They saw a 6'3" dude without a great shot and without great handles and thought he would be dead weight on the offensive end. The NBA is pretty close-minded about what works and what doesn't with little experimentation. GP2 still doesn't get enough credit for his offensive efficiency being right up there with 7 footers who do nothing but dunk the ball.
GP2 picks the dribble off the point guard when it is on the return to his hand. That's the time that the handler has no control on the ball's trajectory (unless its CP3, Steph, or Trey). If the handler is not in position to protect the ball once it bounces off the court... GP2 is going to tap it out! Incredible defensive intelligence.
