TPD: Ohio State swaps out nonconference opponent, debating ideal future scheduling model in Big Ten

- The Buckeyes have made an adjustment to the 2025 football schedule, and it's not likely going to be a swap that does much to move the needle. Given the changes to college football as a whole, Bill Landis and Austin Ward look at what the latest iteration of the nonconference schedule means for the Buckeyes and the Big Ten -- and what kind of solution they believe should be pursued on a new episode of THE Podcast Daily.

They should just play 1 Ohio school every year (include Cincy in that rotation), 1 Big 12 school, and a marquee SEC home and home.
That would be a perfect non-conference schedule in my opinion.
Something like Ohio University, West Virginia, and then Tennessee.
Just spit balling here
Tantrum Tuesday
I get it if you could have everyone schedule the same. But it makes zero sense to make your path harder while the sec continues to schedule FCS teams themselves
Can't wait to go to the game to see the Battle of the Bands thank you Bill your Insight is unmatched.
AW loved to gripe. The Big 10 is competing against the SEC for playoff spots. The SEC already has an advantage with only playing 8 conference games. The sweet spot would be 1 challenging game, 1 mid level team, and then an Ohio team.
There is a big reason for this. UConn was scheduled in the middle of the season 10/18. OSU had a bye in week 2 which doesnt make sense. The change allows them to now have the bye week 8.
We have an attendance problem? I logged on for alumni "early " ticket sales yesterday and it was slim pickings. I'm glad I bought a mini plan earlier. I hear you talking about how these future seasons are going to be brutal because they are going to be longer and a war of attrition, oh and by the way make sure your non conference schedule includes more competitive games to increase the wear and tear on players.
Everyone will overlook Birm’s dead-on imitation of Presidential Candidate (name?) who’s campaign ended with a “Yeahhhh”
And... it's a Great Day to be a Buckeye!!
If you’re gonna 3 . 2 . 1 at least edit it 😂😂😂
Non conference needs to exist. Until it has to be change. Schools don’t see it as a problem. Fans don’t see it as a problem.
Austin, I have two points.
1) If all leagues just got together and created a "competitive scheduling system", all this conference realignment wouldn't have been necessary. There should have been some type of bidding system for P5 teams so you always got to see big programs play eachother each year. Also, at this point you might as well create a college foot all 2-3 game "preseason" where the power conferences play G5 programs. That way those schools still recieve some compensation, and the big programs treat them what they are, tune up games.
2) You asked the question why is it hard filling up seats at the arena? Look at the prices. I could go to an NFL game for way cheaper in the lower bowl than what I pay for upperbowl games verses G5 opponents. It's gotten out of hand. Forget about trying to go see a conference game. I live in the Michigan area and was hoping to catch the bucks play MSU in East Lansing and starting tickets on stubhub are over 200 dollars for upper deck. No Thanks.
Play all MAC OCC. No reason to play tougher OCC.
Michigan had a cupcake nonconference schedule last season didn't hurt them. The big 10 is getting better and better got to be careful with non conference game's being to difficult now. The big 10 doesn't have late season non conference cupcake Saturday like SEC does they play another conference game instead
Scheduling too strong has hurt us in the past when all of the other big teams schedule puffs year after year. We need tune-ups. Reduce the ticket price and let the team get a glorified practice. I prefer that to a team that didn't get proper prep for the bigger games or that are beat up for the playoff.
"Compelling football product"
Guess what is a compelling football product for most lifelong Buckeye fans:
Anytime the Buckeyes take the field!
Guess how this lifelong Buckeye got hooked on seeing games in the Shoe:
During my middle school years in the early '70s when my brother and his friends weren't interested in the cupcake game of the year so I had free tickets for a friend and me. Those were very freaking compelling events in my life and helped send me to OSU as a student 6 years later.
Austin, I think you're losing focus on the big picture of why these games are played.
Landis ‘24. Love the non conference schedule strategy.
😢 It was an "insignificant thing for Austin and Bill to talk about", so why did you????
Awesome as always thanks guys go bucks ❤
Need to play teams like Kansas, K State, Vandy, Iowa St, Cincy, Syracuse, Pitt, Mississippi, etc. NO FCS teams. Agree with 12 B1G team schedule or at least 10 with 1 SEC and 1 Big 12 team.
Well Austin I am a fan I want them to have an easy game every once in a while, plus it helps the smaller school monetarily. Now you have heard it.
Wish we could play Syracuse this year. 😁
This is like going to the dentist painful
If bama and uga are not play a 12 game sec schedule then I really dont see why OSU should. The players get beat up a lot more in the big 10 games. The game day experience for the fan needs some addressing.
Cmon guys!!!
This was a weird one, boys. For years it’s always been “follow the sec model”. Now we are and we feel sorry for fans. I’m confused.
Play a MAC school if you need to fill out
The schedule. Why do we give away
A million dollars to a out of state school who
Will be destroyed?
Tress played mostly schools in Ohio. For years Alabama has benefited from playing soft nonconference. First of all the entire sport is still not level so until CFB gets more balanced I don't see a big deal here. Relax Austin
The other team also has to agree
Austin must have the worst internet, like Dan on Bucknuts all of a sudden.
I think the accumulation of physical impact on the bodies of these kids in the B10 vs SEC by the time the playoffs come around is an advantage to anyone but the B10. As long the SEC is playing 2 lower level teams a year we match them until they change. We spent over a decade ceding that advantage to them and missing the the playoffs by 1 game we lost due to injuries from playing a tougher schedule (no I don't buy the SEC being far & away tougher than the B10).
If maybe we asked our more vast youtube subscribers for some ideas for a show we wouldn't waste a half an hour on this really silly topic.
SEC as a conference is guaranteed to have 1 less loss than the b1g bc they only play 8. Having Bowl eligible teams to prop up the bottom .
Exactly
Have you looked at the other teams.
Attendance is not an issue
Is the 2025 roster being taken into account? With all the experience and talent departing after this season is the team being protected by playing a much lesser opponent than UConn early in the season? Who cancelled and why, Ohio State or UConn?
I'm gonna have to disagree with 10 Big Ten games. In fact, they need to go back to 8 Big Ten games. And then play 3 games against non-conference power conference teams. One can be against whoever.
At the end of the season, a group of 13 people are going to be trying to rank all these teams, and if everyone just plays in separate disconnected pods, there are going to be very few if any points of comparisons against teams in other conferences. Which increases the eye test, subjective nature of the ranking process. And nobody likes that, really.
You may say, it makes declaring a champion of the Big Ten harder if they play less members. Could be true. But I'd be in favor of just using the top 2 (or 4 if it gets much bigger) CFP ranked Big Ten team to go to a Big Ten Championship game (or tournament). Make the non-conference games against other power teams count. We need centralized scheduling rules. Different rules for different conferences needs to go. There needs to be some kind of non conference schedule requirement for being eligible for the playoff.
Uconn might as well be an fcs team
Id be ok with 10 conference games
Aw, c'mon. True fans love watching OSU, and especially the second and third team guys, play a game that allows them to flex their muscles, pull off some great plays. Ward, you just want to have games that will make your copy easier to write. Please drop this crap
This is stupid, I don't understand why big programs do this you'd get more money if you tried to schedule a banger and if your gonna do it schedule one that's in your state
Ditching non conference games is an all-time horrible take from Austin
You guys are complaining about the wrong stuff. Grambling State will get paid and get TV time while 2nd and 3rd string players are able to get valuable playing time.
Why should they
C’mon Dudes
Of course bill likes 10. It’s whatever Austin says
Only if you don’t win your league.
Ward, it shows that you haven't played before. yes, every team wants a chip but college football is more then the playoffs. Plus, you can't only play big ten teams. If you did, you wouldn't be able to recruit the south.
Comments weren’t friendly to this one 😬
I think that this argument is mostly Disingenuous, Because all of the top tier SEC schools schedule FCS opponents in November that's completely different and even worse Not to mention the fact that they've been doing it for decades You gotta give Ohio State a break on this one because it's not like they're the only game in town scheduling Games like this. Overall I see this as a really bad take. Maybe it's just that you need something to talk about on a random Tuesday. We get it
Is Austin that naive. Omg
At least Grambling is a storied program. I hope we have plenty of police on hand
Why do you need plenty of police?
Slow news day!
In todays episode of “Ward cries like a baby” we will cover absolutely nothing & throw a fit for 29 minutes.
So Connecticut would have been compelling. You guys sound pathertic
Austin is complaining about what he wants like a 3 year old girl.
You don't hear Bama fans complaining about playing Chattanooga or their other small schools and they play them near the end of the year. Stop whining
All sec teams have late season cupcake Saturday
So two journalist complaining about a game being boring. WOW
I wish AW would actually do research on any topic he proposes. Talk to someone in the Athletic Office. Unless Birm is available, his podcasts become a personal rant. This discussion is nothing more than two guys in a bar complaining , just to complain.
Next time you don’t have anything to talk about just have birm on to talk recruiting cause this is worse than a morning talk show
Facts..💯
Fun fact. You don't have to listen 🤷
@@hbdude155 fun fact if you want to listen to somebody talk about nothing go watch first take
@@LordVadrKush 😂😂😂
Gambling ST😂😂😂😂
Oh my god it helps to be a buy. Just stop. So sound horrible. And Bill agrees with whatever Austin says
Got damn Crying like a lil....oh and Grambling definitely is not one of the best bands..NORFOLK STATE HANDS DOWN 🔰
Hyperbolic much. Good god.
So you are complaining and you lost your mind. 30 mins of hell
Complaining about the schedule. Smh 😂😂 I guess you know all the schools they asked. What a joke. And you are wrong.
Them scheduling a nothing game is like you doing a nothing show. Quit bitching
This show sucks!
Just stop. You guys are thing because you have to write about it. Jesus you are embarrassing yourself
Non conference needs to exist. Until it has to be change. Schools don’t see it as a problem. Fans don’t see it as a problem.
