Excuse me while I fanboy about highlights for a sec...
The highlights are DEFINITELY the best part!! They make a character look so alive with a dot of your brush!!!
Another cool thing when done right is when you put no/limited highlights in eyes. That can really sell an emotion, especially a painful one.
I have a character who has no highlights in his eyes and it really makes the derpy-look I was going for tho so it depends on how you use it.
Lots of highlights can show awe or other positive emotions powerfully.
Although usually your character will have more subtle highlights, its definitely an underrated way for a character to express!
