I'm Learning How To Chainsaw Mill With Two Beautiful Maple Logs

- After almost a year of not using the chainsaw mill after purchasing it, it was finally time to break it back out and get it on the Stihl 462 for the second time ever and learn some new lessons. This time around, I had two beautiful maple logs filled with knots and small burls that I have been wanting to mill up for a few months now and I sure am glad I did! In this video I spend two afternoons milling up these maple logs and go over some of the mistakes and lessons that I learned along the way. Its my second time using a chainsaw mill but I am quickly falling in love with it and look forward to getting more logs to cut up!

Great job, the more I watch this video the more ideas I get. If you adjust your first cut, so you get a 10 inch thick slab. You can make lots of bowls with live edges on them instead of firewood.
Thats a great idea! The nice thing about cutting deeper on the first cut too is you can use it for natural edge or traditional just by flipping it over.

Good work second time round, exceptional in fact. I've been getting experience at this skill here in New Zealand helping a mill owner/operator slab the stump ends of. some giant cottonwood poplars on my property. Fortunately the miller has a bigger portable mill at his home down the road and we've been getting 2x4 and 6x1 boards from the straight sections of the logs for construction when all the timber is drier and treatable. I salute you for tackling the Alaskan mill on your own, well done Andrew. Youre an inspiration, mate.

I think stump slabs like that if big enough make some of the prettiest tables. They just have such a cool & unique look to them. Again, thank you John for the very kind words, I appreciate it!
Definitely Silver Maple and are absolutely gorgeous slabs. Have missed your videos and glad to see you put another out! Wood wedges, the taper is slower and they will not vibrate out. Awesome video!
Thank you for letting me know! I always get a tad confused when it comes to maple since there are so many different species of it. I wish I would have poured some water on them to show the full color but didn't think about doing that until I had already stacked them lol The video doesn't really do any justice showing how beautiful the slabs really are. I will definitely be making some; I have some oak that could be perfect for some quick wedges. I appreciate the comment!

When chainsaw milling, make sure your saw is warm before cutting.
The reason is you are revving high for longer periods than bucking logs for example. Alaskan milling is hard on saws.
Also at end of cut, let it idle 15-30 seconds to cool down.
Having a ripping chain the surface of the wood will have less chain chatter marks.
I appreciate the tips and will give that a try next time - especially the warming up. I know with these logs, the shape of the log kept giving me a hard time since it wasnt a straight log. I kept getting caught on the knots which would cause the saw to rev like that sometimes. Not the best log to learn on lol
Great job Andrew I’m seriously looking at getting me a slab cutter too but I’m gonna use mine to cut my logs 10 to 12 inches thick so I can lay out my bowls. That way I can see the grain better and maybe decide how to center the bowl on a wide slab. something for you to consider also I think another way to make our jobs easier. Especially on large crutches.
Thanks David! Thats something ive considered as well. Ive got another maple log right now that I will be using for bowls but at the moment my bar capacity isnt big enough for it so if I get a new bar then thats what ill be doing!

Dont do that! When I started getting logs delivered I was worried what they would think but surprisingly its made them more interested in what I do lol Ive had a few walk over and actually want lessons or just watch! All of them seem to enjoy seeing what I make out here lol

That looks like a lot of work there bud! Great results though 👍 I have no advice for you. But I do feel like I’ve been in a few situations with you where you forgot to check something (ex: 2:17 ) and it led to a “few more minutes 😂”
