Round One on PROJECT BIG - Jakob Schubert & Adam Ondra

- Despite the many great and hard climbs in Flatanger, there had always been this special mystery around "Project Big". Adam Ondra had bolted it the same trip he bolted the climb that became "Silence", and although Adam himself considers it "the real line of the cave", it remained a project since.
When Adam invited Jakob to try "Project Big" together, it was an easy decision to join forces in aiming for the first ascent. Join in for some climbing wizardry, and see what it's like when two of the world's best push hard for the first ascent of THE unclimbed line in Flatanger.

Seeing these collabs between the top athletes of climbing instead of the unhealthy poisonous rivalry we see in alot of other sports is the epitome of being rolemodels for the next generation!
its because climbing works a little different than say football

One "take!" for every draw you skipped is the standard, no?
You really need to trust your gear to skip so many draws. Was all hardware stuff used from Mammut?
That whipper at @27:00 was bone chilling. My soul would have left my body. Jakob skipped three draws and took rope out to clip overhead. Props to the belayer for catching that.
I think that belayer was Domen Skofic.
The belayer didn't catch that. The Grigri did. look at how dude is belaying with brake hand up. If he was using a reverso, jakob would be dead
@@xavierx93 he was taking as fast as he could, and he knows how to use a grigri. It would grab even if it slipped a little if he pulled the rope down (even while slipping). But if he needed to take as much as possible

I don’t know who the hell is behind Mammut branding project or marketing or whatever, but getting Ondra on their team and doing those kind of videos is absolutely magic. And they’re doing a brilliant job, because there’s no point of comparison with, for example, Megos videos.
Anyway, what an amazing era for sport climbing with Ondra, Seb Bouin, Jakob Schubert, Stefano Ghisolfi and Alex Megos pushing that hard. And girls doing exactly the same

The chess position at 14:32 is actually very cool and very sharp, lots of ideas like Qa3 which if black doesn’t give back the bishop leads to a nasty attack
If we go frame by frame we can see that the kneebar slipped in Jakobs best attempt. Love to see you guys pushing each other!
Apart from the crazy climbing i LOVED the soundtrack. It sounded like jon hopkins and that is one of the greatest compliments you can give a producer today. The quality from editing, to sounddesign, cinematography and the climbing itself is next level!

I really respect the honesty of how frustrating it is to try these routes again and again. We all get frustrated with projects and its nice to know that even world class climbers can be just as frustrated but still, eventually, send.
I love the wide shot of the cave with the echos of agony. These guys are amazing.
This is the climbing video that resonated with me the most by far. The mental part of having just a couple more tries and knowing full well you just have to stick that one last move is super draining.
What an unreal video/series. 2 titans of sport climbing taking on one of the sickest, hardest lines I’ve ever seen, and capturing it with extremely high quality. We are blessed

Oh man, watching this brings back so memories of that place, especially as you start on the 7a route which I couldn't finish...the middle section was a pain... loved watching this, but would be nice to see the route from the start more and understand where it actually goes and how long? So amazing to see these collaborations and seeing the strongest climbers of the world facing the mental climbing challenges. It makes it so much more relatable for the average climber to see how top climbers are facing these issues. Really inspiring and full of good lessons! So much respect for this!

@@asdzt123 Yeah, I know! He just hasn't been posting quite as many videos, and none from Flatanger (which is in Trøndelag, the county where I learned to climb more than 40 years ago, so it has a special place in my heart!)

This makes me wish there was an eccentric billionaire who would fund having top climbers do a few weeks like this during the year with the team. Think of how the sport would progress with collaboration between top climbers on hard routes like this with some funding behind it! Imagine if you could count on one week a year looking forward to seeing top climbers work together on the toughest stuff, rather than them coming together for a world cup for instance. I love comps, but this type of collaborative work on real rock is just so much more exciting IMO. Great work to you both!

as opposed to just being broke and making it work. they didnt need a random rich guy to get here, why would they need one to get any further?

Eccentric billionaire was a shorthand for me to say "some great incentive" like there is with world cups (I know money is not the main incentive for comps, but more prestige). Money was a shorthand for whatever incentive you want to place there, some kind of event prioritizing co-operation rather than competition is all I was trying to get at
Great to see two great climbers sharing success together. Very few sports and sportspersons would share that with fellow competitors.
Really great video and climbing. I was scared all the time, those two guys skip most quickdraws. Jakob's fall was insane.
The route could be called something chess related - maybe inspired by the "Sacrifice" in chess where you give up a piece in order to win the game, similar to the sacrifices you will have to make to send this line. I think "Sacrifice" would be a perfect name for the route, and would complement "Silence" as well with its namesake. Also it would tie in with your passion for chess.

i became a climber because of watching Adam's amazing videos, Jakob fighting in Zillertal and seeing Domen in comps later on, and i keep myself motivated every second i see your videos guys, even when i started climbing at 31. Barely climbing a 6b, but in every try you guys give, i can fell the strength, love and passion you and me have for rock climbing. Thanks a lot for allowing us to see you!

The crux of this route, which is very difficult indeed, comes when they are just pumped, completely. That move is very hard, but it's twice as hard when you do not have the strength anymore.
This is one of those videos that just makes me want to get up and drive the 4 hours to the crag every time

It is crazy how rusty some of the bolts in flatanger look after such short time. Shows the influence of the nearby sea? Also it almost looks like it is stainless steel, mixed with just the washer out of plated steel.

Thank you both for such a beautiful struggle, a beautiful story. I love the route that takes us to excellence. As you both have proved, maybe not yet realized, excellence is a complete matter of the mind. Excellence in climbing combines the mind over the body. You both know this far beyond the masses.
There will come a time when the body fails to keep up with the instilled mindset. How you navigate this will wind up being the sum of all your effort, and understanding. I'm so proud of who you guys are and what you've done with your lives! Top notch excellence! Its just that it doesn't stop. When your ready the next step is spiritual humility. You'll have to find that route on your own. Make no mistake my brothers, you will have to navigate this terrain from your own soul.
