The term “repent” certainly appears, many times, and is very important as Jesus Himself says in Luke 13:5 “I tell ya nay, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish”, and says it twice, so definitely important.. The Scripture you provided, Acts 3:19 states “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins maybe blotted out”- repent is the action we take, the result of this action is we are converted and we receive the blotting out of our sins as a gift for repenting.. The question is- what is the Biblical meaning of “repent”? I’d imagine you’ve been taught “to turn away from all your sins” or “to stop sinning”- that’s what I was taught as well, until I actually researched it myself. In The Old Testament, God repents over 20 times. In Jeremiah 15:6 God says He’s repented so much that He’s weary of doing it! I can assure you 100% that God repenting has absolutely nothing to do with sin. The Biblical meaning of repent or repentance is to “turn and go in a different direction” or “to change your mind completely”. In the new believers case, to repent means to turn away from your false or empty hope and turn toward and believe in The Lord Jesus Christ, it actually has nothing to do with sin. When you repent toward The Lord- you will receive The Holy Spirit, right there in your sinful body, and The Spirit of The Lord will begin tearing down the sin in your life. Think about it, did you turn away from ALL your sins when you were saved? Have you turned away from all your sins even today? I’m sure the “big ones” you’ve turned from- drinking, drugs, porn, stealing etc- AMEN! Praise God! How about all the “little ones”? There’s millions of them, they all carry the same punishment as the big ones- eternal separation from God. Repenting of all your sins is something we strive for, but it will never be complete until the day we meet The Lord in Heaven
Don’t take my word for it- research it yourself! You’ll have to put away what man has taught you all your life and ask The Holy Spirit to guide your study, put on your spiritual eyes and dive into Scripture yourself, it’ll be a great blessing!
