There's nothing wrong with building up a 4.0, but I'd still rather have one with the 302. I drove a V8 Explorer once and I was absolutely addicted to the noise it made. It was the perfect combination of old muscle car and new muscle car, and it didn't shift early as fuck like my Lincoln does.
sounds bad ass man! ive got a SOHC i wish i could find a set of Cams for it, just for fun, im going to be turning it into a toy for the woods, i got a spare engine that i went through the bottem end, polished crank, new mains, new rings, rehoned cylinders. buying a Gm halfton here in the next 6 months so gotta turn the exploder into a toy!
Ford did good on the 90s ranger and explorers I love them I have an 05 Ford Explorer sohc and love it because my dad had a 94 built 4.0 ranger flow master exhaust 5 speed manual always loved the sound of the 4.0 ohv but mine sounds diffrent from the ohv 4.0 v6
@skateforlife150 Yes and no. With the cam I chose (422) yes, 5.550" pushrods and dual valve springs. The 410 does not require either, but at the least you should put new valve springs in it.
I just did an head and intake port with a modded valve train and it was a huge inprovement. The intakes flow poorly and the best part is it sounds like it has an mild cam.
@TheKing0fHalo Its water that's comming out of his exhaust pipe... It's condensation from the cold pipe meeting with the warm exhaust... and it was just Idling... not misfiring....
@truebassB Because I don't have the motor tuned, I get about 15mpg highway with the MAF plugged in and screwed up air/fuel ratios, and I've seen 25mpg highway with the MAF un plugged and the computer running on a baseline preset A/F ratio.
Nice, i just bought a 2004 explorer, 4.o, but sounds like this, lol, like it has a cam idle. Idles at 650, guess its a MAP sensor and fuel pressure regulator sensor, but, i enjoy the sound, just not the 5 miles per gallon im getting. Runs and runs great after i take off. I replaced plugs, 3 of which were totally toast.
any reason why you went with the keith black pistons over the stock early model pistons? both were hyperutectic but early models had a smaller dish that bumps compression. also is that tuned and if so who did it? im building mine right now and cant decide with the 410/422 cam i hear 422 needs pushrods or wont work well with automatic trans.
This is crazy unique in exhaust tone, judging from a decade plus of being into the Cologne series of V6, or rather Ford trucks in general, I've never heard somebody make the "bwaaaaaam" of a v6, esp 2.9/4.0s, sound genuinely good. The cam adds that little bit more bass to the tone, and I'm sure your exhaust setup has something to do with it - what's the exhaust system look like? Specifically, running an x pipe by chance? Also curious about the rest of the system ofc
Do you still have this truck? I would love to drive it. I had a stock 2 door 92 5 speed. I always though a 200 hp @ 5,000 rpm cam would have been sweet.
Hey,nice truck,i came here cause of the Flowmaster video you have, your engine looks well built. Just a question. Did you noticed any increase/decrease on MPG after the camming?
Wicked sound!, is it an ohv or an sohc, i have the last one in my bronco II with an m90 supercharger did some mods to the tranny and recently installing some schneider cams, hoping to feel the difference!
Id really like to see a video of this running on a dyno. I have a 94 Ranger with the ohv 4.0 and an m62 supercharger. Nothing ridiculous but just something to make it a lil more fun to drive. I dynoed it last spring and it only put 184hp and 246ft/lbs to the rear wheels. Not saying your numbers are wrong but I dono how you get an N/A 4.0 to put them numbers to all 4 wheels. Stock the engine had 150hp at the crank so you would have to do some serious work to a 4.0 to get 292 at the wheels. That would be over 300 at the crank, double the stock output....
How do you legally pass emissions with a OBD II federally certified Explorer? Can you share that with the viewer. What are the upper emission limits in your state for each of the tested categories...ie, nox, hydrocarbons, etc...lastly, what ecu changes have you made.
Wow that thing's badass for a V6 exploder, you should swap a manual into it after all that work. Im surprised that trans isn't already completely cooked. My friend has a 4.0 SOHC 5 speed 4WD, you're giving us some good ideas. haha
BFG A/T's OR General Grabber A/T. Their tread pattern is similar, but I think these look more like BFG's. Plus, with the money spent on this, I doubt he would cheap out on General brand tires.
@@frostbite1991 Everybody to their own, but I'll take the Generals over the BFG any day.. My son has been through 2 sets of BFG 33x12.5x15 s on his 94 lifted Ranger and I just bought my 2nd set of Generals . for my lifted 97 Ranger with 33x12.5x15. 98,000 miles, My son is lucky if he can get 50,000 miles out of his BFGs.
Here is my question is where would you buy a performance camshaft for the 4.0 SOHC? Because last I check they don't make them because Ford never invested the time for adding power to the engine. Even with the newer Mustangs that have the exact engine with a different intake manifold they simply only have a throttle body upgrade an intake. So either you know a person who lathed a cam from the 4.6L? Otherwise this is fake nothing more then a EGR vacuum restriction to give the chop sound.
I really hope your still answering questions,.. I have a 96 XLT, I've currently been looking for the perfect tires, can you please tell me what your size is? Awesome truck man!
I agree but I disagree with the 5.0 builds thought. Its the 350s are so overused only shit you can not go to a car show without seeing 80 percent of the cars with 350s. Love the idle. I have built up my 4.0 with ported heads, upper and lower intake, custom exhaust, custom lifters, pushrods, custom air intake, bbk throttle body, and a custom bwd maf the original went bad. I am running the stock cats, and manifolds because there is nothing wrong with them, and a tweeted stock cam. It sounds great
0-60 time never compared to stock time. It just looked MY Explorer could do the same damn thing, with a hole in the exhaust! Sounds about the same, too!
@wootness3000 Because it's original, very, VERY few people have built Ford 4.0 V6's like mine. I refuse to be another built 5.0 / 347 stroker douche (absolutely no offense to those who have them).
@TheKing0fHalo @bikr1975 Regarding y'alls mass airflow sensors... Mine is currently KILLING my engine! lol Turns out that with heavily ported heads/intake, race valves, a big cam as well as a higher compression ratio.. a TON more air gets into the engine to be burned.. WHO KNEW!? hahah.. because of this my MAF is over compensating and dumping fuel in like theres not going to be a tomorrow, it's running super rich and needs a tune quite dearly. Just need the monies...
It's not, I'm saying I don't wish to be another 302 or 347 douche doing the same thing everyone else has. There are just as plenty Chevy 350 / 383 douches out there as well. Public Enemy #1 why? It has less power then a 5.0 and doesn't sound as nice. And theirs a lot more performance parts available for the 5.0 because it's the same as a mustang 5.0

sounds like a Muscly V8 at idle lol....even sounds good when you mash out looks quick too.
Sounds like a v6 with money in it. V8 would have a noticeable amount more even the v8 explorer for example.

I have a 94 ranger 4.0 with the same cam and valve springs but what size pushrods did you go with im having a hard time firguring that out
I'd really like to know more information about this. What kinda gas mileage does it get with that much horsepower?
@BlowingPumpkins 15mpg doesn't sound bad for the screwed up mixture. I though i would hear about 10mpg highway, lol.
is that lifted or no? i have a 97 explorer i want bigger tires for it but idk about a liftkit?

What tuning are you running?
did you go with a electric water pump or stock
Nice explorer man. How much hp/tq?
It doesn't, already killed the overdrive band and I'm pretty confident the valve body is about to let go as well.
Where did you order that cam from
Nice
what are u tuning with?
Do u have headers or manifolds???
How much was it in parts
whats the link to this cam?
@mruifuif You need much more than just exhaust for your ranger to sound like this.
How much hp roughly?
did you have a tune for all of this work?
or did the stock ecu adapt somewhat and make it work?
Im wondering the same
Super😍
Why?
And i'd love to see a 0-60 run.
I have no documentation of it, but it made 292hp and 270ft/lbs to all four wheels on a DynoJet.
Brandon B what cam should I go with in my 99 sohc?
What the hell did you do to get those kind of gains? that's about a 150hp gain!
Hi, I’m trying to build my 98 Ford Explorer around the same 4.0 engine. Would anyone like to give me any pointers on what parts i need and so fourth.
Jayylive same. Same yr and everything. Lmk if you know any good parts
