  • Taiwan’s phone scammers have gained global notoriety. By some underground estimates, there are more than 100,000 people in Taiwan who are involved in scam rings. Years of police crackdowns have failed to dislodge them - in fact Taiwan’s scammers continue to flourish, and now on a global scale.
    How exactly are the fraud rings able to do this, and why is it so difficult for authorities to tackle the problem? In this episode of CNA Correspondent, Victoria Jen interviews former fraudsters and Taiwan’s top investigator to find out.

    Such scammers are so heartless to prey on the vulnerable and old. Imagine losing all or a big part of your lifetime saving, how to deal with livelihood in old age? I dunno understand why these scam rings cannot be eradicated. I think the punishment must be higher to send a deterrent. Also, a fund should be set up to take care of victims.

      It baffles me that some of these CCP type scammers hack into a computer, but don't have enough savvy to pass as authentic. China has witnessed a lot more of this behavior in the last 5 years and many of these thugs have to hide out in SE Asia. It's comical. They come across as a 14-year-old ESL student...imagine doing all that work to hack and spy...and then people don't take you seriously. Poor guys. I genuinely feel bad for them--they're just not taken seriously in China or abroad anymore. Xi would absolutely treat them as a thug with some jail time. I just hope they find something bigger than self-serving interests.

Besides scammers schemes keep on evolving. The key is not to be overconfident. There are people who blame victims for falling for it instead of symphatizing witht them and be grateful it did not happen to them.

      The List is sold to them by other scammers or compiled by them of, for example, of all the Mainland Chinese living in Taiwan, etc..Immigrants, Migrants and Refugees make easy marks for scammers, since they are often unaware how things work in their host country! Even citizens fall for the scams!
      They may look through FB and other social platforms.. They message bait on ur phone or on social platforms.. 'Did you receive your rebait of $120 from your Auto insurance company u are entitled to? ", I received recently.. And the Govt Auto insurance Co was actually giving out the gas rebates, but they would notify and send by your post office mail, and never by text message nor email nor phone!
      So, when in doubt, call directly, or go to the website, to the Auto Insurance company, Govt agency, etc, whatever the message was about! Never click on the links the text provided! Blacklist the number..
      Usually, Govts and police encourage us to report these messages and numbers on the website they created to combat fraud.. I get too many such messages to bother each time!

    • @lenitaa7938
      @lenitaa7938 Před 2 lety +2

      Best to walk away, go for a walk, take deep breaths and think! Call a friend, a relative to talk it out, advice,.. Then, call police, etc to check if it is true! Besides, police never leave such messages, as they will tell you.
