  • The Uncalculated Risk is the first film in an excellent whitewater safety series produced by the American Red Cross in the late 1970's. It's noteworthy for not sugarcoating the hazards, and it pulls no punches in laying out the fastest ways to get yourself killed in whitewater sports.
The opening sequence, filmed on the Nantahala River in North Carolina, is a very realistic depiction of a classic foot entrapment. Cinematographer Russ Nichols did a superb job filming it. One of the film's narrators is Payson Kennedy, co-founder of the Nantahala Outdoor Center, a nationally recognized school for paddlers.
The title alone is brilliant, urging the viewer to think about the distinction between an informed vs uninformed approach to paddling - a calculated vs uncalculated risk. This was also the first time that the danger of an unprotected cold water immersion was mentioned in relation to paddling, and in 1977 that was a real pioneering achievement. A solid Five Stars, well earned.

    Love it.
I must have watched this film (yes it was a 16mm film, nothing digital about it) over a hundred times teaching kayak school in the late 70s and early 80s. It was great then, and it's still good, even after all these years.

I can't believe I've never seen this video. I was a whitewater guide in the '80s and of course had been made aware of all of the elements illustrated in the film, so the word definitely had gotten out, but still. Interesting to see Payson Kennedy (founder of the Nantahala Outdoor Center) from back then. As of now, 9 days after this video's posting, there is 1 down vote. I'd wondered what sort of idiot would down vote a video such as this, but then recognized that Darwin Award winners have to come from somewhere.

I worked this year as a bus driver for a outfit on the Ottawa River in Quebec. I decided end of season at 44 to try the sport next season. I have been practicing with all of my new friends. This is the saftey video that popped up in my search. I very much enjoyed it. Reminded me of my youth.

Love to hear this! It's awesome that the sport and community surrounding allows anyone to join and people are willing to teach! I had never done it until my first day of training and its been so welcoming all along. Now on my fourth season of guiding.

It was probably the Ottawa River in Ontario, which is runnable all summer long, a rarity.
