it can only reach the internet and use the remote access features of your devices or a VPN to manage them), or you can run them on a separate router that runs underneath your main one and tunnel the appropriate ports out.

    Good review. I'd keep most of the echo and ring cameras connected to the ring pro and everyone else stay connected to your home network. My main NVR is connected to a lifepo4 battery pack so everything has a 24hr power.

    I love all your informative videos! Thank you! Here are some pretty technical questions / testing requests for you. Would you be willing to try setting up the Ring Alarm Pro as an extender on an existing Eero Pro 6E network? I want to try to retain my current Eero 6E base station for the faster speeds. Supposedly, this is a new ability to set up the Ring Alarm Pro as an extender. If set up this way, would you still be able to get the included (w/ Pro monitoring subscription) Eero Plus on the existing 6E base station? Would the Ring Edge still work? Would the Ring Alarm Pro still be able to provide backup cellular internet to the main network during a power outage assuming the other Eeros are also on power backup through a UPS? If the other Eero routers lose power, would the Ring Alarm Pro be able to become the primary base station and provide connectivity with cellular? Sorry for the many questions and request, but thought it might be helpful content for future videos. Thank you!

    Great video. funny you mention the eero issue.. bc i was finding conflicting info (from rings site)... I actually got my ring alarm pro today and I already had 3 eeros so I put my ring after my main eero, that was already wired to my modem then wired ring to that eero.. but now I'm thinking if the power goes out will it still work on backup if it's second in line? And that pop up that you get that makes you do either a new network etc for some reason mine went away and I was able to just connect the ring alarm as an additional eero router to my current setup and so far everything works fine. Just curious about that backup now that I watched your video and think about it more maybe I need to redo my entire network which I didn't want to do and put the ring brain first. having to connect nest thermostat and vacuum robot to a new network is a nightmare! Either way thanks for all your info. I think I may reach out to eero and ask bc ring said either way "should" work when i called.

  • @jaturnley
    @jaturnley Před 2 lety +3

    Any decent router will automatically shift channels when there is another strong signal nearby so there should be no conflict with signal strength inside your house. If you live in an urban area with lots of different people with their own wifi networks, however, you probably already know about channel congestion issues from having too many networks, so deciding to run another one for no reason other than you feel like it is probably not advisable if you are already facing that issue.

    • @johnszatkowski6898
      @johnszatkowski6898 Před 2 lety

      This is true but, conflicts can still occur. I used a WiFi "sniffer" and changed channels on my existing router to NOT interfere with the Ring Eero router and have no issues using both routers at the same time.

Would the wired backhaul eero 6 pro satellites not be able to provide fast internet? I was thinking mode-->alarm pro-->gig switch-->4 satellite eero pro 6 devices. Since I am using wired backhaul, why would I need a triband pro 6 at the alarm pro? As both 6 pro and 6 support 802.11ax, wouldn't 6 pro only add faster wireless backhaul which is irrelevant in my configuration?

    How do you specify the subset of devices on the eero network that get 4G/LTE backup? 3GB of backup is tiny if people use any sort of media streaming in the house so it would make sense to only provide cellular backup to a subset of mission critical devices such as the hubitat hub, ring cameras, and other mission critical wifi sensors around the house like my netatmo devices. Supposedly you can specify this on a per device basis in the eero app but I have been unable to find a video online of how this works. Ring webpage has this amorphous statement: "Select which devices to keep connected. You can select which devices you want to keep connected to Backup Internet from the Ring and eero apps by toggling LTE on/off. Please note, your devices must be charged or have an external power source to connect to Backup Internet. Backup Internet uses cellular connectivity and is subject to availability and coverage in your area." I have a whole homr backup generator so all devices in house remained powered during a power outage and it takes only 10 secs fro the genset to spin up and the included backup battery of the alarm pro should be able to bridge me, correct?

    I'd suggest a comparison video with a similarly priced UPS (battery backup), because it really seems like you're an Amazon salesman now. A lot of options at or below $129 that could potentially power the modem AND the Alarm Pro base station, which would likely be better for most I would imagine. Good note on the cellular not switching back though - I'd also bet that Ring/Eero/Amazon won't be fast to fix a problem that forces customers to accidentally pay them more money for accidental cellular usage. Curious if triggering a reboot from the app would get it to switch back?

    This is really disappointing. Actually for many who have already setup a complex home mesh system, this gen of ring pro is not helpful at all. Also if ring keeps selling buggy hardware or obsolete-spec hardware, they'll not justify the lack of z-wave integrations, the $200 annual price and those expensive cameras. This is strange! Just last week my ISP was doing maintenance and my ISP went down several times for 10-15min at a time and not only did I get notifications that my ISP failed I also got notifications when my ISP was restored with my Ring Pro and no reset was needed as I was not at home at the time. However, I did have to reset the Pro when I first set it up as it was STUCK in backup cellular (I had to call tech support). Now as to the other issue you did not test - I am still running my existing WiFi6 router as it has a VPN running on it 24/7 and I have no issues with the two. NOTE: The Ring Pro needs to be hooked up to your modem and then your existing router off the extra CAT plug on the Ring Pro. In the Eero app you can control what exactly will use the backup cellular which is nice. BUT, because this is not a Eero Pro router MANY devices will NOT connect on the 5G band on the Eero which SUCKS and devices will SUFFER on the 2.4Mhz band! This is why I still use my existing router with the VPN running on it as ALL my devices are encrypted and harder to crack that are connected to it! ANY Eero router is unable to install a VPN directly on it which is a MAJOR flaw for me! Other than the Eero shortcomings I still like the Ring Pro setup because of the camera access via. cellular which is what I wanted for some time! For me doing online banking, purchases, and other transactions I prefer connecting through my existing router with the VPN as it adds an extra layer of encryption and security. Plus running a VPN you can switch content to other areas of the world for streaming and prevent your ISP and other services "tracking" your every move online! As you mentioned these two routers use completely different IP addresses and cannot communicate with each other. Also, DO NOT use the same password for each router as you are just asking for trouble if "hacked"!

    The gateway question is good. I was wondering the same thing. Because if you have an Eero 6 Pro as your Gateway, and instead you use the integrated Eero 6 from the Ring Pro, would limit your LAN to less speed than Eero 6 Pro? Doesn't make sense to call it Ring Pro, if the Eero 6 integrated is not the Pro. But well, only thing I could complain so far from Ring. Hahaha.

    • @johnszatkowski6898
      @johnszatkowski6898 Před 2 lety +2

      This is why I still use my existing router in tandem with the Eero. You MUST plug the Ring Pro directly to your modem then use the second CAT 5/6 connector on the Ring Pro hub to connect your existing router. I ONLY use the Ring devices on the the built-in Eero router and the rest of my devices are still using my existing router. I have NO issues or speed loss. NOTE: each router needs to have separate IP domain address call-outs to work correctly. I also changed the channels on my existing router to not cause interference between the two. The built-in Eero router is NOT a PRO on the Ring Pro hub and is really quite limited and MANY 5Ghz devices will only connect at 2.4Ghz speeds which is NO good for me at WiFi 6ax speeds. The Eero is quite "basic" in all aspects and does NOT allow channel or any other tweaking settings. Also, Eero or Eero Pro routers do NOT allow you to install a VPN on them which is yet another shortcoming if you are into EXTRA security and being able to change regions to STREAM content from other countries not available in the USA. I am NO networking expert and doing some simple reading online enabled me to do everything I currently do running (2) routers off of (1) cable modem.

      I am trying to fully understand how to properly set up my network. I currently use a TP Link AXE5300 Deco Mesh System. I have 6 total decos. 1 is used as my router and the other 5 are wireless and are backhauled with 6E. I am wanting to get the Ring Alarm Pro but I do not want to give up or replace my current mess system or router. I have invested a lot into it. I have both read articles, forums, and information from the ring website that states that I can indeed plug the Ring Alarm Pro base station into my current router. I do not want to use the Eero built in router in the base station at all. I just want to have the other benefits of the Pro Alarm Base station. I have called Ring and I spoke with 1 representative who stated I couldn't do that and another Ring representative stated I could if I sacrifice the SSD local memory and 24/7 backup internet. But on the Ring support website it shows a diagram and says I actually can. I have read and have been told multiple different things multiple different times. In your experience, is it as easy as plugging in the ring alarm pro base station into my current TP Link router then connecting my ring cameras and components to the base station? I want to keep my current TP Link router and mesh system internet set up. Thank you for any help!!

      @@TheHouseOfSplatter I totally understand you. I use Eero Pro's and would not give up those to use the Eero regular (less speeds). I currently have the older Ring Alarm, which gives me no issues. Now, in your case, if I was you, I would just plug the Ring Alarm Pro to your main TP router (gateway) and from there, 2 options:
      Option 1: connect all your Ring Cameras (if you are planning to get some) to the new/separate network created by the Ring Alarm Pro (because, regardless of using it or now, I believe you have to create the network as part of installation) and ONLY use that network for your cameras. This will help your bandwidth on your main wi-fi, I believe.
      Option 2: create the new eero network and just don't connect anything to it, and connect your Ring Cameras using your TP LInk network.
      In my case, the only way I am willing to use Ring Pro Base station as my main router, is if they placed an Eero Pro 6 built in, instead of the Regular Eero 6, which is limited in wireless speeds.
      I hope this helps. Let me know if/when you do it, so we can share knowledge.
