Vaginal Steaming -What? Why? No!| Dr Anjali Kumar | Maitri

  • There are some practices which are marketed well and endorsed by celebrities, but that does not mean they are useful, worthy and medically sound.
Vaginal Steaming is one such practice, popularized by a celebrity. It claims and promises to cleanse the vagina and uterus, regulate menstruation, and ease period cramps and bloating.
But other than offering a soothing warm sensation, does it work?
Remember, vagina is a self cleaning organ and there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that vaginal steaming is useful or helpful , rather this practice can potentially cause harm.

As a doctor and a gynaecologist, I feel enraged when I come across such baseless recommendations or promotions. It is and will always be Maitri 's endeavor to give a scientific view on all such medically unproven practices.
In coming weeks we will talk about many more things which you shouldn't do when it comes to maintaining good vaginal health.

But these herbs helped me solve a problem that many gynaecologist couldn't solve. I'd in excruciating pain (similar to labor pains but worse) for years. After just one steaming session, I did not just feel relieved, I was pain-free. And also, it only makes sense to check the temperature, we don't cook our yoni. I'm just eternally grateful to these herbs. Whether they are stupid and nonscientific, truth is that science failed me.

@@pratikshadaradd758 so true. Most gynecologists are ignorant over the fact that Yoni steaming only heals; whereas their "overly-refined" medicines always cause nasty side effects and all forms of hormonal imbalance and headaches, with only just a small chance of solving the problem. They kept giving me some contraceptives and things just got worse. My menstrual cycle just became unstable after starting their "treatment". There was a time when I would bleed for four months without stopping. I was introduced to Yoni Steaming by my friend who is a medical doctor. So, really, we can never go wrong with ancient practices.

Being a nurse myself and graduating from a MEDICAL NURSING SCHOOL, I would like to believe that everything that we do or practise need not be “ SCIENTIFICALLY OR MEDICALLY PROVEN”
Science is limitless but discovery is very limiting. Just because SCIENCE hasn’t proved something doesn’t mean it has no value.
I am a firm believer in ancient practises, not necessarily all of them BUT will not dice it by calling it baseless.
The more I am learning the more I am realising that there is a lot more to be explored and a lot of stuff we don’t know about.
I don’t see a harm in this specially when you have spoken about the alternative of a sitz bath. That can easily be dangerous too.

“Baseless practice” but it’s given me real results like an unmedicated labor with no vaginal tearing, reliving me of debilitating Menstrual cramps, and has helped me heal multiple vaginal infections.
How about instead of trying to “debunk” it you try it for yourself … or better yet start an extensive research study.
Vaginal steaming in my experience not only connects you to your body, but cleanses your vagina and allows it to clean itself better. I feel more in control of Menstrual health than ever before.

I bet to differ. In practice it's recommended to sit in bath with lavender oils/other homeopathic ingredients for perineal wound healing and soothing. Sitting in the bath could be a good source of infection. Putting the oils or lavender herbs in buckets for steaming seems a healthier alternative. It been practiced in most African cultures for centuries. My grandmother who was a traditional birth attendant practiced and recommended it. Steaming with herbs (depends on types and situations for V or not) in general is also good for asthma, flu, covid and fevers especially with neem herbs or oils. Don't discourage it on the basis of assumptions and speculation because your advice is not evidence based just because you are a doctor/gynaecologist. Have done any scientific research into the v. Steaming? Why don't you consider reaching out to cultures/ practicing communities to perform research and come out with scientific evidence plus changes in pH levels then make recommendations.

I if you care about women health, the worst person you can go to is gynaecologist. They prefer to remove uterus, ovaries, tubes, use invasive methods that don’t treat the problem and often cause more problems later on. They are completely hopeless how to balance hormones, they turn off the system with contraception _ which is again not solving the problem at all. They put devices as contraception to create inflammation in the uterus which causes more problems later on. And that is called science lol. Those steams women have been using for centuries _ this is fact and best least biased study. Avoid gynaecologist- they will create more problems, just to get more money out of you.

Ma'am is it okay to use a heating pad around vaginal area ( from outside the clothes/ pants) to minimise the pain during periods when the sanitary pad is at the place?

    • @bombaybeauty3757
      @bombaybeauty3757 Před 2 lety +2

Use the heating pad on lower back not around private areas. Or maybe even lower abdomen with caution.
If you have discomfort then everytime you change your pads wash with hot water or run hot water with a mug/jug. It will help relax the muscles.

If there is nog any evidence. Wouldnt it be great to experiment and see what it actually does? I mean I dont like the fact that you can say these things and you can still try it and do experiments if science is involved. We should learn more about it than to just leave it there.

Yoni steaming isn't treating anything. It's more like a vitamin for the vagina. It encourages the vagina to purge what needs to come out and put in what the vagina needs. We know vaginal steaming isn't western medicine so....this video makes sense

This is an age old African practice by women for beautification and female sexual arousal as well as for the male partner, and also post partum for the mother. We use the bukhor stand or a wooden netted stand or a wooden/leather chair and light up the resins like frankincense and myrrh and herbs underneath. I'm shocked this doctor doesn't know about this!!! Come on now, we need to do better than this and not ignorantly bash non medical academic knowledge. There are thousands of traditional knowledge that have been and are being practised that only now science is catching up with. This is certainly not celebrity marketing. We have been doing this for generations in many parts of the world for its many benefits and no side effects like bacterial interference etc. Hopefully the general public is open minded about natural habits and practices that they haven't heard about.

I am a bit horrified at how closed minded this Dr. is… I have done it with fresh herbs and with great success. I fear sometimes that modern medicine is so closed minded and doesn’t take logic and anecdotal evidence as meaningful. Disappointed… Absolutely disappointed… While I am a science major myself, I learned, that there are many wonderful natural treatments out there that get debunked for no reason at all.

I don't know how the people are inventing such baseless treatments.. I'm 27 and I always follow what our mothers and grandmothers have been following.. They were living such a healthy life without doing any such experiments with their body.. I don't even use v-wash.. Idk if it should be used or not but I just avoid doing any such thing.. Our body has self healing powers.. Why to disturb it?

It would be hilarious if women find out that the reason for steaming is that hot baths were unfeasible for these women. Americans, a lost generation now looking to others to find themselves. Being a leader is too difficult these days.
