Chloe, I feel your emotions. I got the comments “cute for a black girl” growing up. I love finding books like this because representation in writing truly matters.
It definitely hit me hard when you talked about the “pretty for a ___ girl” thing because that was always a huge fear of mine through growing up and even now. I feel physically ill when someone says something like that to me

starfish is one of my favorite books ever and i found that nobody talked about it. but, so touching and beautiful. i'm so glad one of my favorite youtubers read one of my own favorites even though its not as popular in the book tube community !!
Watching this made me so emotional. This is why representation is so important. And Oof when you mentioned facing micro aggresions even from your friend... I definitely felt that. "Pretty for a ___ girl" is something that still haunts me and lingers in the back of my mind!
You randomly picked one of my favorite books; I love Kiko's emotional arc and her slowly overcoming everything, it's so beautifully written

I read this book two days ago and had the same reaction. Starfish is such an important book specially for us who are biracial and feel like we don't fit neither as Asian or as white/black.

This book means so much to me on a personal level because I could connect deeply with Kiko being biracial since I am too (half Chinese!! 🇨🇳) as well as her personality. I cried watching this video, imagine how I'll be reading the book! Even the art descriptions made me cry a lil. I'm not Asian so I probably won't relate to too many things but I absolutely hate the idea of people hating on other people just because they're a different race, it's so unfair, everyone should be treated equally. But yeah, I just have to read this soon, anything that Chloe recommends I will read😂

I LOVE THIS. I’m gonna try this idea!! I have way too many books - I don’t know where to start.
What I do, is to write in small papers the books that I have pending and when I am looking for a new book to read, I just choose one paper at random and read that book on it.

Your emotions over the representation are definitely relatable 🥺 finding a book that hits you like that is such a rare thing I feel like and it’s a life altering feeling when it does. The Hate u Give really hit me that way when I read it last year. I just felt so seen reading it.
And I used to hate the whole “pretty for a black girl” or “too pretty to be black” comments I would get growing up. It’s disgusting and I really wish people would keep those types of comments to themselves because that’s no where near a compliment.

I read this book around a year ago now and I found it beautiful, unexpected and difficult as well. There are so many important themes in it. Also, I met Akemi and YALC and she is honestly so lovely as well

I need to read Starfish! I read Harley in the Sky by Akemi which was released this year. The girl, Harley, is part chinase, Japanese Irish and Italian, so she kinda fels like she's not a real part anywhere and she doesn't fit. Also it has awesome circus scenes and a lot of character growth.
I’ve owned this book for so long and I didn’t know it was that powerful. I’ll pick it up once I finish nevernight.

I love you so so much. As soon as you started talking about the book throughout the whole vlog I kept getting emotional and teary. You are incredible!!🥰💜 You are so inspiring to me and I just can’t believe how much emotion I was able to feel while just watching you read the book, I’m definitely going to try to pick it up. I know how it feels to be called pretty for not being white and I’ve always struggled with my identity because of stuff like that, and I’ve also gotten the “ all hispanic/mexican look the same” and it really is painful because everyone is unique and special and gorgeous. And just wish people could be, I don’t know more aware of the things they say and kind. Because most of these things are usually said carelessly and they shouldn’t be.
Sorry for the long post, sorry if it’s confusing. I just needed to get these things off my chest as they bother me a lot.

I had a similiar reading experience when i read Queens of geek. One of the main characters in that book had recently been diagnosed with asperger, and at the time that i was reading that book i had also recently been diagnosed.
