How is it even legal to sell it in that state.. it should require a redesign to even be roadworthy.

Because crash test performance doesn't factor in a cars regulatory performance. It should do though. Car crashes poorly? You can sell it - but it's going to have a massive 3rd party insurance cost, pricing the car out of the market.

      1. The Quest is by far not the only poor performer.
      2. The IIHS is not run by the government.

"The 2014 Nissan Quest was even safer than the 1998 Toyota Sienna, let alone the Trans Sport. This probably wouldn't go over well in some car safety circles, but it's the truth. The Quest has side and curtain airbags, better head restraints, and did just as well as the Sienna in the moderate overlap test.
It's because car safety evolves quickly that the Quest is seen as unsafe. Had it been out in 1998, it would have been seen as a revolution in minivan safety. But it was made at a time where it had fallen below average. Nevertheless, Honda and Toyota structurally reinforced their minivans shortly before that Quest test and Kia introduced a redesigned minivan entirely. So by the standards of, say, 2012, the Quest probably would have been close to average.
The Trans Sport was far worse on safety even for its time. Structurally, it was worse than most mid-late 1980s cars, as evidenced by the significant upward dashboard movement in the NHTSA test."

@@haidengameplays The quest and the trans sport were tested in different tests at different times.
The trans sport was the worst performer in the 1997 MODERATE OVERLAP TEST against other minivans.
In the moderate overlap, the 2014 quest got good.
I heavily doubt the trans sport would even survive a small overlap, considering its age and structural collapse in the test (the collapse was so bad that the dummy's foot snapped off.)

Interestingly, they don't necessarily recall / ban the sale of cars that get such a bad rating.... maybe they should start. Make these crash test mandatory and any that receive a poor rating in the overlap test cannot be sold until the issues are resolved.
