Dominican history predates Haitian history. The capital of the Dominican Republic (santo domingo) is the first city of the Americas. The first slave revolt was also there in 1510 which was led by an African slave named Lemba. There's a statue of lemba in santo domingo. Dominicans started to recognize themselves and identify as Dominicans in the early 1600's. All of this was way before the western side of the island was giving to france.
