I'm already fucking terrified of darkness and have mild claustrophobia so the idea of getting trapped inside an abandoned, runned down, dark building completely locked it's my prime nightmare.
For a parody, Grave Encounter had me legit scared at times

@@Dukesparrow1999 I wasn't too big on the actual reality tv parts because it feels far too fake and too obviously made by people that hate paranormal shows.
When it actually got to the real haunting though, that was awesome. I love that it wasn't just "Boo! A ghost" haunting and actually warped reality in horrible ways.

I got this overwhelming feeling of dread, when they were finally able to get the entrance open. Only to open up to just another hallway. 😱
Grave Encounter 2 is clearly inferior to the original, but there is 1 scene that absolutely blew me away and gave me genuine creeps..

When they SEEMINGLY escape the mental asylum and reach their hotel room elevator.
And the moment elevator door opens, it leads to the hallway of the asylum..
The concept was too scary for me...

Yea, but it's just a reiteration of scene where they open the exit door in GE1 and it leads to another corridor. Which is actually one of the best scenes from GE1 for me :)

And the moment you open bathroom's door, the HELL AWAITS YOU on the other side.
There is no escape.
I think that's beyond scary.

And given the fact that you make the discovery from the characters' point of view, looking out into the dark hallway with them, it almost feels like you're trapped there too, and it makes you all the more grateful that you're not. The thought of being in such a situation like that was enough to scare me on its own. 😶
now you've got me wishing Grave Encounters was a mini-series: like an outright fictional ghost hunting show where the cast gets increasingly more desperate for "something new/real" until the finale where they get wiped out.

I just love the scene where they pay the gardener to make him say he saw ghosts. His acting is priceless. Decent film, they should have brought Jeffrey Combs to play the doctor.

Breaking down the front door only to reveal another hallway was my first taste of incomprehensible cosmic horror as a teen. The realization of “Oh shit, the rules of reality no longer apply and there’s nothing they can do” was chilling in a way few movies are for me

I love that sh*t. This movie is hot garbage but it has such a special place in my heart for that reason 😂 it’s better to have tried and failed at a unique concept than to have made the same horror movie that’s been made for years only with different actors 😉

Man when i was younger and watched the blair witch for the first time, when they realise its like been nighttime for like 3 days scared me so much
I stayed at the Stanley Hotel a few summers ago and our tour guide absolutely tore apart the Ghost Adventures guy for randomly bringing mattresses into a warehouse on their grounds and fabricating a story that the warehouse was actually once a ward for typhus patients
I haven’t stayed at The Stanley but I did their ghost tour. There were 2 middle aged ladies on the tour and every time the tour guide would say ‘Some people say they can see/hear/smell blah blah blah in this location’ the ladies would go nuts. ‘We hear it! We smell it!’ They were actually hilarious.

@@emilywilhite5807 reminds me of a scene from a manga that pokes fun at that sort of people. That kind of people will absolutely eat up anything that would give a confirmation or validation to their obsession and bias, and often fell prey to scammers or con that exploited their weakness
my favorite part of the stanley was the one room with the old paint scheme. kubrick's team walked in, saw the bright pastel whites and yellows and said we can't film a horror movie here! and then had the whole place repaint in darker colors.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen thumbnails use the roaring ghost lady that stood in the corner or the tall lanky ghost we see climbing out a patient window in the sequel. 😆

I’m so glad someone pointed this out. That line destroyed me. These characters were clearly in over their head and it eventually hurts to watch them suffer so much.

I remember my friend wanted to watch it and it went from us joking around about it and then when things got serious we were all quiet just watching it because it actually did get really good and scary. Then I showed my gf and her family and they did the same thing, and I just said “it gets interesting.” And then they did the same thing and just stayed quiet and watched the whole movie

It's very funny and fun, until it starts focusing on the characters having legit breakdowns and trying to hold it together. Then it does a good job of being kind of genuinely creepy.

One thing I really enjoyed about this film is how the characters grew on me over the course of the film. So many horror films just stock their cast with expendable jerks, so there was something really satisfying about the group banding together as shit hits the fan. Once a serious threat is established they never intentionally separate and even as they get frustrated they never truly lash out at each other. Even though they argue they still support each other and watch each other’s back. I remember there being one part where Sasha basically has a panic attack while the group is trying to flee and instead of abandoning or harassing her for it, Lance supports her and talks her through the worst of it so she can run with them. The fact that these characters became more and more sympathetic throughout the movie made me dread their deaths more and more, and it meant their deaths had a much greater impact on me than most horror films.
God i remember seeing an episode of Most Haunted where the physics tells the woman presenting that a ghost called her a bitch and she starts freaking out and shouting at this 'ghost'. One of the funniest things I've ever seen

@@Winters91 he was, if you’re talking about the episode I’m thinking of it’s the one where the lady who owned the house kept making v strange racially motivated comments and they didn’t bother her because she was an old lady in the south but the psychic wasn’t gonna deal with that, One of my few begrudging bits of base respect for fake psychics is honestly when they do shit like that.
Everytime someone asks me what found footage horror to recommend, I always suggest 'grave encounters'. And all of them love or like it.
I watched this at like 13 and didn't realise it was even parodying anything lol just found it terrifying especially the second one where the hotel lift doors open and they're still in the building

I honestly love this movie. It’s got some great jokes, good scares, and is just so unique. But my favorite parts are when you don’t see the ghosts. When there’s the buildup and when the hospital is changing; that kind of stuff.
Ghost Adventurers's Gettysburg episode was freaking great. I'll never forget "I'm pregnant".
Let's be honest, Gettysburg is probably the most haunted place in America if ghosts exist.

All I’m saying is trust. If ghost facers from supernatural is what you’re referring to then watch this. It’s actually great and to a certain degree you will see ghost facers in it. It’s hilarious and a pretty good film. Nothing amazing, but definitely not bad. I enjoy it a lot and if you enjoyed ghost facers from supernatural then you will enjoy this. Think of it as an extended episode of one of those, but without the boys to save the day or stop deaths/ help them get out. I say check it out though if you never have. I definitely recommend!

I wrote this before I watched Ryan's analysis and then.."I was confusion", lol. I had to rewatch his video on "REC" to see that they are two different movies! A LOT of CZcams sites use THIS movie's "demon face" for their "found-footage/REC" thumbnails, so when Ryan used this footage in REC.. and then here...🥴

The filming location was used in Supernatural about a hundred times. Riverside Hospital in Vancouver.
If you've watched Supernatural, The X Files or any number of other shows shot in VC you won't see a single square inch of the location in this movie that you haven't already seen before, and once you notice the distinctive parts, like the exterior entrances, lobby or the interior stairs with the big window (where the camera is placed when the light falls down in Grave Encounters) you'll never be able to unsee it.
I recently re-watched Supernatural myself and practically every second episode I found myself thinking "Hey, there's Riverside again!"

I know, eh? Like I watch all the ghost/monster hunting shows and the amount of times I’ve had to explain that it’s not that I believe any of it, but the story/history/folklore/etc that comes with it is fascinating, in order to make them stop looking at me weird lol.

I can't resist dipping back into it now and then. It's a shame that Zak is so scared of air travel now that the show is forever stuck in the US though.
I don't believe any of it, and the science they tout is junk, but I have some affection for old Zak and Aaron (Billy can do one).
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO LOVES THIS MOVIE AS MUCH AS I DO.... Damn it Ryan where were these videos last year when I was developing my thesis papers on The American Paranormal Horror genre, I mostly focused on the two Haunting On Haunted Hill films, and the two Grave encounters films, and compared and contrasted the films and the themes within them.

I'm currently drafting the thesis along with my feature film script(which will pair with it at my thesis defence) which is essentially (elevator pitch time) Grave Encounters and House On Haunted Hill mixed together with a bit of the Tales from the Crypt episode of Television Terror and wraps it up with a original (60's) Scooby-Doo style ending, with the visual & editing style of Mandy(with Nicholas Cage). So I'll be able to post everything after my thesis defence in the winter!
@@SourOasis Ryan said it best when he described them as "horror comfort food" essentially the theory of the thesis is that modern big budget studio supernatural horror films has evolved into Christian Horror, focusing on some restored sense of faith and themes of the christian God over coming evil and The Devil, as opposed to independent and retro/classic films in the genre which focus more on the horrors of the unknown, trauma, revenge, and regret. and also touches upon how The Conjuring series is kind of misogynistic with it's narratives. BUT Yes I do intend on making all my research and thesis public for any other Horror bugs out there looking for some "academic" material

From these kind of shows I really liked Fact or Faked on SyFy. It was fun, a nice mix between MythBusters and Ghost Hunters.
My favorite part of Fact or Faked was always the beginning when the team members would share their videos; that was always a fun time. (Of course, that was *before* I found out that I could just watch those types of collections here on YT lol). But depending on the episode, for as unique as it was, the debunking was either a bit too boring or the investigation a bit too generic.

Beyond belief: fact or fiction. Hosted by jonathan cornfrakes. That show was always on chiller and I fucking LOVED IT.
I'm usually very critical of found footage horror movies but this one was the rare one as it was entertaining and it wasn't boring.
Also the filming location was at an actual mental institute called Riverview in Coquitlam, British Columbia. My city. And yes it was closed down and is mostly kept currently as a filming location for television shows and movies.
Yeah, that's why this movie freaked me out, too, because I also live in Coquitlam! I've heard too many stories of people seeing things on the grounds at night, and I'm a giant weenie, so... Too scary for me!

But yeah, my mom worked there for a year as a student nurse and she scared me a whole ton about that place. It also looks very haunted. I wouldn't want to go there at all.

As an aside, I find stories where people are lost in an infinite (or seemingly infinite) space to be especially unsettling. I blame this movie for sparking that interest.
Also, I feel the need to shout out Scariest Places on Earth, a show I loved as a kid. Zelda Rubinstein's narration was perfect. I can feel the lazy Sunday morning breeze just thinking about it.
That last sentence was meant to illustrate my nostalgia, since that's when it aired; I didn't realize it was actually Sunday morning right now. Nice breeze too.
Boy I wish they still did the documentary style haunted shows in the U.K. Growing up we had things like CASTLE GHOSTS OF (ENGLAND/SCOTLAND/IRELAND), HAUNTED HOTELS and GHOST STORIES that were all essential viewing.
They do hundreds of these on Amazon, they're all dogshit but I'll watch every single one

I am so glad you talked about this movie today of all days. A year ago this month I had finished my first screenplay in 3 years for a low-budget found footage parody movie highly inspired by this film, Ghostbusters, Ghostwatch, and BuzzFeed Unsolved. Because of COVID, I never got to actually film it, and it made me very sad to revisit the project or any other project for a while because of how much time and effort I had put into it and how at the time it seemed that it was all for nothing. In the year since however, I've gotten the chance to grow more as a writer, and your videos have helped so much in that growth. Just yesterday, I finished my first draft of a no-budget feature-length horror comedy I hope to produce this summer. As for the found footage parody, I'm hoping to craft a pitch bible and pilot script for a TV show adaptation of it. Whether it comes to fruition or not, that project and this film hold a very special place in my heart, and to be reminded of it today really impacted me and put this whole past year of my creative journey into perspective. I just wanted to say thank you for that. Keep up the fantastic work!

When paired with the 2nd movie, mainly for the “explanations” of the bad cgi in the 1st movie, I truly do feel the first movie is practically as flawless as it can be.

@@charles67198 sorry for the late reply, basically in the second movie the first movie actually exists and they talk about the characters in the first one by using their actual names but they treat it like they were actually filming a ghost hunting show and that they were just using their stage names, and everything still happened but that the studio took the footage and added the bad cgi (the hands coming through the wall and the spooky 2011, or so, face filter) to make it look more convincing that it was all fake and then used the footage to market it as a movie (Grave Encounters) It’s meta as hell but pulls it off amazingly well without overdoing it.

Within the narrative of the 2nd film it directly tells you that the guy running the movie studio was lying to him about the "bad cgi", and the studio did nothing other than cut together the raw tapes and release it as a movie to try to recover any financial loses and cover-up their liability in this tragedy. The story of the 2nd film is that the ghost basically made a snuff film and tricked a film studio into releasing it, then with the power it gained it could effect things outside the asylum and lured this new group their to make another snuff film.
This movie isn't perfect but it is very underrated

I recently read a book that opens with a similar plot, called "Killer Candy" by Jason Murphy. It does the whole "Ghost Hunting team runs into real paranormal event" as it opening first two chapter. Which what happens after is a pretty fun and spooky story that feels very much like Sam Raimi style of horror comedy films

I remember watching Grave Encounters back to back with The Descent a few years ago with a few friends. And while The Descent really didn't work for us, Grave Encounters really got us...
Watched this back when it was new. Despite its bad improvised dialog I loved this film so much for the reasons you explained, mainly that something actually happened in a Ghost Hunters episode.

There's one found footage film that I watched with my friends while drinking. Australian film called The Tunnel. We were prepared for a funny little horror flick but in the end the movie really creeped us out.
Yes! Thank you for talking about this movie, and from that angle - it’s long been one of my favorites for the dark comedy of how it descends from the crew playacting horror at little spooky events to impossible architecture and genuine fear for their lives

As someone who does indeed love the first movie, Ryan is dead on: I also really liked the second movie, but if you're at all lukewarm on the first movie I can see absolutely *hating* #2. It commits totally to what it's trying to be, which works if you vibe with the sheer wackiness but *really* doesn't if you don't.
Yessssss!!! I love this movie! I first watched it with a friend and thought, "oh it's just a crappy low budget ghost horror movie" but afterward I was like, "omg, this is one of my favorite movies!" Even though it is kind of a low budget corny ghost horror, I just really like the plot and the characters.
Oh fuck yes. I watched this for Halloween last year and it jumped to the absolute top of my list. So excited to hear your take

Literally one of my favorite horror movies of all time and to anyone who has a problem with the CGI my question is "how exactly is a ghost or demon supposed to look?"
You should watch Asian horror films. They have the scariest looking ghosts while using makeup and none to very little CGI
That’s just a a bad excuse. The designs are fine, it’s the bad cg that’s the problem
I kind of like the aspect of bad CGI because at the beginning the director stated that they purposely made the CGI look bad so people wouldn't think its real
@@neongoatguts I want a found footage movie where ghost knows all horror tropes, so he mocks people he tortures by doing the most obvious things.
You know, throwing things obviously across the room, the "Haha i am your reflection in the mirror" scare, standing behind someone when they are talking to someone else, completely oblivious of the fact a demon is standing behind them etc.
Or even just looking like a bad CGI, so nobody believes them if they do escape.
It was kinda done in Hi, I'm Mary Mary (if i remember the title right) youtube series, but a Hollywood production like that would put a smile on my face.

I’d love to see you cover the A Haunting episode about the Snedeker families experiences in the late 80’s. I remember watching the tv special with my mom and it terrified us. Then the 09 movie came out and we laughed our asses off at it
I find it hard to believe someone who made it through the Poughkeepsie Tapes and the House Jack Built would be “broken” by Grave Encounters.

This film really brings back lots of nostalgia of my early youtube days. Looking up paranormal videos uploaded to the internet and video game mysteries and creepypastas. The film captures that style of an era so effectively that I can't help but have so much appreciation for the film. I love it.
I’m a horror movie buff and I find a lot of horror movies don’t really effect me anymore. I want to be scared and be jittery when I go to bed at night but I’ve seen so many horror films that not much really scares me anymore.
I watched this film yesterday, and Grave Encounters really effected me. It’s kinda funny since many didn’t find it too scary, but ‘impossible horror’ is my kryptonite and contains many of my favourite horror tropes.
Never ending hallways, the exit opening to more of the hospital, the roof access being blocked by a wall that was not there previously… shit like that always gets me. I had plenty of nightmares afterwards full of the trope where if a door closes or if you take your eye off of who you’re with for too long and they wander they just disappear since the area is ever changing. A door closing and as soon as you open it those that were behind the door and the previous setting had changed
This was such a fun film to watch, and I really enjoyed that they made fun of the techniques that reality ghost hunting shows do! And yeah, the effects are a bit cheesy at times (when the ghosts' faces distort mainly), but definitely a fun film to watch with friends over! Also, I really liked the way that the hospital was never ending, always changing wings (kind of reminded me of the Winchester House), and I did appreciate that they didn't go for a cheesy ending.. I liked the way that they ended it, because it's something that does stick with you
EDIT: If possible, please do a video on Ghostwatch!! It only aired once on the BBC and it's caused such an uproar because people thought it was real; it's such a good film and it was so so creepy!!

I was about to watch a grave encounter clip after watching foundflix grave encounter explained.
I was a ghost hunter in college and can confirm that it's basically a lot of sitting around mostly quietly in the dark waiting for something to happen.
This movie kept me awake at night for a week, and then had me sleep with the lights on for the next three. The girl vanishing in the fog by the end filled me with unspeakable terror.
Ghost Hunting shows were big in the mid 2000’s, as a Brit I remember Most Haunted and fake shit like that. Tbh I do think there is some kinda truth in ghosts, but these Ghost Hunting shows were completely fake. The amount of times something moved that you didn’t see on the show and the crew would all run and shit like that, completely fake.

Wasn't Zach Bagans the one who made that editing mistake, and left in some footage he uploaded to CZcams of him and his cameraman faking a door moving? It was the exact same kind of casual glimpse behind the scenes as in Grave Encounters

The problem with a SERIES about ghosts is the whole expectation that ghosts can be sceduled to show up on a weekly basis, I suppose.
Oh, and the fact that ghosts don't exist.
I dunno, it's kinda like those fishing shows - when they go out to film they might catch the biggest fish on the first day or when they come back in a month (after talking to the locals) but they just edit the footage to fit a narrative. If they fake a big one getting away as the episode climax it's pretty much the same show.
Oh damn, I weirdly love this movie and it's sequel since they released. The Outlast Games are also dope. Great video Ryan dude
I have a rare appreciation for this film and I don't care who knows it.
The still, quiet scene upstairs showing the open window and it being pitch black "outside" when it was supposed to be morning said more than any of the jump scares.
I appreciate this film simply for taking the typical found footage formula of not showing much at all, and instead just point the camera right at it. Basically just flipping the bird to that trope.

I’m so happy you made this video!!! Grave Encounters is so near and dear to my heart. When I first watched it, it was my favorite horror movie and the only movie to scare my older sister to this date! (The scene where the girl’s hair lifts up by itself made my sister SCREAM)
I love Grave Encounters because it captured how Ghost Adventures felt so well. The character that's based on Zak Bagins was just perfect.
Will you ever touch Grave Encounters 2? They do one of the coolest twists I’ve seen in a horror film, and I love how they evolve the formula! It’s still trashy, but enjoyable trashy!

I love this movie. I also think it was a nice touch that the first crazy unexplainable thing, the awesome front door hallway reveal, happens about 40 min into the movie which was the typical runtime of those ghost hunting shows. So it was like a normal episode that the asylum refused to let them end
I put Grave Encounters into a particular microgenre of horror films that I think of as "spookhouse movies". They're basically the movie equivalent of carnival spookhouses or the haunted attractions that pop up in Halloween season. They embrace overtly contrived tension and jump scares, and use the narrative as a vehicle to jump from scare to scare, showcasing novel and creative horror imagery without being overly concerned with exposition, the same way haunted attractions take you through a series of "scenes". Some other examples would be Oculus, Ghost Stories, and Terrified from Argentina.
