I'm sure others have said this, but Lt Michael Murphy posthumously was awarded a medal of honor, which incase you don't know, is America's highest military honor, for his actions that day by going out on that ledge to make the call.
He actually did end that call by saying "thank you, sir".

Mike Murphy was from Long Island where I’ve lived all my life. They made a Navy cadet museum in his name in his home town. I donated to the construction of that museum and his father sent me a hand written thank you letter to me. I have it framed on my wall. Mike Murphy was more than just a heroic warrior. When he was in high school, he stuck up for a kid who was being bullied for having a mental disability. Physically pulled off his bullies after they shoved him into a locker. Also defended a homeless man being attacked while collecting bottles. He made an impossible decision to let those goat shepherds go because he just couldn’t risk killing unarmed civilians. Just an amazing soul all around. Most of us can never be Navy SEALS but we can all strive to be like Murph in other ways.

I served nearly a decade in the Marines, and I would not be mad if a fellow brother made a movie about our time in Fallujah if it was done tastefully, which Lone Survivor was IMO.

That little mantra you heard near the beginning was something of an initiation. A "rite of passage". Its a means of unit cohesion thats similar to an oath. Once you say it (and say it RIGHT the FIRST TIME), you're part of the family. Theyre your brothers. Your problems become their problems, their problems yours. Your enemies become their enemies and their enemies yours. You jeer each other, talk shit to them, piss each other off but at the end of the day when the bullets start flying, they will fight and die to keep you alive and you will do the same for them. The brotherhood in a unit is closer than flesh and blood family. Especially in a SEAL team or any other tier one special operations unit.

  • @VorchaKali
    @VorchaKali Před rokem +3

In the book LONE SURVIVOR this battle was described as being a RUNNING GUN FIGHT THAT LASTED FOR OVER 2 HOURS. During these 2+ hours those 4 Navy SEALs were 75%-80% surrounded by an enemy force of 200+ taliban soldiers. These 4 Navy SEALs were taking fire from elevated positions from almost every direction.
On top of the wounds they received from bullets and shrapnel from RPGs they were also constantly being peppered by the chips and shards of the granite they were using for cover from the Taliban soldiers when their shots missed the Navy SEALs.
In the scenes of the movie where the SEALs are jumping and falling down the mountain that is not 100% accurate. In fact they jumped 3 times not 2 and the mountain was far more steeper then how it was portrayed in the movie. This was done because it was impossible to recreate the falls 100% accurately for the movie.
Also in the book LONE SURVIVOR everytime they jumped down the mountain 1 or 2 of the SEALs broke a bone in their body. Michael Murphy fractured his face and Marcus Luttrell fractured multiple vertebrae in his spine.
With all the wounds and broken bones these 4 Navy SEALs received Danny Dietz got the worst of it.
    He was shot 11 times.
1 SHOT IN THE LEFT ANKLE
1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT CALF
1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT THIGH
    1 SHOT IN THE GROIN
    2 SHOTS IN THE STOMACH
    2 SHOTS IN THE THROAT
    3 SHOTS IN THE HEAD
Early in the battle Dietz right thumb was completely blown off and he had to shoot left handed from that point on. The movie shows him losing 3 fingers but thats incorrect.
And lastly in 1 of the jumps off the mountain both of his legs were broken when the other 3 SEALs landed on top of him. From that point on Marcus Luttrell had to carry him down the mountain.
For his actions in this battle Michael Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery and valor in combat.
In the pictures shown at the end of the movie excluding Marcus Luttrell every man seen in the pictures we're killed during the mission Operation Red Wings.
After numerous assassination attempts by the taliban Mohammed Gulab was relocated to the US in 2015 and currently lives in Texas with his wife and 7 children.

At the very beginning of the movie where the men in white shirts were laying down in water, that was real footage of B.U.D.S (Basic Underwater Demolition School) which is the initial training they have to go through to become a SEAL and it lasts for 6 months straight. Arguably the most difficult military training in the world. US Delta Force may go through tougher training as they are more elite, but very little is known about the requirements to pass Army Delta training so its difficult to compare the two.

Here in the states, we celebrate a holiday called Memorial Day at the end of every May. It is a day to recognize the sacrifice and remember the lives of soldiers lost in combat.
Since 2005, there's been a tradition in fitness circles of doing a workout called "The Murph" on Memorial Day. It's named after Michael Murphy. The workout consists of a one-mile run followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 body-weight squats, and ends with another one-mile run -- all while wearing a 20-pound (9-kg) vest. It was Michael Murphy's favorite workout and it was named after him after he died.

The battle at the end of the movie never happened during the real Operation Red Wings. Marcus wasn’t close to death. The Army Rangers stopped and had tea with the villagers when they rescued Marcus. Marcus wasn’t rescued because of the old man. They Army found Marcus because of his emergency beacon.
There was no gruesome bullet removal scene in real life. The villagers gave him medical treatment and discovered there was no bullet to be found.
Great movie. But things were exaggerated to make it more exciting. Because what’s a war movie without a big gunfight at the end? When the movie was first played for the cast and crew, Marcus laughed when the gunfight at the end happens, because it didn’t happen in real life.

The movie does have some slight inaccuracies. Marcus actually almost bit his tongue off and swallowed it. He coughed it back up, bit on it, and crawled on his stomach for miles. He also had his pants blown off after one of those falls.

funny thing is as much compassion i feel for the lone survivor marcus luttrell, Americans invaded Afghanistan and not the other way round. So its more than black and white and much more sophisticated than what is being portrayed in the film. Human life is precious, on both sides. God bless.

Just so you know, the Taliban numbered about 300 men, the Seals killed or wounded over half of them. That's why they were so reluctant to take on even a shot up Marcus.
Axel finally died with part of his scull shot away, firing a pistol.
    I have no words....

So you girls were asking why they had no Protective gear that's because they were on a long range recon so even there helmets were not ballistic rated because it was just meant for a light protection or bump helmets as we call them. There gear was staged for recon not direct combat.

Looking at this after it happened and Monday morning quarterbacking it...I think they should have zip tied them all together at one hand and one ankle. This would have at least slowed them down and given them a chance at escape which is what I think Murphy would have preferred over a full restraint. The other thing i wonder about is why they did not have some kind of emergency beacon that could be picked up by satellite and alerted their QRF

Excellent pick for a reaction! (Although you might feel differently by the end.) Think of it like this: a 'good cry' is supposed to be good for you!
I think the 'best tears' were those for the kid and his relatives, willing to fight/sacrifice to help him, just because he obviously needed the help! So nice to know that there's folks like that out there ... wish there were more!
The worst part of this movie (aside from the suffering of their loved-ones 😞☹️), is that I've had a number of injuries over the last 30-35 years, and watching all those wounds/injuries happen (for some reason the falling scenes were the worst) ... man, oh man ... I was wincing *so* _much!_ I almost feel like I should break out the codeine! Interestingly, the injuries depicted were actually all verified by the autopsies done after recovering them; that's how they knew what to 'show'!
P.S. - it was interesting that they made sure to accurately render the different gun-shot sounds of the rifles ... you could actually tell what was being fired, by the sounds! Not always rendered so accurately!
