  • If you own a 1991-1995 Acura Legend or 1996-2004 Acura RL, you likely have a broken transmission mount and this video will help you find and repair it.
    For me, the hardest part is getting the exhaust unbolted. Once that's done, it's really an easy parts replacement from there.

    I have a 3.5 swapped legend and have had it for 27 years now. I put a new trans mount in back in 2000 and covered it in window weld urethane and I just rebuilt my 3.5 (all gaskets ) last year and removed the window weld “cover” and the mount was still new and shinny !

      Considering how similar most products are today (globalization of the parts market, multiple brands under one main owner, etc) watching one car brings insight in to most other cars as the same practices apply. I mean, there's obviously going to be differences, but the same procedures go for a Honda or a Ford, an Opel, etc.

  • @richb313
    @richb313 Před 8 lety +2

    Great video Eric. I have a couple of suggestions from a guy who worked in a different Industry. Worked in the ROV Industry and we dealt with corrosion and many other problems common to all mechanical type things. Because we worked with machines that had to operate underwater at depths over 1000 meters for extended periods of times as long as a month or more we had to develop certain techniques to deal with issues caused by this environment. I will share a couple I think you might find useful in your particular application.
    Instead of using oil as a thread lubricant when running steel bolts into aluminum try a product called Aqua Lube. It is a green grease typically used on boat trailer bearings. We used it in the ROV Industry and never had a bolt seize once we started using it. The advantage is that the thread lube never washes away even after a few years of operation in salt water at depths well over 1000 meters.
    On Rubber parts the use of penetrating oil to lubricate it for easy assembly and disassembly may damage the rubber even if the rubber is said to be safe to use around petroleum. There are chemicals in the penetrating oil that can dry out the rubber. Get some silicone spray instead. It is safe to use on all types of rubber.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  Před 8 lety +2

      Thanks for the tip but I don't use oil to prevent corrosion. I find it makes it easier to run the fasteners into aluminum parts. The oil will dry up within a week and not prevent any corrosion.

      At the body shop I work at, we are always breaking or losing or missing plastic fasteners and clips, or bolts get rusty or snap or are already missing. We have 4 big boxes of used random hardware. Imperial nuts and bolts, metric nuts and bolts, domestic plastic hardware, and import plastic hardware. Saves our butts BIG TIME, and keeps the cost down of keeping a big stock of new fasteners.

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice Před 8 lety +1

      Yes, they do. Like all car makers, there are a couple things that might make you utter curse words, though. As an example, there is one exhaust Y-pipe nut on the Legend and RL that is impossible to knock loose without about 5 extensions and a 3/8" 14mm swivel socket. Also, I've done valve seals on my Legend with the heads remaining on the block - very difficult because of the way the engine is mounted, so I had to get creative.

    i would fill the holes from the transmission mount with polyurethane (carwindow glue)
    with polyurethane in it it will never break again
    it is the cheapest and best mod you can do to transmission and engine mounts
    But caution, by the polyurethane it is of course a little firmer and it could be noticeable very slight vibration.
    not strong but perhaps noticeably

  • @Seegalgalguntijak
    @Seegalgalguntijak Před 8 lety

    Oh crap - I have motor and/or transmission mounts that are "gone" as well. But they are hydraulic support mounts, so they are really expensive. Plus, although I watch your videos, I neither have the tools nor the skill to repair that myself. So I'll just let them be (there's no way to convert them to rubber/metal mounts anyways), and have my shifter jump around whenever I release the clutch... (But one time, my rear cover which covers the lower trunk just rolled itself back in because I stepped on the gas or let it go or something - at city speeds...!) I think the car will have to work without new mounts, until I can afford that kind of work being done to it...

Hell, the motor mounts must be gone on this thing too because it rattles/vibrates at times. but i still love my accord :D even tho its a little beat up, rest in peace body panels and clear coat, now i got to clean my egr passageways, getting a p0401 (exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient), a p0420 (catalyst system efficiecy below threshhold (bank 1)), and a p1491 (egr valve lift insufficient detected.) D: been getting worse mpg, time to deal with that egr

    Hi, with worn transmission mount, will it cause a loud thumping sound when you turn left or right from a intersection etc on acceleration? My 2006 Ford Territory/Explorer has started doing that thumping sound & you can feel through the drivers & front passenger seats & the centre console area.

    It seems weird to add oil to the bolt threads. What is the scientific reason for doing so? Are you thinking it will mean less rust or what? Isn't there a chance of the bolt backing off since oil is a lubricant?

    • @bandbigred
      @bandbigred Před 7 lety

      rust inhibition. Also your main cap bolt/studs and head bolts/studs are all lubricated prior to installation be it engine oil or a specified compound, so loosening is not an issue

      It is not appropriate to use anti seize on fasteners unless the manufacturer calls for it. I use oil to prevent binding when inserting bolts into aluminum.

    I would've used a new donut too. I know you always reuse them, and don't know why. I don't because it's a compressible gasket, and will usually leak when reused.

      Stainless galls easily, so while it may not rust it could weld itself when you tighten it.
