This looks like a classic symptom of a dirty mode switch. Putting the tape in and out several times may dislodge the dirt, but I recommend NOT doing this with a tape you care about. The VCR may spit the tape out while it's still loaded in, causing it to snap or other severe damage!

Its the encoder wheel, its a small wheel with a dozen or so contacts on it, tells the board what position the gears are in, if they are dirty the board doesn't know where the gears are so it gets confused which leads to eaten up tape, I just cleaned a vcr Probably same era as in the video, I think its the grease they use gets gunky over time

The solution is relocating the sensor led. Its on the right hand side. Needs to be 1mm away from the metal slider. It will be blocked by slider and will work normally. They tend to move and or hit the slidder arm. I guess i should have done a video?

Mine was doing the same thing with my symphonic DVD VHS player, it worked the first two times with two of my cheaper VHS and played flawlessly so that I wanted to watch one of my more expensive vintage ones and it started doing this crap. I broke the s*** out of it to get my VHS back fortunately the tape is okay.

Don't wanna jynx myself but I saw a comment about something to the right. I tried for 2 hours and this didn't work so I flipped it on its side and pounded it liked it was 2004.
My VHS came out that I didn't want stuck in there and when I tried my next one (Snow Dogs) it worked lol. Hope it wasn't a fluke and hope it keeps working.

I have a Magnavox dual DVD & VCR player that I’ve had for a while and DVD side works fine but since we don’t use the VCR as often it just stopped working like the ones you were working on. I did the process you suggested no less than 25 times and it wouldn’t engage and play the tape. Is there anything else you could recommend to troubleshoot?

As a vcr repairman in the United Kingdom its a common issue with all dvd vcr combo machines it's a dirty mode switch so your best 2 options are to take it to a Vcr Repair centre like mine or you could risk by doing it yourself but be warned because if you break a single part then you will have to get the whole machine fixed by a centre if even possible I would totally do it for u

Thank You so much for the info. as I really appreciate it and if you were here in the U.S. I absolutely would bring it to you for service.😊
I live in Kentucky and there were some places that used to fix them but now that everything has been changed over to DVD trying to find anyone that knows how to work on them is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.😏
I actually went online to see if you could still buy one somewhere and was pleasantly surprised to find that there are actually still some out there. Unfortunately many are refurbished not new and the cost for them is off the charts.😳
I could take it apart and clean the mode switch, but now I think I might be too afraid to as I wouldn’t want to mess up the DVD side since it works fine.😬

I usually POPPED the hood when
    I had that VCR/DVD COMBO.
Then use something to BLOW OUT DUST.
UNCOVER the CD LENS to CLEAN.
    CD CLEANERS also good.
Use ELECTRIC OIL on VCR GEARS.
    Also on DISC TRAY gears.
Then run a VHS TAPE on REWIND.

I recently bought a used VCR player, and it starts, then immediately freezes, and stops repeatedly.
I tried it with three other tapes and it does the same thing with each tape.
I wondered if it was the monitor on top restricting the mechanism, but even with nothing on top, it still freezes as soon as I press play.
Would repeatedly trying [as you did] , eventually free up the tape? What do you think?
