Jack Lemmon’s Comedy Masked His Darkest Secret

  • Jack Lemmon was a jack of all trades. He could do it all: comedy-slapstick and romantic-and hard-hitting dramas. Then there were his eyes, which showed a vulnerability that made audiences want him to succeed-no matter what craziness he was up to. And speaking of craziness, there was a LOT of it.

I met him in 1976 at the Bing Crosby Open. I was with friends from the defense language school in Monterey, walking around and watching all the celebrities play golf. At the end of the day, I wanted to get an autograph from Jack Lemmon. Even though he had just played 18 holes of golf, he stayed for an hour afterward signing autographs for everyone who wanted one. This is after every other celebrity had left. Now that’s a classy guy. I could tell he was tired, yet he was so kind and down to earth. I never forgot that.

He was in a remake of 12 angry men from, I think, the mid 90s where he played the main guy (Fondas role in the og) and it wasn't bad. Not as good as the og but not bad. George C. Scott reprises the same role he played in the original. I think Tony Danza was in it too. But yes, Glenngarry Glen Ross was a fantastic movie.

Jack Lemmon is one of the greatest actors of all time. His adult behavior in a more sophisticated way mirrored how he acted as a child. He put on a happy face for his parents as an adult he was able to camouflage his drinking problem.

I think my favorite Jack Lemmon role was when he played Professor Fate in “The Great Race”. He was obviously playing the villain in that part so he was playing against his usual type. He didn’t have the lead role but I think he was more memorable than Tony Curtis. His portrayal was completely over the top at times and, at other times, he played it fairly low key but under outrageous circumstances.

one of my favourite jack Lemmon films is a 1960s comedy in full colour called " How To Murder Your Wife" His character is a very successful and wealthy NYC comic strip cartoonist, a bachelor and playboy type, his comic strip character is Brash Brannigan, clearly a reference to the James Bond strip that appeared in newspapers and Brash Brannigan is like that. Lemmon acts out scenes for his comic strip for real with some hired extras and his butler played by Terry Thomas follows them around taking photos of the scenarios they play out, and then he makes his comic strip drawings based on the photos. I just remember seeing this film as a kid and it actually got me obsessed with drawing my own comic strips and I ended up going to art school and following that career!! Anyway , the film is great and extremely entertaining, possibly one that doesn't get mentioned so much when talking about Jack Lemmon's films, but I'd recommend it, Terry Thomas almost steals the show as his very English butler/valet, I have it on a DVD, I never tire of watching it.

Jack Lemmon was one of my favorite actors, I have a nice story about Jack I use to work at Paramount studio, Jack was doing “Dad” and I saw him walking to his trailer I said h, introduced myself and told him I was a fan of his work and how nice it was to meet him, then I asked him if it was possible to get an autographed photo of him, he thanked me and said yes.. just give me a minute and went in his trailer came out with “I thought I had a photo for you, but it appears I ran out, I tell you what if your here tomorrow come to my trailer and I’ll have one for you”
I came the next day and the man had an 8x10 personally singed in an envelope waiting to give me…class act and I still have it 🙏🏾 🎭

I grew up in the '50s and '60s, black & white TV & Movies, old -school Hollywood and its trends/traditions, etc. While I confess to have seen Jack in only comedies I can't deny the impression he's made on me as a versatile actor/artist. WIMI IMO he was never miscast and he deserved every accolade he ever garnered. Disclaimer: I know what I like. 🙂

I loved jack Lemmon. That smile his expressive face and his comedic talent, what a great star. He played with so many of the greats of that era, but he with the equally wonderful Walter Matthau were a dream team made in heaven. Delighted to see that he was good friends with James Cagney also. Legends all thanks Jack for all the laughs and the odd tear you gave us.

This was a great short bio on Jack Lemmon. He has always been one of my favorites. Though like so many highly successful actors, the poor man had a sad childhood. I have no doubt that it contributed to his alcoholism. But managed to only have two marriages in his lifetime. He died way too young. Jack Lemmon will always be remembered as a very talented, versatile actor on stage and screen.

Great episode, very insightful. Lemmon did extremely well despite having to deal with what looks like a problem with alcoholism. It must have terrified him, knowing what his mother went through and that he had the same affliction. Just goes to show that even people with great comedic talent can struggle with their own inner demons, like Robin Williams. RIP, Jack.

LOVED this retrospective. I have a little Jack Lemmon story of my own. When I turned 18, my dad took me to the Gingerman, a restaurant in Beverly Hills owned by Carroll O’Connor - Jack Lemmon was there. My dad had secretly asked the staff to sing happy birthday to me and when they did, Jack Lemmon did too. I’ve told that story a LOT as you can imagine. It was such a great evening. I’m proud to say that I’m two degrees away from Charlie Chaplin as Jack presented Charlie with an Academy Award for lifetime achievement.
