    Great walkthrough - this thing looks awesome!!! I wish I could justify getting this - if I was tracking full band regularly it would be a no-brainer!

      completely different animals, those two consoles. The matrix is an over=priced DAW controller. No preamps, no EQ, no compression

    Thanks for this overview! It's a super nice console! One more question: How flexible is the Origin, when you have to service/fix stuff? Can you pull out channels like on the old SSLs, or can you pull out buckets of 8 or something?

    Great video, one quick question if I may. Do you power the board down every day or do you just put it in sleep mode?

  • @ivet22
    @ivet22 Před 2 lety +2

    Don't you miss having dynamics on the channel strip?

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  Před 2 lety +1

      not really, but its not like I have a choice...LOL. The Origin does not have dynamics. However, you could always add a 500 series rack and add the SSL dynamics and insert them on each channel. Although that's another 35K to do that on all 32 channels. I may at one point add 10 of them in one 500 rack just to try it and over time I can add more. I would love to hear the difference myself....LOL

    All I can say is these little square grey switch buttons are a pain when they don't have a corresponding LED. Can't see whether they are ON or OFF from the sitting position. You can easily get confused when mixing a big session.
    They should have put one LED on every switch for few bucks more...
    As for getting a strip out for servicing,
    if I remember correctly even the Duality
    have buckets of 8 strips. Not very practical when you need to work but a strip goes down and want it repaired.

      @@MixingMusicAnalog Thanks for posting !
      In 2011, we wanted to change our old
      Raindirk board. At the NY AES there were the new Duality and the new API Legacy Plus.
      As the SSL guy was giving me a demo of the Duality, although he was very nice, he had problems remembering each of the multiple single switch functions.
      I was also a bit confused because when the same litle switch has a different function depending on what another one does, as an old fashion sound engineer,
      I wasn't thrilled... And if I remember all the switches didn't have a LED...
      And the the board was all plastic and 8 strip buckets....
      Then I sat in front of the API. Just guess.😏 And the prices at that time were pretty close for a similar configuration. SSL went from their flagship 9000K to the Duality in one step. Wasn't a bad economic move.
      But API is still building its top consoles
      the same way they did 50 years ago with
      improvements of course, but no real trade-off... But if people still want to buy a real brand new console under $ 70k,
      I assume that SSL has the formula. The Origin feels to me like a strange in- between situation... Unless you record bands and multiple musicians sessions on a regular basis, use Eq on tracking and always choose SSL Micpres on every instrument, I don't know what is the purpose of that kind of board...
      We all have to use DAW's tools nowadays to compete in the business.
      We need fast instant reset-recall on everything with surgical precision processing and the ability to refine any mix in minutes. In the last few years I couldn't mix on the API with all the external gear...Takes too much time to setup, take notes and pictures of the setups, patch cords routing, etc...
      So I just wonder who buys the Origin and why they chose that board....
      Thanks !

      @@MixingMusicAnalog it was Trevor Horn that said that

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  Před 2 lety

      No offense here but I want to understand......
      So you never used an Origin yourself or have listened to one in person? How can you make the statement that it's "fractionally" better than a Mackie when you have no experience with it? Just because Trevor Horn made that statement? So I guess it has to be true? I guess he's the expert in all things consoles and his word is the bottom line?
      People should not make comments on things when they have no personal experience. That misleads people and isn't fair to the manufacture because unless you have actually used an Origin or at the very least stood in the room with one and listened to it, you really have no idea for yourself.
      Now, if someone who has actually used a piece of gear and says its' not great because they personally have used it and made that determination for themselves, that's totally valid. However, to just leave a short comment like "fractionally better than a Mackie" makes the assumption that it's not a very good console and you really don't know that.
      So, for anyone else reading this thread.....take what you see people write with a grain of salt. If you really want to know what an Origin console or any console for that matter can do or sound like then go find a studio where you can demo it and hear it for yourself. Then, if you think it's still only "fractionally" better then, by all means, your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, but unless you have firsthand experience, then you should refrain from such comments.
