- TV performance by Arcadia with ‘The Flame’ on Dutch popshow “Countdown”. Arcadia were a new wave group formed by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor of Duran Duran as a side project. Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.
Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.
Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.
Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.
Het Countdown archief is vrijwel helemaal compleet en sinds 2017 eigendom van het Amerikaanse Reelin’ In The Years Productions (David Peck - reelinintheyea...) en Double 2 Hilversum (Jan Douwe Kroeske - www.double2bv.nl). Het archief bestaat uit meer dan 3.000 analoge mastertapes die allemaal gedigitaliseerd en gearchiveerd zijn. I think of this album as the lost Duran album, so melodic but with a dark undercurrent. Shame that they never play this track live!

This is an interesting mix of the song.. it’s not the single mix, closer to the album version.. but there are definitely differences.

Probably a rough mix. They probably were there to promote Election Day and then taped this song too for future use. Maybe the final mix wasn't ready yet. Or they made an error and brought a rough mix instead of the final one.

Simon is lip synching. he even moves away from the mic on lots of occasions (2:25 completely facing away) and the mic never pics up his hand claps.. the biggest giveaway is occasions like 1:11 where he starts to sing the wrong line (he nearly sings the 'never give me any chance' line by accident) but the playback sings the correct line - and there'd be no reason to have a live guitarist hidden for a playback track, especially back then.. the guitar solo sounds exactly like on the final versions. it's the mix in general (things like the kick drum running through the end section (3:31) where they usually stop and start etc) that's different. @@duranasty

Hmmm, good question. Could be a customized TRS-80 Model 2, as the colorway is different, but probably a Fairlight. Yeah great tune….Nick Rhodes is a king either way! Big up Simon Le Bon, too!

this episode was aired October 1985. there's also a performance of Election Day and a short Interview from that day

Too bad he's lip syncing. The content and quality is amazing, though.
