Cheap Johnson Outboard hasn’t run for over 20 years | Is it worth saving??

- So, I caught the Facebook Marketplace bug and went and bought this cheap Johnson 20. It’s a welcome upgrade from my 3.5, but can I get it running like it’s supposed to? Stay tuned.

I bought my boat earlier this year - it has a 130 Saltwater Series Yamaha on it - the cowling was faded, and needed an impeller, thermostats and plugs. But when I compression-tested it, it came back 130psi on all four cylinders. I like when people sort of give up on older motors based on their outwards appearance. So long as they run well, that's all I care for.

This one was going to the scrap yard if it didn’t sell. The bloke said it still ran but wouldn’t pump water. As soon as I felt how much compression it had and heard how well that motor ran, I knew it wanted to be put back on the water. I guess that’s where the old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” comes from.
Excellent video!! I love these 20-35 HP OMC's! They we some of the most reliable engines ever made! I did some videos on a 25 hp Johnson that looks to be close to the same year as yours. I'm also currently working on another video for an 80's 20hp Johnson which is practically the same motor! If you need help with anything let me know!
My pop had a 40hp OMC made Evinrude, so a little bigger, but it was an excellent motor he had that for 30 years I’d say, doing constant daily use, and it never missed a beat. After knowing how good it was, and hearing how good these little 20 hp Johnson’s are, I just couldn’t pass up on the deal!! This GT20 is very hard to find info on as it is a derated 25, but from what I can see, it is only the carburettor that is different, being from a 20. The rest looks to be from a 25hp. Cheers!
Your parents should be thankful that you’re not wasting your money on legal and/or illegal drugs! Doing these fixing jobs is getting invaluable skills and experience which will no doubt reap benefits down the track. Keep it up mate. 👍🏻🙏🦘
