  • In this video I talk about the many many Challenger Scatpack vs 5.0 Mustang roll racing videos on instagram, ticktock and youtube shorts and the boatloads of comments calling Scatpacks slow.

    I often do not comment on CZcams videos. Making an exception here. Many comments I read are often from viewers who don't own either vehicle when a logical comparison is made or comments are made from viewers that have a blindsided allegiance to a particular brand. However, having owned a 2004 Mustang Mach 1(Manual), 2014 Mustang 5.0 Premium GT(Manual), 2012 Challenger 5.7(Manual), 2016 Challenger Scat Pack 6.4(Manual) Shaker and my current ride, 2023 Challenger RT 5.7 (Auto); your dissertation is spot on. I have experienced first hand exactly what you eluded to as far as the powerband and RPM range of the comparison. 60-130 MPH roll race will almost always favor the high revving ~8K rpm of the dual overhead 5.0 Ford. But I don't find myself going 130 MPH on the highway...often...It's 95% light to light. Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger... They all have their niche. My current ride fills my niche for now but I love them all. As a side bar... Dodge Challenger, designed in America and Assembled in Windsor, ON Canada... Ford Mustang, designed in America a partially assembled in Mexico. Great to be a Canadian, Mexican or American.

      Appreciate the comment. You're spot on. That's the great thing about these cars is they are all awesome in their own way. If you can't have fun in a Mustang, Camaro or Challenger you probably don't belong around cars. Different personalities but all very cool. I'm from Alberta, I always thought it was cool that my Challenger was built in Canada! Cheers!

    I’ll take the high-revving Coyote over the LT1 or 6.4 Hemi. There’s just something special about a V8 revving out to +7K RPMs. Easy to mode, huge aftermarket, and just fast.

      Each engine has its own personality that will appeal to different driving styles. There’s no question Ford did a great job with the Coyote, it punches well above its weight and cubic inches. With it being able to rev so high you really feel the momentum of that horsepower in a way you don’t at 5000rpm.

This is were gears also come into play, so with 3.55s, they are definitely less 'torquey' s-2-s, but with 3.73s (which what the performance variants like the PPs, Mach 1s, GT350s have) it makes them stout for s-2-s. But most of the power is still at top end, specially for the Voodoos. The GT500 is a monster all around tho. They're all so much fun to drive, specially with the right exhaust, and that's another big selling point. The Mustang V8 sounds like no other (the Mach 1s and GT350s are 🔥).

    The ironic thing between the mustang gt guys vs the scat pack guys is that they are so close in performance that calling one slow would be like calling the other one slow as well.... Scats usually stock vs stock win from digs at track and mustangs usually win from rolls but not by much literally a couple car lengths. I like coyotes more personally because they are just better to build in boosted applications but saying the 6.4 is slow when you have a stock mustang is crazy lol.

    The hemi is just a better street engine. Bottom end gets it moving and throws you back in the seat. When I bought lil sisters 06 RT Charger I was amazed how hard that heavy pig could move and now I want one to drop in my Dart. With s thousand pounds less weight even the early 350hp version like mine would make that car a beast on the street and it has better gears and a old school clutch type sure grip, I could probably even use the 727 I put in behind the factory 318 with a lot of tweaks and bolt ons.
    A newer hemi or a 6.4 in either car would be great fun.

    I know what you're talking about I'm a mustang man, but I'm also an auto enthusiast. I can admit a roll race plays right into our hands, but you also have to admit there's a considerable the weight difference too.
    Most mustangs come in under 4000 lbs and most Mopars are 4500lbs or heavier. That's why a lot of the hellcat and red-eye packages came w/ carbon fiber hoods and trunks to shave off some weight. Mopars have always been heavy cars dating back to the 60s, it was pretty much an even playing field w/ everyone running pushrod engines.
    You're absolutely right when the dual overhead cams came into play it gave us an edge. I'm a track racer, I care less about the drag strip or roll racing. It's over too quick, (that's what she said, lol) the track also play into the mustangs wheel house. I'm hanging w/ a beating high priced exotics. That really pisses them off, a car less than half the price beating them. While I'm lmao at them.

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT  Před rokem +1

      There is definitely a weight difference, but Dodge has always tried to offset that by adding more power. The Scat still has a lot more torque and a bit more horsepower to deal with that weight, honestly it's impressive it pulls as hard as it does off the line when it's got to move 4000+ lbs. The nice thing is each car has a distinctly different personality and excel at different things. If track racing is your jam the Mustang or a Camaro with a 1LE package would definitely be more ideal. Drag racing is more my thing, I've been doing it for so many years, I love the acceleration and the tension on the start line before the tree drops. Still I'd like to take my car out to the track and just have some fun with it. The nice thing is having an earlier model R/T the curb weight is only 4100lbs as opposed to some of the heavier and newer widebody mopars. Still not ideal but a little better.

      I think the reason the Challenger stands out so much and is so popular is because it's what the Mustang isn't. If it was small like the Mustang it wouldn't have the same appeal. Having said that shedding some pounds is a positive thing, but hard to do, especially with newer safety regs that came out and added a lot of weight to newer cars.

    Ultimately it depends on what you want from a car. If you like power down low and good initial throttle response, buy a Scat Pack. The Scat Pack is a little better in the quarter mile off the showroom floor or if both cars are on drag radials. When it comes to dumb ass fun on the street, I give the edge to the Scat Pack. As stated in the video, the Mustang needs RPM to make power. The Mustang being a more modern design responds better to mods. For example, headers will make more of a difference on the Mustang than the 6.4. The Mustang responds extremely well to E-85 or flex tunes. Coyote engines respond well to adding timing while it makes little difference when it comes to the 6.4. For a Mustang to be strong out of the hole, it needs a high stall torque converter. I race both Scat Packs and Mustang GTs. Races between my car and those cars if they are stockish result in similar ETs. They are largely drivers' races. The Scat Pack will almost always out 60 foot me and I will almost always out MPH the Scat Pack in the quarter mile. The strengths of these cars are also their weaknesses. The 6.4 is pretty well optimized from the factory. Unless you install a power adder, it's harder to make improvements in performance with the Scat Pack. With the Mustang, mods make a bigger difference in performance. However, you have to be more careful with the Mustang. Although you can keep making bigger improvements in performance, you can keep adding power until you blow it up. That is less likely the case with the 6.4.
