I've only hugged my friends for a prolonged time when they had had a break-up or were intensely sad for another reason. as a lesbian I've never cuddled with any of my exclusively female friends even when I didn't know my sexual orientation, none of my straight friends did either. and men are much less touchy because any touching between males is considered gay by straight men so I really doubt a straight man would want to touch another man unless it was a one-off joke. he definitely seems at least bicurious
It could be a case of many people in chat just not having friends that cuddle like he does. I have a friend for 15 years and I do not touch her within a five foot pole. It's normal for friends to cuddle but I doubt it's normal for people who just goes through life without that kind of affection from friends.
