    i went with the 890 R rather than the Superduke. I thought about it for a while and there really is no getting around the fact that i dont need that much bike. I dont race, so it would never see a track. It would only be good for getting me tickets or jail time, or laid up in a hospital. And i dont think it would be fun never being able to get out of like 2nd gear.

    Hey Chris. Great video. I bought a 1290 3.0 last October. Took me until this past weekend (and 5000klms since new) to fully get used to it, and I class myself as an OK rider (not great, not quick, just competent) who loves to have fun on a bike.
    The 1290R is ridiculously fast, and incredibly unforgiving if you are stupid or worse, unprepared. I am also a big-ish bloke at 185cm and 120Kilos, so having such a lump of a bike sort of makes sense too. I sat on the 890R when I had my 1st service and in all honesty, it felt a bit small for me... but if I can convince my Missus to part with her precious Ducati Monster and get one, I'll truly have the best of both worlds. :)
    The other thing - the 1290 is tall and a bit unwieldly at walking pace/moving it around the garage! My wife refuses to ride it because she can't reach the ground with both feet, so that could be an issue for some.

    Fucking excellent comparison and having ridden both and being an owner of the 1290 I have to say I couldn't agree more. I couldn't get past the 890 having the archaic KTM switchgear & TFT, especially given the updated format of the gen 3.0 1290, also the 890 just feels somewhat cheap to the touch in certain areas, plastics a bit flimsy and the headlight being decidedly budget compared to the masterpiece adorning the 1290's face. Guaranteed this was all intentionally done though because if you gave the 890 the same quality TFT / switchgear / bikini fairings & headlight you can be sure the 1290 would lose sales to the 890. My decision was made by the absolute engineering marvel that is the LC8 in its current state of evolution - it never, and I mean never disappoints, it really is something special to behold, such brutal performance and the v 3.0 1290 Super Duke R really forces you to recalibrate your throttle grip because 1% increments really equate to so much and in all honesty after best part of a year nearly of ownership I can honestly say the beast 3.0 still makes me giggle like a schoolgirl and my cheeks ache from grinning every single time I'm out riding. I don't think I've ever loved a bike so much, in fact I definitely haven't (not including MX bikes), it really is the king of the road and if you know what you're doing you can easily embarrass plenty of litre bikes at the track.
    I'm a KTM fanatic by the way, so any more KTM comparisons would be greatly appreciated, enduro to MX, their entire range, KTM make some of the best bikes in the business, across all genres. Keep up the good work lads 🤙

    This comparison is dripping w/ quality info and experience. The more bikes I have owned and the more experience I get, the more I wish I had listened to this sort of stuff and believed it, from the beginning. Of course, it's tough to know who to trust, so I'm always skeptical. But for sure, Chris has this stuff nailed. That's the TLDR; but some specifics below if you care:
    I've ridden or owned stuff from MT-07, Ducati 999, CBR-1000R, etc. Currently I own an R6, an MT-09 and a GSXR-1000R. My favorite road bike, by far, is the MT-09. From the factory, it has crap suspension, so I had to upgrade that. That's a bit what I see this 890 as. Great torque, great chassis (once you fix the garbage suspension on the MT), easy to ride, but not scary fast. All the fun is in the first 3-4 gears, and below 110mph.
    The R6 is my second favorite on the road. Lightweight, great chassis, nowhere near enough power to be scary. But on the road it's not ideal because the engine is completely gutless at the bottom / mid range, so you have to ride the hell out of it. Although I prefer the supersport riding position, it's just not comfortable, and it struggles on really tight stuff or substandard surfaces. The MT can be is easy in these scenarios.
    My least favorite on the road is the Gixxer. Sure, the 1000R has top tier front forks, so it's really stable, but it's just such a monster that you have to really work hard to keep it under control. Or you just don't push it hard on the street (probably smart), but that's not fun. And Chris mentioned almost off-handedly the way the big engines chew up rear tires, but it's not a joke. I can flog the R6 and still get twice the mileage at least on a rear tire than I do on the Gixxer.
    Regarding other bikes I've ridden and owned, it basically comes down to this: The lower powered stuff like the MT-07 is fun if you have access to good twisty roads. You don't really need to worry about giving too much gas as long as you're not doing something completely stupid. The high powered stuff, is just too limited and hard to deal with on the road. And dangerous, frankly. The Gixxer or CBR or other liter bikes I've been on, have long gearing, and are so capable, you don't even feel like the bike is doing anything until you're going 100+ MPH.
    The middleweight stuff, IMO, is the most fun on the road. That 890 looks amazing and I really want one. The liter hyper-nakeds also seem like great street bikes because of where they make their power, but they are better for hooning around and popping wheelies than they are in the corners on the street.

    I was contemplating getting the 890 last year. Ended up with a used 1290r gen1 special edition. The engine is just outrages fun! Having said that, she is a handfull in the twisties compared to middleweights like the 890, z900, mt-09. Coming out of third gear corners you get the front unintentionally up in the air. And if you turn the tc off you gave quit a few pant-browning moments...

    I liked your review. I live in Palm Beach County so I ride all year. I used to live in Georgia and it has some of the best roads in the USA up in the North GA Mountains. I swore I would never buy a top of the line sportbike in FLA because of our straight flat roads. They go from north to south, east to west at sea level. We live on top of a swamp and it is based on a canal system. My Harley is tough to ride in the summer even though it comes stock with an oil cooler. When the heat index hits around 110 degrees and I am going 85-90 on the interstate it gets hot and can shut off. Not fun. I only ride at night. The rest of the year it is fine. I needed a water-cooled bike. I got a fantastic deal on the 890 R . It had 1200 miles on it and was flashed and set up perfectly. It was on consignment. I also saved thousands on all those horrific dealership fees. Now I will have to do some trackdays. I always wanted to run my XR on the track too. My 12 year old son races supermoto and BMX so most of my time and money go to him. I do get some time during supermoto trackdays to run.

They all do their own "thing"--which is mainly be fun--the GT with a pillion onboard. If KTM can solve electronic glitches--many are harmless resets--and the pesky valve cover gasket leaking and drive gear o-ring leaking (How hard can it be?) they would rule the world. I would add the clutch slave but I heard they fixed that on the 2021 SMC R. Maybe they attended to the other things, too.

I had the 790 and have no issue riding a similar way on the 2020 1290 once I got used to power difference. I had a 1290 SDR then wanted something lighter and manageable but with power, so bought an MT09 and modded it with a turbo kit then had to mod it some more! It’s great fun. However also have a Tuono 1100 and that is my fave so far. The chassis, engine, suspension, brakes. Had an original 2003 V2 Tuono and loved that also for the same reasons.

    • @MikeVertx
      @MikeVertx Před 3 lety

      The MT 09 for the price gives a pretty good rush "bang for the buck" could literally buy 2 of them and accesories them how you want for the price of a 1290. (Granted mt 10 is the closer comparison). I do like the mt 09 quite a bit, wish they would get with the times on a color TFT but then again "pay attention to the road" not the screen lol.

    • @Jeez726
      @Jeez726 Před 3 lety

      The Best part of the MT09 is the engine. It’s really good in the mid weight category, perhaps the best.
      It’s let down by the rest, suspension, brakes etc. BUT it’s relatively cheap meaning you can mod it to suit. The chassis is good and agile. That engine with a turbo with its torque and lightweight is amazing. MT 10 with same mod would be 20 kilos heavier and torque higher up the rev range. It’s the ultimate semi urban blaster as I have it set up. That’s coming from an ex 1290 SDR and Tuono owner. As the roads stretch out the others make more sense over distance.

      @@Jeez726 I have a 2017 MT-09 and I always hear people complain about the suspension and brakes. 1) I had the tech at the dealership set my suspension for my weight and height. I can put this bike into a corner with the best of them. 2) Breaks upgrade - braided lines and performance brake pads. My bike will endo with the front break now...For about $300.00 these upgrades made my bike like night and day...

    Even though the 890 Duke is cool, sharp and sensible, I'd rather have the 1290 Super Duke. I currently ride a Yamaha MT07 and I'm addicted to torque, my MT07 is very close to perfect for me. I love the instant torque and just want a BIGGER and BADDER version of this bike. The 1290 Super Duke is my dream bike, it is excessive yes but it's all about those little bursts of fun from 0 to 100, or over taking an annoying cager in the most spectacular fashion without dropping a gear. I love twins, big braps and big torque. One day she'll be mine :)

I am not sure i will be enjoying the likes of 1290 r cause i will be sh*^ing my pants probably more than truly enjoying the ride, and i dont think that my skills nor my self control are helping either. So i think a middleweight is a better option (also price wise). Till now i tested the mt09, street triple and the new monster - as the mt09 was an older model tho i need to try that one out again and the 890 (pref the R version) - so far on paper i am between the MT09 sp and the ktm 890 r

    That 1290 really is a grinning good time to get on and GO ... it foes have its drawbacks as you pointed out
    And thsts exactly where the 890 steps up into play addressing the weaknesses of the 1290 ans turning those into strengths. Trade off is the 890 just doesnt have anything close to the same power or adrenaline on the straights or highway.
    Sigh, a bit torn as i think most are, heavily leaning towards the 1290 for day to day happiness and rush.
