  • dition of Let's Fix Sh*!. As the title implies, we habitually turn wrenches on all kinds of things. In this episode we will show you how to rebuild the water pump on an outboard motor. This video features a 1976 Evinrude 70hp motor; however the process is fundamentally the same for all outboards.

    How did you remove the shift rod ? and how do you get at the starter bolt ?

    • @TheSudburyboy
      @TheSudburyboy Před 3 lety

      The shift rod is the hardest part and he didn't show that!

      The shift rods on these motors are a PAIN! There is a bolt under the powerhead that you can barely get to that frees up the shift rod. But that's not even the hard part, getting the bolt back I place when reinstalling will make you instantly want a beer. Lol.

    Hey man...I just did this whole same thing while waiting on the service manual for my 1977 70hp evinrude...if honestly not that bad without any experience doing this...but might I point out the mention you used to put housing over the impeller forcefully is probably how the original came out funny..your supposed to install the impeller into housing and fins/fingers have to be cupped the right way..if your looking at housing upside-down with impeller in it...cupping should be going clockwise then once flipped over onto the top of outdrive it will be cupped counter clockwise so it pushes cold water up to motor...Unfortunately I'm learning all this aswell and 1st time mine was cupped wrong way and those 2 larger holes on the back of the lower unit about 6 inches down from power head should have water coming out of them if impeller is installed properly....Js I learned this myself with trial and error...they doing all this twice sucked but its easier the second time in same weekend

    Does the seal on the top of the pump housing that goes around the shaft,,,does it seal tight or is water supposed to go through there also?

      This motor was in real good condition for the age! It doesn't look like it has ever been in saltwater and I have only used it in the local lakes.

      The prop should spin freely when in neutral. There will be more resistance when it's in gear though, but not impossible.

    I see that new kit has wrong impeller
    That new one needs another kind of key
    You can see on the minute 2:25 the right one
    And the minute 6 the new one is different
    And whe he put the new impeller it has a good bit of play
    I'm new on this things with boat
    And I try to do it myself too
    But all the impeller has to be same like the older one

    • @michaelpatria2111
      @michaelpatria2111 Před 2 lety

      wow, he's using the wrong impeller, the wrong gasket sealer and the wrong o-ring and grommet rubber sealant; did he actually lubricate the impeller; he did not seal the screws; he may have missed an o-ring in the impeller and under the metal cup. wow...
