  • In today's video, I diagnose and fix an MTD rototiller that surges and won't start. This machine has multiple fuel system issues that I unfortunately see all to often with equipment that gets used very little.

Thanks. Was unsure if that jet would come out. Idle screw too. Up and running like new. Thanks for posting.

Nice work. I just did mine but ended up putting a new carb on it. Had to pull the whole engine off to get at everything. Given the amount of work I opted for a new carb. Dont ever remember it running so good.

Thank you so much for making this video. Btw for anyone wondering a replacement carb is $15, so I wouldn't even waste my time rebuilding one tbh

Some people like the challenge and get satisfaction from fixing something instead of just chucking it in the landfill. But I agree, replacement knock off carbs are a cheap alternative. Cheers

@@brantsmallenginerepairs I get that, but I get satisfaction either way because I'm bringing the machine back to life, and don't have to waste a perfectly good engine. Then again the carb that I just replaced on mine was quite literally caked in grime and rust inside and out, not much I could do.

I like the challenge of fixing and making old things work instead of chucking it in the landfill. I was able to clean my carb after watching Briant' video. And now it's working great. BTW I couldn't find it for $15. @@wackadoodle8951

Thanks for posting this info! I have a different brand tiller, but the way you present and problem solve will help me get my tiller going. Thanks!

I am working on the same tiller. Those carbs are a pain to remove and reinstall.

Yes they are. The engineers sometimes don't consider those who have to work on their stuff afterwards. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. Cheers

I have a Craftsman that looks exactly the same. I’m having problems with kick back. Flywheel key is fine. I think there is a problem with the carburetor.

What kind of fuel did you use for this? I recently bought one at a garage sale but it didn’t come with a owners manual

So which model is this specifically? I was just given one that needs a carb rebuild but any model number I search nothing comes up. Even tried searching the motor and still cant find proper parts. Thanks in advanced!

I'm sorry but I don't have the model number and I sent it back to the customer a long while back.

Appreciate the video regardless. Mine ended up being a tad newer and seems the previous owner tried to make some "changes" to the unit that werent great we'll just say 😅@@brantsmallenginerepairs

This is the one I got. Be sure to check a parts list for your engine to make sure it is compatible. Cheers

The carburetor is a Briggs and Stratton 498298. Make sure you verify the part number for your machine using the model number of your briggs and Stratton engine.
