    I would have to say that this video helped me a lot. Keeping the sensation that your body is leading (pulling) the bike was a perfect analogy for me. I really concentrated on being forward (over) the bike as I was accelerating up the face. The only time I would stay back is if I was decelerating up the face. I cleared my fist tabletop on Saturday and man...what a great feeling. I will say that if you are starting out and only going half way on the table top jump be sure you accelerate off the face...have your head over or in front of the bars and give it some throttle on the landing. When landing on any flat surface really work on accelerating just before landing. It keeps the bike from rebounding once you land and drives the energy forward instead of right back up into your feet and hands. The difference in feel is really incredible.

    proper way to learn a jump.
    pick a table top with mild take off angle.
    Ride it standing up knee bit bent a few times without jumping.
    Once you feel comfortable, and ready for the jump. Maintain a constant throttle which you are accelerating. Not the constant throttle that you are coasting.
    DO NOT close or abruptly squeez the throttle along the way. Maintain the throttle is the key.
    Start by a small yet accelerating throttle. slowly increase your take off speed once you are comfortable with it. Little by little. Don't get greedy, the track will bite back.
    If you are athletic, 3 days you can clear a simple table top.
    double take months or year to master. It is unforgiving. One mistake = broken bones.

    Yes you do... however it will feel like you are less forward because the bike comes up from underneath you a little bit, and so from the side (if someone looks at you), you will look more centered - but you as the rider, you maintain that position. Please start on super small jumps because it's really easy to endo practicing this. You have to feel it, and work your way up.

  • @TySchmidt
    @TySchmidt Před 10 lety +36

    In my opinion, you shouldn't need to lean before you hit a jump, what you need to do is work on controlling the wheels, if you ride up to a jump and let off the gas as your front wheel goes over, your back will slow down and you will land on the front wheel, if you drive up to a jump and after your front wheel is over you give it more gas, this will make your front end come up, do this until you get a feel for how much gas you need, this is how I learned, if I would keep it in 3rd gear and go about 30, then give it more gas as I was leaving the jump, I found u would land more smoothly than just leaning

    • @flackyoue7483
      @flackyoue7483 Před 9 lety +2

      "3rd gear and go about 30" idiot. Im sure you ride well, but your comment stunk when I got to this part. 3rd gear on what bike? what setup? what cc? What size fucking jump? c'mon dude. To anybody who read this horrible comment, hes right about the gas off the lip. keep a smooth acceleration. To learn a jump, try and pace a rider who doesn't do anything fancy in the air off the jump and just hits it naturally. Match your speed to them as you approach and you know that at very least you and your bike is going to clear to the landing. What happens in the air as you attempt it is up to you, and you alone. Be safe, have fun, and keep that bike un-scuffed.

    • @dreamstarusa
      @dreamstarusa Před 9 lety

      ***** actually my 3rd gear comment is good for ALL bikes. Why? because that's the gear that will be using the "neutral' part of the powerband of your engine. that's just a reference... don;t get too carried away. go about 1/4 throttle in 3rd gear whatever bike and it should be a pretty slow speed. thats' good.

      "3rd gear on what bike? What setup? What cc? What size fucking jump?"
      Fine, if all your concerned about is the exact specifics... this will only work on a 1992 cr125 that has bored out to exactly 134cc. You must be using hp2 oil mixed precisely at 36:1. The jump must be a table top 11 feet 3 inches across with the take off at 25 degrees, and the landing at 20 degrees. This will only work with Dunlop sand tires inflated 1 pound less than manufacturers recommendations. The red plastics kit works the best, but some people have even had success with a black plastics kit. Make sure your rear brake is worn down to about 30% so you dont accidently lock the tire after landing. Do not attempt this if you have an aftermarket clutch perch, it will not work unless it is oem. Spray paint your left footpeg blue and the right one green, then go out and buy yourself a renthal sprocket, they are lightweight and wont throw your balance off in air. And finally, keep the bike at bike at EXACTLY 2789 RPMs at takeoff. There, is that specific enough for you?

    I appreciate the video. All this stuff happens at speed. Getting comfortable and starting small is key. If you think too much, that's a problem. My opinion is that the head position is key, yes the body will follow. The faster you ride the more your head is above or in line with the bars. Throttle control is key as well. For beginners. 👍

    Great vid. I used to race around a field when I was a teenager. Now in my forties I'm on my bike again and am taking it to the track. I've only been on the track four times and am trying to use the techniques in this clip to try and head off bad habits before I get into them. I really feel these tips have helped me - moving forward at jumps I feel like a part of the bike rather than like I'm fighting it. Feels good! Question: I ride tracks where it's mainly deep sand. I understand it's best to keep the weight back on the bike in sand. So do I still move as far forward at the jumps? Thanks.

    How I use the clatch and the gas in the take off of a jump ? Do I just need to let the gas off ? And also, how the gears work while we are on the air? If I jump with the 4th gear, should I change into the 2th gear just before the landing?

    • @dreamstarusa
      @dreamstarusa Před 9 lety +1

      iaso dim regarding your "gas and clutch" comment.... Don't use the clutch on the face of the jump. You should have your speed already once you hit the face. Use a small jump, and i recommend 3rd gear - come in with your speed already, and MAINTAIN the throtlle constant til you leave. Regarding your "gear" comment. You could go from 4th to 3rd in the air - yes. or from 3rd to 2rd in the air, but that will slow you down a little at landing, so perfect for a corner. In some case, yes from 4th to 2nd is fine. good luck

    Someone help me, I have been riding for almost 8 years now, but I never rode on a track, ever before. I have never even set foot on one up until this past weekend. I rode my 16 CRF150F around the track a few times, and it was very fun. Since I was a beginner, I didn't do any of the jumps, I just rolled over them. Keep in mind I was on the youth track, so the highest jump was about 5 feet high. My friend kept encouraging me to try the jump, so I finally said I would do it. There was some CR85s, CRF150Rs, and even the CRF125F trail bike was hitting the jump like a race bike, and he did pretty good. So I got set up, and I gunned it when I was about to hit it, and as soon as I hit it, I barely even got any air because my front wheel immediately came down first, then I lost control and crashed. Is it my bike or is it me?

      Buy a new 250 four stroke tho. A used one will have an engine that's a time bomb. Four strokes are expensive to rebuild if the previous owner didn't do his 30 hr maintenance regularly.

    im new to MX, and have a KX 125.. im pretty confident around the track, and cornering seams to be where i am best, But jumping is an issue..
    Where i ride, there are some big jumps, 25ft+ table tops etc.
    I find that every jump i do, i seam to endo in mid air, really badly..
    my body weight isnt forward like on this video.. if i had my body that far forward, id be thrown over the bars..
    I have to physically lean over the rear mud guard just to keep my bike level in mid air!
    Anyone help??

    • @dreamstarusa

      yes, very much.
      You should be standing the whole time, and make sure you are not standing at the last minute.... come in already standing up so you are not rushed.

      your neutral position will be ahead of the bike to counter acceleration forces. This video is correct in that sense. Depending on how you hit the jump and what you want to get out of it, you need to adjust your body to stay "neutral"

    • @dreamstarusa
      @dreamstarusa Před 10 lety

    • @dreamstarusa
      @dreamstarusa Před 10 lety

      joshjamesguitar sorry I just saw this.... jumps with little runs are not good choices for practice. When you practice, you want a very "easy setup" so you can concentrate on the technique at hand. That being said, if you don't have anything else, you could try if the face is not steep. The key is to start small. Good luck!

      Actually Jeremy is the king of riding forward.. even while jumping. The reason you see it here is because the footage is stopped... if you slow down footage of Jeremy on the faces... it usually looks like this as well... but feel free to try and report

      dreamstarusa Wrong, it depends on the jump. Not all tracks have jumps that give you enough time to set up, like coming out of a corner and so on. And some jumps are just easier to seat bounce. It depends on your riding style and the rhythm you have going through that section.

      @dreamstarusa Před 10 lety

I personally don't have them , but what I do is try to stand right before my front wheel goes over ( obviously not fully standing lol ) , and I keep myself at a height where I am off the seat but my knees are still bent . Also try to keep yourself centered , if you're too forward u could nosedive , or if you're too far back you could wheelie.

  • @thomaswilliams1963
    @thomaswilliams1963 Před 10 lety +2

    The basic way to hit a jump is to understand balance. Position focused advice like this simplifies too much, and leads to poor understanding. If you are accelerating very hard, you should be forward (head out past the clamps even). If you have a BTL clutch, and coast into and off a jump...or coast off on a 2 stroke...you will be more neutral. If you are coasting with a 4 stroke (engine braking) or on the brakes, then your body will be back (head still over the clamps...but hips back). The basic way to approach is to be in balance such that you are not pushing or pulling on the bars.
    If you are in this degree of balance, the remaining adjustments can be made by doing what Ty says. As the front wheel leaves...you FEEL the bike pitching forward (endo) or back (nose high). Then you react by shifting your body and using the throttle to get the attitude right just BEFORE the rear wheel leaves the face. It is a split second...but in that time period as the bike unloads...you can make a lot of adjustments.
    When you learn balance, position becomes a RESULT of you feeling where you need to be. Instruction that tells you to 'hold' a certain position is wrong, simplistic, and dangerous.

    • @dreamstarusa
      @dreamstarusa Před 10 lety +2

      The position taught in this tutorial will teach the students about balance. Over time and repetition, he will learn what the perfect body position is for each instance you have mentioned.

    Meanwhile all MX schools insist on jumps being taught after a few to several lessons.... well for the men at least. Seen women getting to learn jumps their first time at an MX school with only street riding under their belt (the guys with riding experience still have to take a few lessons or more just to get to jumping). this is why I'm against riding schools if they're gonna pull this double standards BS.
