I haven't attended church for years. A friend who is still faithful directed me here after seeing some weird comments on CZcams. Maybe I'm dense, but I don't see anything in this talk that is mean-spirited.
me either. Only those that are easily offended (and guilty) will find fault.
... I don't see why so many people are so riled up about this. I'm a member of the Church who happens to be a lesbian, and nothing here was even hard to hear... Those who are having issues with it need to pray for understanding. If words from our Prophet or Apostles speaking as authorities in the Church are hard to hear... It's not them who has strayed from the iron rod... It's you.
I have had plenty of times where I felt right, only to have time show me I was wrong. That I had strayed from the iron rod. It's hard to admit you are wrong, it's hard to admit you were deceived... but it's necessary. Satan would have us value our pride over our humility, and would have us chasing illusionary rods like a carrot on a stick in front of a donkey... always chasing but never getting ahold of it... Getting further and further away from the real thing. Stop chasing the illusion, and turn back to the real iron rod.
If you need someone who can tell you that God and his Church love the members who struggle with same sex attraction, I can be that someone. God loves me, and even if I don't understand why I was given this particular test... I know it's for my own good. God doesn't give us trials that are meaningless. Our trials, if we endure them well, will bring us closer to him. The closer we are to him the more we can feel his love, and the more we understand that he would never put us through these painful experiences, unless their benefit out weighed our temporary pain.
I testify that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. That God loves us, and only wants what is best for us. That God is perfect, and my own understanding is not. We are the light of the world, a city that is on a hill can not be hid, of course we will attract fire from those who seek to destroy God's work.

As a retired BYU professor, I support, honor and love this man of God and I believe and support all that he has said. Beware how you treat the oracles of God as these are honest and godly men.

We love you and support you and pray for all of the apostles and everyone's life's who are touched for good by those of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints.

I heard so many bad things about this talk to I came to listen for myself. I expected controversy, but was surprised to hear only love. He defends truth and urges others to do so, but to do so with compassion. Really a beautiful talk.
I too listened to find our what all the fuss was about; why there was so much backlash. I found NOTHING to be offensive or unsympathetic . He addressed beautifully and with sincere compassion, a difficult topic. Let those who take offense examine their own hearts. Let those who take offense remember that God cannot "look the other way" when His work and his glory is to bring us to eternal happiness; that end cannot happen if we are unwilling to be held to His truths. If His spokesmen are not speaking up when we err then they are in jeopardy.
President Holland has always had more love in his heart than many, if not most, out there. It is no surprise that he speaks in love.
Truth is difficult for some and sounds like hate.

Thank you, President Holland. My husband and I attended BYU when you were president there. I am so thankful for the moral stand that you uphold and are teaching the teachers. How important that is! I hope we all hear that song and recognize the new song as we march forward together in continuing to build up Zion. We love you.
So proud to have studied at BYU. So proud to be a first gen alumni of this great university. Eternally grateful for my mentors in the biochemistry department, my PI went from a hard boss who pushed me to the limits to a wise friend, mentor, and ultimately someone I looked up to and have a life long professional admiration for. I miss research with him. It prepared me well for the future. Great memories and great spirit there. After leaving the campus and entering the real world, I was able to truly see BYU is the gem that it is. It is different from any other institution I've ever been a part of. I hope my children go there and also do the honor's program; one of the highlights of my time there. I miss BYU almost every day. It's a shame BYU doesn't have a medical campus (dental/medical).
"We look forward to the day when we can beat our swords into plowshares, and our spears into pruning hooks. And at least on this subject...learn more, know more...".
This is the prayer of an apostle who has struggled with a hard topic. Hard truths NEED to be shared, showing an increase of love after a rebuking. Perfect message!
He said "at least on this subject learn war no more."
All I can say and quote Elder Holland from his talk in 2004 is “the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve are commissioned by God and sustained by you as prophets, seers, and revelators”.

I've found with these subjects its one sided war from one side pushing the war. The gospel is love all, teach, have empathy, understanding of all. The gospel principles are gospel principles. This talk was beautiful and perfectly spoken. We will continue to love and teach and work with all of God's children but we will not change principles to suit God's children!
The board of trustees of BYU subsidizes this school with sacred tithing funds of the Church. So each of us must be concerned with institutional integrity-our commitment to academic and spiritual excellence. That integrity can only be safeguarded as each teacher and each student remains individually strong. The integrity of this institution can never be stronger than that of its representatives.

One of the greatest speeches ever given on the BYU campus
I love love love this man. He was my President at BYU. He knew my name and would talk to me on campus. Years later as a young mom, I was richly blessed to sit in his office at church headquarters and receive hope and counsel from an Apostle of God. The love I felt emanating from this man was representitive of my Savior’s love. It was palpable, sweet, joyful and it forever changed my life. I support wholeheartedly everything that Elder Holland says in this raw, deep, rich timely and most of all Loving talk.

How refreshing to see such support of this great man here. The church's main channel has this video posting and it is littered with awful things being taken ridiculously out of context. I can understand those who may feel offended although I don’t feel offended myself and I do not discount his sincerity nor his message.
People who seek to be offended will find offense at every turn.
People chose to be offended. In this case, those who allowed themselves to be offended had made up their minds ahead of time. It wasn't that what Elder said which bothered them, but the topic, itself, bothered them. The Brethren will never waiver from right and wrong, just as the Lord won't. Elder Holland's talk was beautiful and from the heart, with much love. It was the topic that caused some to allow themselves be offended. They expect the Lord to change for them just because, over time, we've allowed moral standards to slip to unthinkable levels, and then think everyone needs to change with the times. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. We change for the Lord! "The Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever!" He does not lower standards just because the world has. I sustain Elder Holland as an Apostle of the Lord, and I'm grateful for his example to the world.
Because the Church is defending itself and reaffirming its stance and not rolling over. So the people who want BYU to become like nearly every school are surprised and angry.

I would imagine this is how Heavenly Father would counsel us, His sons & daughters, all of us (including me) here in this journey back to our heavenly home. "He wept." "He chastise those that He Loves." Time and time again His arms of Grace and Mercy are stretched out still. We Love you and you have our Support, we stand with you for time and all Eternity Elder Holland. The world is claiming that this man ought to put love before truth. To they who say so, you must understand that, without truth, there can be no fold to bring people into with love. Truth is in the safety of the fold.

@@josh621G13 The first commandment is to love God, and we can only do that by obeying his commandments. Same with the second. Love includes being honest with the truth to ourselves and others, and to God.
I heard some discord around this talk, so I came to see for myself. (Elder Holland was the President of BYU when I was there in the early 80's btw,) and I found this a most beautiful and articulate speech - especially about a very difficult topic. I know this is an Apostle of the Lord, and I know that his message is true. I just hope and pray that those who are in opposition to this message will open their hearts and lessen their pride and hear it by the Spirit of the Lord.
Love you Elder Holland (and of course Sister Holland!). Thank you for your stand on hard issues that plague us today. The Lord definitely speaks through you with all the love He would have if He was here addressing these issues today. Your heart must be broken having to address today's challenges.
He never condemned a person for having same-sex attractions. He did mean that narratives that teach breaking the law of chastity are something that will get BYU’s funding pulled and that they are not in line with the doctrine of Christ when they deny that same-sex sex is a sin. That said, we all struggle with sins of all kinds, and the grace of Jesus can save us if we are striving to repent and come unto Him. If people understood the atonement of Jesus Christ and His gospel, they would not be offended at Elder Holland’s message, but rather it would give them hope in Christ that no matter what they struggle with, they can find solace in the Atonement.

A couple of years ago when some individuals interpreted that BYU had loosened its standards, they were halfway to Babylon in less than a week. It must be an extremely tricky balance for Brother Holland to address both the wheat and the tares who teach and study at BYU. Especially when some people alternately play victim and adversary at a university that they love far less than they do the great and spacious building.
People are being deceived in droves, it's sad but true... Any truth taught that is contrary to the world's opinion will be hard to hear for those who have been deceived. This is the time where we will be seeing those who are weak in their testimonies leave the Church because of hearing "hard words". The iron rod doesn't move for anyone, that is part of why it's so beautiful... It's something we can depend on, but people are chasing after illusionary rods... They are making their way to the great and spacious building. I know several people who have let go of the iron rod, and I have been one of those people at times... But more and more I am grasping harder and harder to it. It's a crazy world out there, and I want nothing to do with the ever changing "morals" of it.

I don't believe for a minute that they are.
Not likely but it's is the BYU Speeches page so who knows? The video of this same talk from the Church News reaches a broader audience and has a lot more diversity in it's comments
I don't think people who post these can censor the comments other than to turn them off entirely.
My guess is those who came here angry changed their mind after watching the whole thing instead of just reading a quote or two. In fact, if you keep scrolling through the comments, one of them says that's more or less what happened to them.
I have been good at receiving blessings, but not at keeping the commandments because I know They love me and I will be forgiven. Not any more. Thank you elder Holland.

Thank you for addressing issues that have disturbed me greatly about BYU. The university always needs to reflect the gospel principles. Professors have that responsibility.
I came to this talk because of angry chatter on Facebook. But I left it with an increased sense of gratitude. I’m grateful that Jesus Christ continues to call apostles to guide us through the turmoil and challenges of our time. I’m grateful to hear how much anguish and prayers and tears those apostles offer on behalf of children of God who struggle with deep and challenging issues. I’m grateful those servants of the Lord, imperfect as they are, have enough courage and love to declare God’s truth, even if at times it makes them a lightning rod to the storms of our age.

I love that he said this because for many years, Elder Holland has been my Earthly example of this principle. I am in such awe that he can simultaneously rain such fire on sin and sinful behavior, and yet show so much compassion. What an incredible servant of God.
Thank you Elder Holland. You have no idea how many lives you've strengthened and encouraged. I can't tell you how much strength your talks, both at General Conference and at BYU, have given me personally to trust in God and continue in faith.

This was an excellent talk full of complete compassion, complete Truth and vital experience.
The graduate that he refers to in this talk had his speech approved prior to giving it.

Even if the talk was approved....he is being clear that this is for faculty and students.
I think by, human error, it (the speech) probably wasn't checked as it should have been. That's life, life is good, because we keep learning from our mistakes.

Elder Holland - this must have been an extremely difficult talk to give and I thank you for giving it. I get the impression of how the propeht Jacob must have felt when he spoke to his people about their iniquities and infidelities. Not easy to do but when you are doing what the Lord asks you to do, you swallow the bitter pill and do what you must do. Then that bitter pill feels sweet in the belly. I have a son who is gay and has completely left the family because he knows of my faith. I have no idea where he is or how he is doing or what he has been doing for the last 7 years. I miss him. I just wish he could hear your talk here! I believe it would help him understand where our doctrines stand on this issue. You are a tremendous apostle of the Lord. Thank you so very much!
A powerful testimony! I have a daughter who has forsaken the word of wisdom because of interpretations she got from fellow members. That, of course, led to other separations from the spirit and the gospel.
I think of how much I love my wayward daughter and I realize how much the Lord suffers each time he feels distance between him and any of his siblings or how much our Father longs for us when we are distant.
Thank you Elder Holland! We love you! I know and could feel the hurt in your heart to have to give this message, because you knew that it would hurt people to hear this message. But, the word of God must be set straight. God’s laws are hard, but they are there for protection. My heart is so heavy over so many negative comments I’ve heard about this message and I feel that so many have missed the point he was getting at and missed the love and compassion he has for ALL of the members. Elder Holland has always been my favorite apostle because when he speaks you can FEEL his love and compassion. How many people who are taking offense to his words have actually listened to his talk…not just read it? Or read little pieces of it?? His message was a message of love! Unequivocal love! But…God’s commandments are unchanging.

The part cut of his amazing speech is more people then this full beautiful entire speech . His speech was almost 40 min LONG, all you criticizing are cutting this 15 min part only because you want to create Problems in the community. People ALL His asking is RESPECT for the student members and donor members + teacher members and every single person Member BELIEVES. He is speaking with Love in the entire speech. I speak two lenguajes and I heard his ENTIRE SPEECH several times and I stand up ⬆️ for his words of love asking to protect the Members community. I and many good people believe that what you all doing is WRONG ! You are just creating problems were they not! Just one more time attacking religion believes of Utah people sadly. If you Hate so much BYU so move. We live in a Free country I am sure there is more important things to put your energy rather then discussing for Not reason. After reading some of the derisive comments about Elder Holland's talk, two scriptures came to mind: Matthew 28:37 :37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" And, Mormon 8:21 "And he that shall breathe out wrath and strifes against the work of the Lord, and against the covenant people of the Lord who are the house of Israel, (all those who embrace the Gospel) and shall say: We will destroy the work of the Lord, and the Lord will not remember his covenant which he hath made unto the house of Israel-the same is in danger to be hewn down and cast into the fire;"
A talk of love and admiration of one that loves BYU and the students here!

As an alum with family and students of my own attending BYU, I hear about these things and have been wondering when they'd be addressed. Glad he was willing to talk about it. I hope those who needed to hear this, take it to heart.
I stand with an apostle and prophet of Our God, unabashedly, and with hope that He who rules this Church, HIS Church, knows I do. I am without understanding how any staff draws a paycheck from our tithing support of BYU, and then directly violates BYU’s principles. I love this University and the spirit that pervades it, a spirit that will leave should this divisiveness continue.
I came to BYU from England as a master’s student in the school of Family Life (Sciences as it was named then) in Elder Holland’s final year as president and had such a love, gratitude and reverence for her, that I dressed in Sunday best every day.
I’m so glad to know that my response and feelings are shared by at least one other. We were meant to stand out, be peculiar and be what God wants us to be: a light to the world. We lower the standard at our peril. We break down the doors from the inside at the cost of our own freedom.

I'm so glad we have Elder Holland. That is never a fun task and he did it so well. Eternal truths are always more important than our mortal perceptions.
Simply Epic, the call of the clarion is loud and clear. The unwavering balance of these words spoken is heartfelt, and ring true to my soul.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and is one of my favorite speakers in the Church. And gave a great talk on a difficult subject. I think he handled it excellently and explained it well about gospel principles, doctrines etc.! And I agree with everything Elder Holland has said in this talk and know him to be a man of God!
He talks about weeping and loving but I'm not clear on how to show love to those with same sex attraction. Any suggestions? Since "accepting" is very hard to define. I thinking listening can be a good first step.

I am speaking from my own heart and my own experiences: part of the reason we might find it hard to “love those with ___________” (fill in the blank) is because we see the group as a whole instead of loving the individual first and then seeing how their experiences differ from ours. If you have friends who could be classified as ___________ (fill in the blank), be their friend first and worry less about their _________.
That is my take on how to love those whose lives aren’t like mine. It’s hard to love or understand a “group” when we don’t take the time to recognize the humanity of the individuals in that group.
It makes me think of the WWII Christmas story of German and American soldiers sharing their chocolate and swapping stories. During Christmas neither group of soldiers were thinking about “them” (meaning the enemy), they were considering the man across the field as an individual more similar than different.
@@JesseClaus i like that. Friends first! I started to worry that students weren't allowed to talk about being gay but I hope they can find good friends they can confide in without fear of being reported to the code police.
It broke my heart to witness again Elder Holland feeling the weight of the church versus the world so profoundly. God bless your every step Elder Holland. Never have the words "A house divided against itself (Matthew 12:22-28 and Abraham Lincoln) cannot stand been so critical to understand. I also see the division caused by well meaning but certainly misguided "new age" professors at BYU and leaders in the church steer unsuspecting members in the wrong direction. It is why having the gifts of the spirit to discern is so critical to our spiritual well being.

BYU Speeches: Tyvk 4 posting this content; I am grateful for each speech from Elder Holland. He doesn’t always have the easiest subjects to broach, but he always does so fearlessly and from the perspective of love. He’s current. Those who listen with an open heart can only feel the weight of his effort to fully understand and pass on the compassion and intelligence of our Heavenly Father.

The Spirit powerfully witnessed to me that this statement from Elder Holland is true 23:19 “…to the feelings that swell around marriage and the whole same sex topic on campus, I and many of my brethren have spent more time and shed more tears on this subject, than we could ever adequately convey to you on this morning or any morning” He really does feel love and compassion for ALL of God’s children

How difficult it must be for them as leaders of the church and an institution like BYU to protect the mission of this church while showing love and understanding towards people with sharply different opinions.
At some point we're just gonna have to let the chips fall where they may.
Indeed...we face the same difficulty in our own lives, families, and communities. Such difficulty, if we accept it, dtaws us closer to the mission of Christ...which is, to freely offer ( and take) the strait and narrow way. With so many distractions, it can be so difficult to keep our eye heavenward.
This was an incredibly courageous talk in this day and age to clear up any confusion on where the church of God stands on compromising eternal truth.

Wrong time, wrong place.
Elder Holland has such tremendous love for BYU, its mission and the students who attend this great university, having studied at BYU, served as its president and now sitting on the Board of Directors. BYU is a special place and special places should be preserved. As an alumnus of BYU, I loved the many spiritual experiences that I had and I know many of my friends had great experiences at the Y. While BYU isn't for everyone, if you do choose attend BYU, don't be surprised if you are asked to follow the Church's teachings while attending here. Thank you Elder Holland for this timely message

Holy cow, the comments in part 2 verses part 1 couldnt be more polarized.
With such a tough topic to convey, I think the ice was pretty thick. How would you have given instruction on these concerns?
I feel like it’s because those whom are seeking to find fault only got a few minutes in for part 1. Meanwhile the honest and sincere seekers of Christ will have given their time to listen to both parts.

Elder Holland gave us a stern invitation to defend Christ’s church and His standards and beliefs. I think he knew that his comments would bring the best and the worst out of the woodwork of our church. We have exposed ourselves in our responses.

Elder Holland was Pres of BYU when I attended there in the 80's. What a great experience that was for me. He is the example of love and leadership we can all follow. Unfortunately, his task is great. I've watched as this great school of higher learning has become susceptible to the will of men, and the will of our Father in Heaven is trying to be replaced with values I don't share or agree with. Thankfully Elder Holland is calling this out. Thankfully we can change our course in life when needed. I hope we all can follow the Savior back to our Heavenly Home.

I echo what everyone else has said about elder Hollands very evident love and concern for the men and women who struggle with this issue. So my sentiment is that no parent should ever have to worry that if they sent their child to BYU, they might lose their faith! Every parent has spent 18 years trying to develop the faith and testimony of their child and they trust the faculty to continue to strengthen and further those testimonies. It is unconscionable that there are faculty who, like Alma the younger, deliberately go about to destroy the church and the faith of those those whom they were charged with protecting and nourishing! Sadly, those professors want to stay at BYU because they're not happy unless they are bringing the students down and gaining their own disciples.
What about students that lose their faith because they are bullied of mistretred for being LGBTQ ?That have to continue ti live in secret and shame and self hatred.
Proud of him in good ways. He and his kind are lightening rods attracting vile epithets from those who are prideful, vainly accusing those who refuse to join in sin.
There must be something serious within BYU, an apostle has to speak with a heavy heart.

I really love this message and I am glad to see the comment section so supportive. The radicalization of church schools worry me, especially as I will be attending them soon. Church schools are supposed to provide a loving, supportive environment protected from the worst of the world. All of these people who talk about having same-sex attraction and being hated by the church have missed the real messages. Never once have I recalled anybody hating a person of that nature in the church as that goes against everything that Christ taught. Eternal principles of truth will not change based on how a student feels at a school however. The church provides resources and can provide counseling, but it will stand firm in eternal doctrine of man and woman untied forever. I hope those who are offended by this message turn to the Lord and the scriptures for solace.
