    thanks for this video! i've been trying to teach my sister-in-law canto (she is non-chinese), but she has trouble with tones unless i use hand gestures to indicate how high or low the tone is, and i have trouble explaining the tones to her verbally, so this video should be very helpful for her!

    • @MtzCherry
      @MtzCherry  Před 5 lety +3

      ReiKoko hope your sister-in-law will find this useful ♥️ the number one is relatively easier (and can do a little revision on counting numbers in Cantonese at the same time 😂) but the beef brisket noodle one might be more awkward (in terms of meaning) which could be potentially easier to rmb 😉

    Tones 7-9 are not just a shorten version of tones 1,3,6; it's not like legato and staccato but the silence at the very end. It works like this: try to pronounce cat, duck and loop but without pronouncing the t,k and p sound at the end. You feel the silence at the end of each word right? That 'ending' are the common part of tone 7-9.

      way too complicated. I'm sorry but your language needs to evolve to becomes simpler if you want it to grow. Not many people will spend the time to learn if too hard. Simplify it or else it will die eventually

    At 1:22 why did [luk9] get translated in nine rather than six? Silly question maybe because I'm still learning. Thaaanks. I love the channel btw

  • @tichu7
    @tichu7 Před 5 lety

    The 7th to ninth tones are just slight modifications of the others, right? The dictionary I use, for instance, maps the tone 9 words to tone 6, for instance. As an aside, I found the most confusing thing about tones is that they can be different depending on how the word is used. The "dip" in "jat dip faan" (a plate of rice) seems to have a different tone than "jat goh dip" (one plate).

    • @tichu7

    Hello.
    I wanted to tell us a short story that I thought maybe would help, in response your other video.
    When I was about eight, I had a friend named Johnny and we both lived by the ocean in Maine in the US. And one day we were walking from swimming and his father was outside and he was drunk.
    And he said something to me and Johnny that was embarrassing. I remember the look on Johnny's face. He looked embarrassed and sad and I wish I had said something to him. I wish I had said, Johnny promise me that you'll never be embarrassed or feel bad about something that someone says even if it's someone close.
    I hope that you make that promise to yourself.

    • @kalinsapotato
      @kalinsapotato Před 5 lety

      Tones 7, 8, and 9 are just tones 1, 2, and 3 respectively by the English speaking definition of tone. The difference is that they have 入聲 or entering tones, I think they are also called checked tones. They're not really tones by the English standard, but they make all -ng sounds become -k sounds, -m sounds to -p sounds and -n sounds to t sounds.

    • @mouse912a
      @mouse912a Před 2 lety +1
