- The Rugby World Cup 2023 got off to the best possible start as France and New Zealand played in an opening day thriller at the Stade de France in Saint Denis!
The Pool A encounter was always going to be a cracker of a match as the hosts welcomed the All Blacks, who had never lost a Rugby World Cup pool match to kick off this year's tournament.

That's a good point, there are important calls that can influence the outcome of a game, would be nice to scrutinize those calls in the highlights
Good point, the game is pretty much a game of penalties rather than anything resembling rugby.
The morons that make these clips don't care about the game or what the spectators want. So sit quietly and watch the goal kickers kick goals - and be grateful they let you see that without paying.

Not often if at all could we say that the fear factor has diminished somewhat when playing mightily renowned AB’s. That performance was spot on from France.

I disagree. The whole of the second half was played in New Zealand territory. If anything, New Zealand's efectiveness allowed them to score one try in the 15 seconds in which they crossed the midfield and that helped them make the score look better.

I remember a time when the kiwis were literally unbeatable. Just to score a try on them was a miracle. The standards have fallen greatly.

Remember that when we won the world cup, we had lost to you guys in the opening fixture, quite dominantly too.
I remember telling my brother that it was a good thing we played New Zealand and lost in the first game because it gave us the opportunity to see all our weaknesses early in the tournament and work on them.
We went on to win all of our games after that and took the world cup.
Don't look at this loss in a negative way.
It's a good thing. The teams that have it easy in the group stage almost never win a tournament.
It's the teams with a hard road that win because they get to learn and improve.

I picked France to win it all this time around. But remember: no team has beaten the All Blacks before the finals and gone on to lift the Cup.

I don't watch rugby... I don't know the rules besides no forward passing or high/dangerous tackles. But wow watching high level sports highlights is always entertaining - France scoring twice in a way that made me wish I was a fan and emotionally invested like they looked pretty good to me 💀😅

As a kiwi France deserves to win, too many errors are haunting the all blacks game play, plus the French played a better game plan too. There were signs that the all blacks did good things, but consistency for the full 80 minutes is how you win games, not like this.
too much reliance on flashy stuff like they did at the last world cup. Too many bolters and not enough linbe breakers. Bring back Nonu, Sonny Bill and even Fekitoa
The amount of penalties the ABs are committing is ridiculous.
They really need to go back to the times when they kept the ball in hand and the ball carrier was supported... run back into the forwards, recycle and back out again. The number of times NZ kicked away possession was criminal@@naisyjohns

New Zealand still look insanely good. If they played again, it could be the other way around. Two amazing teams.
Felt that both teams are still far from their peak ! The games will probably look much better after the pool stage. AB's attack feels really strong but they really do need to fix their discipline and kicking game.
As much as I love the All Blacks and appreciate that world rugby standards are so high because of the bar they raised, they are not the kings anymore. Definitely not feared by Ireland or France like the used to be. Will always appreciate them because of their dominance for so long, but thanks for making us all better. Love from Ireland

Both teams were very cautious for most of the match, up until that yellow card. I think New Zealand are mentally scarred atm; and after that South Africa game in Twickenham, it really showed them that they're no longer invincible.

NZ have been as ordinary as most teams since 2003... & although they are still a very good side..they have to stop relying on their 'golden years era'.. Most teams have caught them up on today's playing field.

France brought their football skills to rugby
As a french, France NZ has always been my favourite opposition. It's not the same against England, where there are mixed feelings in the rivalry, with history and all that (love on my english bruvs though). With the All Blacks, it's an exclusive sport rivalry, with those magic scenes when we face the haka, and our games are ALWAYS bangers.
Now I only wish Les Bleus to carry on all the way to the top, and for the All Blacks to settle their discipline problems, so we can meet again in final!

Problem is that when the ABs have their best 15 fit on the pitch the look very good! But as soon as we have injuries, the replacements dont produce. Our bench is not the best! We will only win if most of our top boys are out there. Then there is the coaching..... why kick ball away when we are behind?

The All Blacks were consistent in kicking the ball away throughout the match. Why give the ball to the opposition when you have the ball in hand? This performance reminded me of the days of Grant Fox.

Good opening win from France, looks like they could be favourites on home soil. It was a big ask of The All Blacks to step into the gigantic shoes of the Legends and what they achieved in November. Still have a lot work to do but they’ll get there. Just need a bit more confidence like they’re currently undefeated in fifteen tests, six time world and double pacific four champion counterparts. 🇳🇿 🏉 🏆 🌍

France displayed a thriller second half of rugby. I believe Rieko Iaone’s pass to Mark Telea was miles forwards and that’s what fired up this French team. And Jaminet’s try was a thing of beauty. Kudos to them, but New Zealand can fight back.

Lots of aimless lateral passing, with no attempt to take the ball forward first.
The kicking was a good plan early when used timely. It negated the heavy France forwards quicly & for a while France was troubled.. but then an aimless kicking fest and penalties just played it to the French who adjusted and persisted with a good win! Not a good AB play this one. Best to kick sparingly when required and esp cut penalties then do grunt work. Then they have a chance! Fair play to France and the win.

There was a stretch sometime in the final quarter, when France were just playing beautifully chaotic rugby. They play with such passion, and aren't afraid to take risks, because they know they have the skill to back it up.

Indeed, I might take back my word. But while I was watching I noticed that France kept creating gaps in their defences and thought how the Springboks would take advantage of that pretty easily.

Well to be fair, france always seems to be playing as if they were holding back, only turning it out when it matters. Even when they won't the 6 nations. Not to mention, they have to makeshift their playing style because Ntamack is injured. Jalibert is not a like for like replacement, and is not as good at the kicking game as Ntamack.
This ABs team is pathetically bad and feel sorry for themselves, hope SA and Argentina can carry the SH teams.
