  • J.B. Bickerstaff didn’t do anything wrong to deserve being fired. The Cleveland Cavaliers just feel like they reached their limit with him.
A day after Bickerstaff was let go despite winning 99 games the past two seasons and taking the Cavs into the second round of the NBA playoffs despite numerous injuries in 2024, president of basketball operations Koby Altman tried to explain the rationale behind the somewhat shocking dismissal.
Altman praised Bickerstaff’s many successes in his four-plus seasons, but feels the Cavs need a new leader.
“Someone with a new approach, someone with a different voice, a fresh set of eyes to help us move forward,” Altman said Friday. “We’ve accomplished a lot in the last few years, getting to a conference semifinal and we don’t want to be complacent.
“We feel we’re not far off.”
Altman said he and his staff will use the holiday weekend to decompress before reconvening and beginning their first search for a new coach in five years.
Jason Lloyd joins the UCSS panel to break down Cleveland Cavaliers GM Koby Altman's press conference. What does all this mean for the future of Donovan Mitchell and was it possibly Donovan Mitchell who wanted JB out?

Altman failed to get much-needed, bigger 3-and-D wings the past 2 mid-seasons while other teams added Siakam, Anunoby, Bey.

You didn't have to be a genius to see and understand that talent got the team to this point for the past two + years. Coaching needed to step up and be the difference maker. The same issues were exposed, as we watched the same things pop up over and over, with no solutions. That's on the coach, AND his staff. Watching Mobley constantly wilt in the low post and Garland continue to play out of control and careless turnovers with nothing stopping that stuff is on the coach and staff. Not to mention the subbing and game management and lack therof.

If they decide to keep the "core four" together, some things has to happen going forward. First they must draft a wing who can dependably shoot the corner 3. Then they have to get Garland to move without the ball, and be able to catch and shoot the corner 3. Finally, they have to get Mobley to up his game, so he becomes the teams dependable number two scorer averaging 20+ PPG by getting him to shoot and regularly and dependably make the corner three. See a pattern here?

IF Mitchell had even “some” say in whether Bickerstaff was fired, Donovan needs to just stand up! When you “officially” become a “star” you have to carry the responsibility of being blamed for firing a head coach. LeBron, Koby, Magic, Steph, Harden, etc . . . have all felt the sting of contributing to the firing of a coach. Welcome to the big time status Spida!!

The Cavs front office is poor at communicating facts. Altman's job is riding on if Mitchell extends or if he can get them as good of a return as they gave up for him. They won't though.
Most people don't understand what a pierced rib is. Allen is not soft, he has a broken rib that not only hurts like hell. The real issue with that injury is you cannot sleep, and can barely breath. There also is that factor of it getting broken completely and piercing a lung and dying. So soft is not the right take.

All fine and good if DG and Klutch hadn't specifically for the record told the Cavs they will be meeting with them to work on a trade for DG in the event Mitchell extends. They know they cannot play together well enough to win a championship. They are capable of playing off eachother just fine in the regular season and thats it.

--Kobe is responsible for the two small guard failure. Doesn't mean he needs to get fired but that's on him.
-- Morris needs to shut his trap. What kind of a teammate would say that?
-- Earlier in the season, the Cavaliers won 17 out of 18 games. They were beating the best teams without garland. They were the best team in the NBA. When garland came back, J b played him thirty plus minutes each game. The cavaliers returned to mediocrity and j b did nothing to change the line up.
-- Because the cavaliers won 17 out of 18, and were beating the best teams tells me they don't need to make a big personnel move. Just rearrange the chairs on the deck. They are not going to get much for garland because of his salary. So, just limit his minutes and bring him off the bench.

      @garykauffman8618 Před 29 dny +1

Amen! Small doesn’t win in the NBA. Any real playoff team has lots of long, strong players. DG is too small. DM is short, but long and strong. Okoro is strong but short and not long. Altman is the architect of these deficiencies.

I'm glad fans are starting to criticize Altman. He has failed with the post Lebron rebuild. Sexton, Garland, Okoro and Mobley are mediocre lotto picks at best. The Mitchell trade was pricey. Allen is a wimp. Got rid of Hartenstein and Markkanen. I doubt Cavs could win a chip with Mitchell anyway, it's about selling tickets, merch and ads. You can blame the coach, and JB wasn't great, but the buck should stop with Altman if Cavs fans want another title. Altman's Cavs may make the playoffs, half the teams do every year, but they aren't built to win it.

Yeah Altman is a clown and a terrible communicator. He did some good trades getting Levert for nothing, Allen for basically nothing, and noone in the media faulted him for going after Mitchell at the time. But yes, thinking you can pair two small guards and win in the playoffs, by arguing two small guards you already have cannot win together, is a pretty dumb move. By throwing in a guy who plays the exact role in Markannen you can't find later, without trading one of those guards because they can't win in the playoffs, is pretty damning to your resume as a gm or pobo
He also drafted Mobley even though he wanted nothing to do with CLE, but you cannot fault him for that, because he passed up on SGA, when his representation said not to draft him, and they probably regretted it ever since.
