  • Tim Smolens analyzes the chord progression, modulations, and songwriting devices of this deceptively simple early Beach Boys surf song. Tim shows the viewer how to apply those techniques to their own original music bu isolating and committing to memory the songwriting devices at play.

You're a mad genius dechipering these complexites and then simply explaining them for us. what a time to be alive. .
When you say that "when the composer first changes key, the listener doesn't even detect the most basic chord progressions and the composer can take advantage of that"-- a lightbulb went off for me. I know this is the case but I've never heard it articulated in the exact context I needed to hear it.Thanks.. .fantastic stuff as always.

Definitely planning on that one. It is definitely in the top two of most advanced early songs with the other one going to warmth of the Sun

Tim I would love to see an analysis from you of "Our Sweet Love". Quite a mysterious chord progression from Brian.

Ironic that Brian's "Don't Back Down," was an ending to the surf-rock music that leads into the songs from Today! through the Holland album.

This song makes me think of that song "Downtown" by Petula Clark, I only heard it recently. I *think* it's in E major, and it also has a key change to F, and I think it uses a I, IV, V as well

Such an amazing songwriter! Some favs pre Pet Sounds were this one.
    Don't hurt My Little Sister
    Catch A Wave
    Car Crazy Cutie
Kiss me baby.. So many more
Can we also get some respect for Denis on Drums (He was underrated)

Never heard this song, but it's instantly likeable and catchy. I've said this in another video but you're like the Xth Beach Boy (I don't know how many of them there are, but whatever that is you'd be the one above that haha).
I'm also picking up a tonne of chord and song writing stuff here that I have no idea why I've never learned it elsewhere :|

You know what else is really interesting/crazy here...
I hear a lot of Nirvana here. Maybe Kurt was conciously or subconsciously influenced by Brian Wilson? I doubt Kurt ever studied composition too deeply, I think he probably just played around and happened over some stuff that sounded interesting.

You'd be safe calling it a #7-1 ostinato, but I digress...
