Simon Hutchinson Yes the J35 Draken looks better, there is one still in the Swedish Air Force for airshow use, wonder why they never fly it in England, they use it in Sweden from time to time. You can youtube search "Draken Johan 56" and you will see it, it's an J35J Draken with bigger fuel tanks. :)
i love all the swedish fighters - they look so revolutionary and ahead of their time in the sky....the sheer volume of those flygmotors in any application is terrifying in itself. Kudos to Sweden for retaining their historic types for future generations to witness. Kind of like the UK should do with the Lightning. Let one fly!
Probably one of the best at it´s time. They where built to hunt and destroy sovjet bombers. They could perform the COBRA long before russians even knew how to spell it....
The Draken, Draken (in Swedish is Dragon or Kite), you can name it both names in english i suppose, the shape kinda looks like a Kite, and the RM6 engine spit flames (like a dragon) when the AB turns on. I kinda like the swedish names on their Fighter jets, J29 Tunnan aka The Barrel, A32 Lansen - The Lance, J35 Draken - The Dragon / Kite, AJ 37 Viggen - Thunderbolt (Vigg = also a bird), JAS 39 Gripen - Griffin / Gryphon.
It looks almost "Alien" and unearthly, especially in the wing profile. I mean, freeze at 1.40. Wonder if it was responsible for a lot of the UFO hoaxes back in the 60s/70s. But fantastically beautiful of course.
One of the SAAB 35 Jetdragons missions in mean was to stop bombers wich could wear Nuclear cabality ! for this they certaine have capability to run very fast (mach 2.2 )

Justin Roberts we had 600 of these plane in swedich airforce....superstrong airforce for a country with 7 milion at that time

Amazing aircraft for a 1949 era design. Mach 2.2 and a lot safer to fly than the F-104 Starfighter of the period.
Highest climb ratios even today,the idea was fast launch,and get up there fast and intercept russian ICBM´s

Compare it to any other American, UK, French or Soviet fighters in 1955. There's really no comparison.

Top speed is do over 2.2. Mach 2.4 is not hard to retch some says but it still going faster. The problem is that it runs out of fuel.
