- The 493rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, belonging to the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, executes safe and standard intercepts while participating in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. Intercepts are a regular occurrence, and U.S. Air Force pilots routinely conduct them in a safe and professional manner. The U.S. Air Force will complete its fifth rotation as the lead nation for Baltic Air Policing on Jan. 8, 2018.
U.S. Air Force F-15s from RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, intercept two Russian Navy SU-30 Flankers in international airspace near the Baltics, Nov. 23, 2017. The intercept was initiated because the Russian aircraft did not broadcast the appropriate codes required by air traffic control and had no flight plan on file.

In the years 1982-83 before I met my USAF Crew Chief husband, he was assigned to the 57th FIS Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Keflavik NAS Iceland, when the FIS SCRAMBLED, the TU-134 Bears were coming out of Murmansk, on their way to Cuba, via the GIUK Gap. Scramble was as real as support AWACS and KC-135, and the F-4Es 66’ models using AIM-7s and AIM-9s. The alert hangers were at the end of the world, everything had to be trucked in, fuel, food. If you were a Black Knight, you understood the word “WE HAVE TRACKS IN THE SYSTEM!”
When I was deployed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 we would intercept Russian aircraft all the time. I spent a lot of time on the flight deck and I would see Russian Bear patrol bomber fly by at about 5000 feet and about a mile away. And there would *always* be an F-14 Tomcat with white ones on the rails above and behind them. All hours of the day, all days of the week. Most of the time we would have a few birds in the air already, but once in a while we would have to launch the Alert 5 and then the Alert 15's later because there would be two Bears about 100 miles apart. Just normal day to day business!

Many countries, choose to scramble two jetfighter to identified and intercept the unknown aircraft. The air force need to follows their order, maybe some countries choose to scramble only one subsonics jetfighter to idendified 3 supersonics intruder, hollywood do believe me 🙂

is it normal for the intercepting fighters to get in formation in front of the bandits? I assume the goal is to ensure control of the situation by placing yourself in an advantageous position.
Being that close to a Sukhoi it doesn't really matter where you are. In a dog fight those Sukhoi are beasts. They can do a Cobra and end up behind you anyway. Smart move is to engage at a safe distance. Sukhois are built for close combat and defy phisics if flown by the right pilots.

American interception procedure is to always not be next to the aircraft for safety purposes.
Beautiful aircraft, but absolutely NO ONE, pilot, fleet, squadron or country, has any business flying in international space and NOT following all the rules of flight for that area! That's just asking for trouble. Some over-eager guy behind a SAM could get itchy fingers but every flier has the right to defend themselves if necessary, to prevent loss of a lot of lives. An errant pilot will usually get an intercept and warning, but that may not always be the case, because humans are wont to err sometimes and the result can be deadly.
The F-15 Eagle is antique compared to Su-30.
So, why old F15 Eagle is better than modern Su30?
