Kawai K4 sounds

- This is a demo of some single patches from my Kawai K4, a digital synth/rompler manufactured in the late 80s (1989). Most are "sysex" from internet and a few of them programmed by myself.
Sorry for my horrible playing, I´m not keyboardist. This is all improvisation and some "riffs" that I practice sometimes.
I love this synth and its warm, dulcet, lo-fi, rough and dark sounding. You can get wonderful and amazing sounds from it, specially pads, strings, choirs, leads, weeeps, vintage and "analog" synth sounds. Even you can get some "FMish" sounds from it. It is a very versatile synth.
No external effects used, just the pure synth sounding and internal effects, from the K4 stereo outputs through a Behringer UMC-204 interface.
Thanks for watching/listening.
EDITED (30/09/2018):
I only have programmed a few sounds, 95% are from sysex files I´ve found on the net, I only have selected my fave ones, so It would not be ethic to sell them.
I share them all for free download...

Enjoy with your K4s ; )
I don't remember my K4r to sound that good. The FX of the K4 does a great job.
Yep, my rack same as Kawai dropped the FX engine in the K4r vs. the K4 'board. I just use FXs on outboard or desk, to make it sound lush. Love this classic digital gritty beast! 😎👍🎹🎵🍻
I kinda think this is my favorite “all digital synthesizer…”
Like, I legit think I’m falling in love with it’s sound…
I fell in love with it the first time I listened to.
Thanks for comment.
I used to have one once, still nostalgic feelings when I see and hear how it looks and sounds. In comparison to DX series from the 80-ies, as well as to SY22 or 55, I find it more versatile or at least competing. I still remember its very pleasant keybed with aftertouch and dynamic velocity switch function, pleasant and warm pad sounds and programmability too. I still own Yamaha SY77 from '89, and K4 seems very usable besides its gorgeus sound architecture, partly advanced meanwhile.
Yes, it´s an amazing and versatile late 80s synth. I even prefer it over any digital modern synth.
SY-77 is another amazing synth that I would not mind to have.
Thanks for your comment!
Not the best looking synth, but it's what's inside that counts, and this is so beautiful. I've just bought one, and can't understand why this synth wasn't more popular and so underrated. For the current secondhand market price, they are practically giving them away. I much prefer this than a DX7. Kawai has made some great synths. My first synth was a Kawai 100p. Wish they still made synths. Thank you for sharing. Brilliant.
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment.
Yes, this is a VERY forgotten and devalued synth that you can get for less than 200€ in very good condition. IMO, it has nothing to envy to another more popular and expensive "similar" synths like the M1 or D-50.
Odel 1980 Thank you for your reply. If you can get one, of course, don't think that many were produced. Although I like and own a D50, I must say, this is more exciting and more unique in sounds. The D50 has been played to death, like the DX7 and, M1. I'm not keen on both of them. But the K4, outshines them all. I wonder if anyone famous has used one. My advice, if anyone manages to find one in good condition and working order, buy, while they are still cheap. I have a feeling they will be a good investment in the future, All my older synths have shot up in value, I'm shocked by just how much. Keep on making great videos. Love the 80's too a big fan. Take good care. best wishes. moog.
@@moogdome2562 Thank you so much for your comments. Well, I think that *The Chemical Brothers* used this synth in some of their songs.
It's a real pleasure.
@@moogdome2562 Got one in mint condition, looks like straight out of the factory and agree with you that this is more unique, its not quite as polished as the D50 or M1 but thats what I think makes it sound more interesting to my ears in modern times as newer keyboards don't have any real character. I like that 80s and early 90s era which this is great for, perfect for synthwave.....that will push the price up!!
Its a bit silly the way prices have been going up, I like to be able to buy and sell things and its not worth spending a lot on old kit that could break at any time.
i love the character of it. thanks for sharing!
hopefully I'll get the synth one day
I actually got one, with dodgy interface. SO I looked MADINGLY for sysex files and such, to have more presets. Couldnt find a lot. This is a BIG help mate.
Nice video, very nice sounds, and I like you Terminator version
Love Will Tear Us Apart also very nice!
Just ordered one. I cant wait for it to come!
I think you will not regret ; )
Ich hatte auch eine Kawai K4 und werde mich einen gebrauchen wohl wieder kaufen klasse👍
Thanks for these beautiful patches ! How many patches can you save on the K4 (without the RAM card) ?
Awesome
cool!!
yes try to play him with a section of bass from cz 5000 or cz 1...like me and you become a fantastic wave harmonie...just put cellio or nappe from a jp8 or juno60 and for finish a blue sky reverb and ........BOUMMMMMMM
the effects saved this thing from being a complete failure, using some of the thinnest, compressed, sample snippets of the time....the Korg M1 shot loads all over it.
This is more lofi which is its charm for me, far more synthwave and retro.
you can achieve "lo-fi" with bit crushing... try going hi-fi from lo-fi, its like reducing a photo from 4000x4000 pixels to 4x4 pixels and back to 4000x4000 with the same detail.
@@layzer80 Not the same, there is a magic to these quirky waveforms. The M1 is great but doesn't have the same sound as the sounds are too famous.
brilliant themes
I´m an awful keyboard player, but with just a few right notes, this wonderful synth "sings".
Thanks for comment!
@@KurtFuller I have one (and refurbishing a 2nd) of these myself, I agree it has a special sound, I liked the themes very much, good carpenter/howarth vibes
also thanks for those patches, i've loaded them into the one I fixed, gorgeous stuff
@@lerosa3656 You´re welcome. I hope you enjoy with them 😉

Would you share some of the patches? I' planning on getting K4 and the sounds you presented here are serious incentive in the case.
Of course, read the video description ; )
Can anyone please tell me how to restore original factory sound patches, without losing everything?..
Sorry, but I'm afraid if you restore the original factory sound patches you will lose the sounds you have in the K4's memory.
Thank you so much. I appreciate your reply. Think your videos are the best.
I want this synth.
Uncle Squiddz - You can get It very cheap actually
I Love 80s I know, but I don't have any cash right now. I'm an unemployed teen.
Uncle Squiddz - Well, you don´t need to save many money to get one. It use to be for sale for 150-200 € in good conditions.
Just be careful if you are looking to buy one. I used to have one and really liked it, but sold it off. Years later I bought a rack version as I missed having it, and the lovely sound I remember wasn't there. As it turns out, some of the early models have a very noisy and lower voltage output. So, they all don't sound as lovely as this demo.
@@Rocinante01 i know i'm a bit late but i think the reason the "sound wasn't there" is because the rack module didn't have any internal effects like the keyboard did
i have 4 pieces at home..........great and fantastic.....put a bluesky reverb behond...and you can forgeting any jp8 or sequential prophet...and that just for 200 euro...hahahaha
erik cuvellier - Yes, for the price you can find it, It's an amazing machine. I prefer It over many other digital and even many VA and analog synths. I have owned some other synths, but the only one I will never sale is the K4. I think It's my favourite digital synth beside Casio CZs.
willing to sell one?
erik cuvellier willing to sell one?
Second skin at 20:00?
erikopnemer - Yes.
"The Chameleons" is one of my favourite bands. After recorded it, I noticed that I played it one octave upper :(
