I feel that maybe a novel from olivers point of view, his thoughts and how he felt after he left would be amazing. I dont know about other people but i watched the movie and read the book and always wondered what were olivers thoughts.

Second, Elio was coming into his own and discovering all of the nuances of his sexuality. He's a very intelligent and sophisticated young man for his age. Above par, educationally speaking thanks, in part, to two highly educated parents but like most young people at 17 years old he lacks the maturity and wisdom to fully grasp the impact and the intensity this kind of love had in store for him. It's not surprising that he went through such a roller coaster of emotional range due to the world wind love affair he experienced with 24 year old Oliver. Without even knowing what thoughts and emotional idiosyncrasies Oliver might've endured I'd surmise that he dealt with the love affair with a little more composure and competence. At least it came across that way with the minimal visual aids the audience was exposed to. I, like yourself, am interested in Oliver's thoughts as well. A follow up would be most enjoyable but don't hold your breath. I think part of the director's ingenuity in his vision was to let the audience make up their own minds on what transpired thereafter. We have to wait and see if there will ever be a part two.

I am in love with this movie. And the soundtrack. And the actor who plays Elio as well as his father. I love everything about the movie. And I cry at the end every time, but I let it happen. I need it to happen. I'm in my early 50s and I have missed out on so much in life. It's a beautiful movie and I can't begin to explain how or why I feel so close to it. Thank you for listening.
I honestly have to say if they do a sequel I pray that it has nothing to do with AIDS. I absolutely hate that every single gay movie surrounding or from the 80's had to have two vital scenes...the obligatory masturbation scene and dealing with AIDS. This movie was so amazing because it was the first gay film where we didn't have watch the protagonist disowned by his parents and we didn't have to watch him or his lover die from AIDS. It was what made this movie so moving to me - as a gay man that grew up in 80's surrounded by HIV and death. Yes it was a major part of our lives...but it was not the only thing that defined our lives - just as sex is not the only thing that defines being gay. It is so incredibly refreshing to see an actual love story just about love, which is difficult enough, without rehashing the AIDS epidemic every fucking movie. Love this film, keep it devoid of AIDS - we have had enough movies about that tragic period and most of us would like to forget how horrific it was.
To leave out reality creates a hollow shell......AIDS could have been present without destroying the romance. ‘’God’s Own Country ‘’from Britain makes this film look like a Walt Disney sham . This is not a great film ,better perhaps than the novel ,however. I read the book ( not a masterpiece is an understatement) which took an act of will on my part....I read a book a week as a 75 year- old retired teacher of literature so I’m not a novice in a sophisticated judgement. The film was visually charming ,the script an improvement even if a bit scrubbed. The wish fulfillment of a loving family with a father who may or may not have been true to himself was a narrative hook for many most likely . In many ways the film was like a Hallmark love story by Sparks only a bit more artificially sweet . With apologies to those who were somehow captured by the experience .
There are other films, not of this caliber of course, that do not focus on coming out or AIDS or conflict with parents. So you're wrong about that part of your rant.

I'm not sure where AIDS would have fit into this story at all, seeing as the entire idea is that it takes place in this microcosm over a summer in Italy.
That lady needs an award for this interview. I need her to conduct an interview for Armie, Tim, Luca and Micheal! RN! Also, André was right in choosing Elio to be 17 years old. 17 is like being in a crosswalk, knows the rules but always so ready break them in a heartbeat.

Finally I found this gem of an interview, I read the author wasn't gay and the LGBTQ comunity felt using str8 actors and a str8 writer couldn't capture the gay experience. ( WRONG) I've kept saying to myself after reading the Book, no way this author is straight. Seeing the movie repeated times, I saw Timothee's free spirit and Armie's reluctance as to say he wished he could be a s free as Timothee in their eyes on film. I read the novel and watched. the movie. Both mediums are exceptional. I agree with Andre' the movie itself is beautiful. It is an interpretation of the book. Andre' Aciman is brilliant novelist, You can feel the characters in his book and it seems you are one of them and you are in that moment. You can smell the flowers or feel the heat of the summer as he describes very vividly. Awesome!!!! Timothee and Armie are the perfect actors for those roles.
Interesting question about parents that are concerned about this movie being about a seventeen year old boy. Clearly these parents do not understand the beauty of the parents in this film. They do not understand that any parent trying to control there seventeen year old child is missing out on truly helping that child with their life. When they are young we must control our children to help them learn, but at seventeen they have a mind of their own and are trying to experience life on their own terms. I think the best any parent can do at this point is allow the seventeen year old to make up their mind and then try to help them navigate through their life experience. The boy here clearly knows what he wants and goes after it. The Oliver character is tormented by his age as a parent would be, but Elio makes if very difficult to push away. I think one of the most beautiful things about this film is that both parents knew what was going on and did nothing to stop it. When the mother looks at the gold star around her son’s neck and knew exactly where it came from tells her husband that Elio and Oliver needed their alone time. Then there is of course the speech that professor Perlman gives his son when he is in such great pain from a broken heart is the best parental speech ever. We all suffer pain in our lives, and we should all remember that to kill the pain by pushing the memory out we have to kill the joy we experienced as well. Why would any parent want to remove that joy from their child’s life? The only thing we accomplish by doing that would be to cause resentment from our children. Of course every parent wants to protect their child for life, but at this age I think it’s better to help them than control them.
no coincidence. really was a greater hand playing part on setting up these people to be together. Andre, Luca, James, Timothee, Armie, Michael, and all parties involved. Not your sophisticated sci-fi with visual effects or obvious heroes in glitzy costumes. The simplicity of moments occurred in layers and sequence somewhat interlaced and intensified, also how defining those moments were to one's perception on self and the world around are what drawn me (over and over) to the storytelling in the visual. Agreed, I just wrote a paragraph on that comment. Like the other commenter - I, too, lived through the 80's (came of age in the 80's) and the AIDs epidemic that terrified and horrified us all. We don't need another movie about lost love to HIV or that drama. What set this story apart was that it wasn't fixated on that crisis, but instead just on the love between two people. I pray they don't do another AIDs film, god that would be the worst.
that would be treacherous to the film and the book. Also Luca, the director has emphasized so much of him wanting this movie NOT to be sad, depressing, oppresive... I mean and now Aids???? Amazing adaptation of an okay book. I don't know if it was just the digital copy but the book read like a rough draft. Conversations between people are written in paragraph form without indentation or quotations to differentiate between who is speaking. My recommendation, like the author's, is to watch the movie first and then read the book. This will ensure you are already vested in the characters and can place a face to a name. It also fleshes out the movie somewhat by allowing Elio to more thoroughly read into his house guest's actions and express his initial as well as final impressions more easily thus allowing the reader to recognize Elio's misinterpretations of Oliver as nothing more than someone reading too deeply into the actions of a person they are smitten by. This movie/novel broke my heart. It transported me back to my youth, when the idea of being in love kept me in a perpetual state of bliss. But it also took me back to some of the emptiest moments in my life as well. Teenage angst... its a gift, a curse, and a beautiful thing... to feel something so utterly and completely with every fiber of ur being.. the good and the bad.

I went to CZcams and saw the thumbnail of a video where a woman talked about call me by your name, I put the video and did not see any actor in the movie, I thanked God, because I find it uncomfortable to see interviews of my movies favorite, weird, then I listen to the author's name and I'm like 'what'.
Ditto re the comments on keeping AIDS as a theme or plot in the sequal. Keep the plot about the love and intimicy of Elio and Oliver. We face so much negativity everyday, the sequal should allow us the escape that the first film did.

Amazing adaptation of an okay book. I don't know if it was just the digital copy but the book read like a rough draft. Conversations between people are written in paragraph form without indentation or quotations to differentiate between who is speaking. My recommendation, like the author's, is to watch the movie first and then read the book. This will ensure you are already vested in the characters and can place a face to a name. It also fleshes out the movie somewhat by allowing Elio to more thoroughly read into his house guest's actions and express his initial as well as final impressions more easily thus allowing the reader to recognize Elio's misinterpretations of Oliver as nothing more than someone reading too deeply into the actions of a person they are smitten by. This movie/novel broke my heart. It transported me back to my youth, when the idea of being in love kept me in a perpetual state of bliss. But it also took me back to some of the emptiest moments in my life as well. Teenage angst... its a gift, a curse, and a beautiful thing... to feel something so utterly and completely with every fiber of ur being.. the good and the bad.

i listened to the audiobook (its read by armie hammer) and i would really recommend it! you can listen to the soundtrack at the same time, its so good

I went to CZcams and saw the thumbnail of a video where a woman talked about call me by your name, I put the video and did not see any actor in the movie, I thanked God, because I find it uncomfortable to see interviews of my movies favorite, weird, then I listen to the author's name and I'm like 'what'.
