  • Welcome back to our channel! In today's video, we’re showing you how to make two fantastic DIY parrot toys that will keep your feathered friends entertained and mentally stimulated. These toys are simple to create and use materials that are safe for your parrot. Plus, enriching your parrot’s environment is crucial for their well-being and can prevent boredom-related behaviours.
Toy 1: Hanging Toy with Slices of Wood
Our first DIY project is a hanging toy made from slices of wood. This toy is great for encouraging shredding and keeping beaks busy. Here’s how you can make it:
    1. Materials Needed:
    - Parrot-safe wood slices (we used Beech wood) Find a list of parrot-friendly wood on our website here: mailchi.mp/par...
    - Non-toxic string or rope (sisal rope or hemp rope works great)
    - Egg cartons or other recyclable non-toxic materials such as cardboard
    - Drill
    2. Steps:
    - First, ensure the wood is safe and sterilised. You can spray it with F10 and leave it for 15 minutes or heat sterilise it by baking at 200 degrees for 20 minutes in an oven, then let it cool in the oven for an hour or two. For detailed instructions, check out this resource:

    - Drill a hole through the centre of each wood slice.
    - Thread the slices onto the string or rope, and intersperse other safe materials, such as cardboard, paper or pinecones for diversity in textures.
    - Hang the toy in your parrot’s cage, ensuring there are no loops where your bird could get caught.
Toy 2: Coconut Shell Toy with Nut Butter and Treats
Our second DIY project is a coconut shell toy that’s perfect for foraging. Parrots love working to get their treats, and this toy provides both a challenge and a reward.
    1. Materials Needed:
    - Cleaned coconut shell
    - Nut butter (ensure it’s parrot-safe and free from additives)
    - Parrot-safe treats (such as nuts, seeds, or dried fruit; remember these high sugar / fat ingredients should only be used sparingly and as a treat.)
    2. Steps:
    - Clean the coconut shell thoroughly and ensure there are no sharp edges.
    - Smear a thin layer of nut butter on the inside of the coconut shell.
    - Press the treats into the nut butter, making sure they stick well.
    - Hang the coconut shell in your parrot’s cage or place it in their play area, making sure to avoid creating loops within the rope that could harm your bird.
    Safety Tips:
    - Always supervise your parrot while they’re playing with new toys.
    - Regularly check the toys for wear and tear and replace them as needed to prevent injury.
    - When hanging toys, be sure to avoid creating a loop that your bird could get caught in while playing.
Creating these DIY parrot toys is a fun and rewarding way to enrich your parrot’s life. Not only do these toys provide mental stimulation and physical activity, but they also strengthen the bond between you and your feathered friend.
