We never shelled corn when I was a kid. As I recall, the chickens ate feed from corn that we had taken to the mill. There was a lot of work back in those days, but it taught some valuable lessons.

I have always been fascinate by old machinery. They're built to outlast their owners, unlike much of we use today. Plus it's just plain fun to use. :)

Brings back memories, guys! When I was about 10 years old (mid nineteen fifties), my grandmother had one of those in the corn crib. As I remember, it looked exactly like the one you have, I could sit in that corn crib and shell corn for hours. Great fun it was. I didn't even think about it being *_work_* !

My granddaddy had one very similar to this. Ours was bigger and had a super heavy wheel. The discharge was in the bottom; grain on one side, cobs on the other. I wasn’t school age yet, but once I got that thing really spinning I could put 3 or 4 ears down it before it slowed to a stop. My favorite thing to do😊

  • @mommadirt3557

We had a corn sheller very similar to this on the farm. When we kids got older and started moving on, dad rigged up an electric motor and pulleys to it. It is just one of many things from the farm I wish I had. Glad to see some are still around and being used as intended.

you brought tears to my eyes while watching the video on the misty giveaway. :You have been stomped on in your life and came out the best ever. I grew up in Chicago and poor. I had a father who didn'tlike to hang around too much. Last time he left I was 15 and he never came home after that. Thank goodness for kind church ladies who paid for our milk for years and food stamps that we got to eat I am 67 now and don't have much in the way of material things. BUT I have a wonderful husband of 37 years and a beautiful daughter who is 47 and married to a great man. Lost my son when he was 11, he was special and was here for the time he was meant to be. Guess God wanted him more. I go a little 1 acre plot we are buying and hope to be living on by the end of the year, so I want to get all this gardening stuff down pretty good before I get started. You know us city girls don't know how to garden but I am going to learn. So keep me in your thoughts and I will keep you posted. Thanks for listening to me. .

dad still has one of these sheller in the barn; he put a motor on it. yellow dent is all we grew about 100 acres and we ate the hell out of it ; raw, boiled, fried, baked and made corn meal out of it. there was a gentelman here in the county that had a griss mill and would grind dad's mill for him.

Hey there, hubby said tell you to build a stand for the sheller, so you don't have to bend over so much to crank it (he has one) and yes chickens will eat whole kernel corn ours do !!! that is what we feed ours from the time they are pullets (2 months old) once we turned them loose with the others full grown ones, we raise our from biddy's and my hubby is 74 years old and has never feed cracked corn once they became of any size, like he said after they are about 2 months old, they can handle it fine. have fun you two, love your video's keep um coming. ♥

That is a really neat corn sheller. Also a great ideal planting your own corn for the chicks. I guess with that type of corn you can keep some of the seed and plant more next year for your chickens. That's a win ... win situation. I got to look around for one of them. Great video Bobby. Thank you.

+Alicia Bailey I have seen a 1912 ad that showed two kids shelling corn with a Hocking Valley wooden sheller. . It was what I would guess an 11 year old girl feeding the corn in and an 8 year old boy cranking it. The ad said, " Those kids are bored running around and playing all day. . . They will love doing something productive like this. $9.12."

You guys really are too cute ;) That corn sheller is awesome. I've seen many of them in my neck of the woods, but never one in action. It really spits 'em out. You gotta love old tech! I think much of the old stuff is far more reliable (and repairable) than this new fangled stuff.

    • @mhpgardener

Congrats on your find. First time I've seen one like yours. Ours is similar to the reproduction version usually found today. Mounts on the side of a box. Ours came with a free standing box with a sliding plank in the bottom to empty the shelled corn. Like yours because you don't have to pick out the cobs. :-) Bought an inexpensive grinder, a couple of years ago. Well worth the $20, as it's perfect for making chicken feed. (But that's about all, it's good for. )
Thanks for sharing. Love to see old tools put back to good use. As someone else said, hate to see them turned into "art". Especially when original function is destroyed to become lamps, clocks, flower pots or what have you for "shabby chic". Makes me want to YELL at somebody, when I see that has happened. (sigh)

Yes that looks like nice cracked corn for chickens. . . If you do ever grind some for pigs grind it as fine as you can. . . Pigs don't have a gizzard to grind it up. . . That cracked corn would go right through them. . . If the pigs are in an outside pen you can look where they go potty after a rain and see all of the corn. . . Back when I was feeding commercial feed I started regrinding all of it.

great video! a way to feed what you grow to those chickens and not have to worry about GMOs or other contaminants. did you save back enough to plant this year?
getting more chickens? how about feeding them your trim from the greens and veggies? or is all of that composted? Joel Salatin says that chickens are the best at first stage digestion and processing of food waste before the earthworms and bugs get it. I agree, plus, they are very interesting and relaxing to watch them work over the ground or a compost pile. salute!

I have one that looks a whole bunch like that. I do have an electric motor hooked up to mine. I use mine to hull black walnuts.

We noticed the walnut hulls when loading it into the truck. They were falling out the bottom. I'll have to stick with the hand crank for awhile.

Just watched your July 2011 watermelon and cantaloupe picking. Here is a little info to give an idea on what you can do with an abundance of them. Take your cantaloupe and cut it up in pretty good size pieces. Fill up your blender with the pieces, if not very sweet you can add a spoon or two of sugar, then fill up the blender with water. Blend good and put in cups or bowls and put in the freezer. No you get god and hot and grab some of that frozen fruit and enjoy. Do the same thing with watermelon, strawberries, honey dew melon. Works great any my hubby can't wait till I do some. Now you can go to the store and buy some sorbet and pay a pretty penny. This is so much better and so much cheaper and better for you. Just thought I would share.

It's hard to find these things in good shape that don't cost a small fortune. We looked all over before finally finding this one.

I recall a video (from someone you know pretty well) about Walmart deer corn, ground and made into cornbread. I bet your corn is even better than Walmart's best. I don't live on ground where I can grow corn, or I'd be looking for one of those.

We were talking about that video earlier, wondering how the cornbread would taste with this dent corn. I reckon we'll have to give it a try. ;)

What a happy conversation, I like the machines you show us.
I know it is an old one, where this machine made? do you find any markings in the machines? Any idea? It is very useful. I am planning to plant my own corn and build my own chicken house. Thank you in sharing. God Bless

Bobby and Susan: I am glad to see you using the corn sheller. Did you have to repair anything or was it ready to go to work when I saw it in your truck. After working all day installing a new door in my shed it was nice to watch you two together and see the sheller working just fine. Felt like spring today around here today didn't it! Pulled some leaves off my garden so it could dry out for my onions and leeks which came today in the mail. A new season is about to begin. Bernard

It was ready to go right from the start. I adjusted the setting on the upper intake and got busy. I have a feeling we're in for the same type of weather that we had last year. Every time it looked like winter was over, it came back for more, over and over. The few warm days have been nice so far. But the gardens are a long ways from drying out. We'll do the Spring garden in the greenhouse and raised beds if necessary.

Hey Bobby! Love the videos! I've learned so much from what you've been sharing. You've even given me some confidence to try new methods.
I'm new to posting to the tube. I've been wanting to start a channel for some time, and decided to go ahead and make it happen. I posted my first video last Saturday. I would really appreciate any pointers you could give me.

Will you be growing other crops this summer for your chicks? Have you considered amaranth, millet, or sunflower? That would be seed your chicks could shell themselves and save you the labor.
