In this video I explain how to diagnose a faulty crankshaft sensor on a Citroën C4, trouble code P1694.
The code description does not forward you in to the sensor direction, but when looking at the live data, it becomes obviously the no signal from the sensor.

My parents just bought a second hand Citroen C4, 1.4, petroil/LPG (LPG system was installed later). During the first ride, after stopping for petrol refill, it wouldn't start again. An error mensage saying: "anti pollution faulty" appeared. The mechanic tried to fix it but on a second ride, while driving(!), the car just turned off!! (and then it wouldn't start again).The thing is sometimes the car starts again, and works as if nothing happened in the first time. I don't know the trouble code that appears on the "diagnostic machine", but I'll speak with the mechanic about this live data/rpm sensor. I will buy a cranckshaft sensor and give it a try, hopping that works.

Don't spend money on parts before you know the fault codes and/or looking at the live data... As you might be wasting money if the problem is something else...

Replaced crank sensor same, replaced ecu same, finally replaced BSM and it worked
Got into this problem yesterday, but car started after lots of attempts and didn't wanna star again today. All symptoms and error code lead to the same censor fault. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully there is the problem.

@@LMAutoRepairs Thank you, but unfortunately, after changing the very sensor with a new one, nothing changed :( Engine tries to start for 2 seconds and stop rotating... will keep you updated what was the problem.

@@user-kn9ib9zm4q Problem was solved long ago, in the rellay box one of them was faulty because was losing contact constantly, was replaced and problem gone. Hope this will help and you will soon let it go. Buy yourself a Toyota, Honda,something else, but a french car...

I have had the similar problem and the mechanic told me to get the BSM unit. Cause he said the problem is the short circuit thingy. It's really hard to find the used BSM unit.

I am planning to get this Autel MaxiCOM MK808 Bi-Directional Control Scan Tool from Amazon. Will this be more than sufficient? Would a device that connects to my laptop be cheaper and better than using a handheld one with a small LCD?

hi i had this problem and ive changed the crankshaft censor and the car worked for a month or so. now it might start at the first turn off the key or quite a few turns before it start had AA out they said it the crankshaft censor have you any idea again im lost?
Idea of what?
If is the sensor, you will be able to see it on live data...
Was the sensor a genuine part or an aftermarket?
Aftermarket can be temperamental...

I think I may have the same problem - but the car does start sometimes - and refuses to at other times. I can push/bump start it though. Maybe a faulty sensor? I have ordered another, hopefully it will sort things out!

lmsvvavr is the code here permanent or would a normal start clear it? the car has been scanned but, alas, the issue has never occured while at a garage (multiple garages).... and a fault code has apparently never been picked up.

If whatever caused the non starting condition, logged a fault, the fault would still logged, even if not occurring or already rectified.
The difference is, the ECU would say if the fault was present on in the memory...

I was getting coil secondary circuit fail message on all ABCD. Replaced coil pack and spark plugs. Driving fine for a sort time. MIL back on. same reading. Goes into limp home until I clear the codes then its fine again for a short time and it happens again. any suggestion 😳😔

Have you checked wiring, connectors etc..?
I can't see any damaged wires. I used a electric cleaner to clean connectors. Sometimes the speedo display will go blank like this (----) and all warning for abs speedo service etc come up and when I take the key out the car continues to stay running. Maybe an ecu issue? Its a nightmare :( I replaced the fuse board under the bonnet but nothing changed.
Hey mate, my partners car crank sensor hits 160. Car won’t start, seemingly very similar. Do you think it would be this? Was originally showing a few codes, after a reset and a trial of starting we just get the same p1693 code
Could be... just don't buy cheap aftermarket parts...

Hi, Happy New year! I have two fault codes on my Peugeot 807: 0480 - fan assembly (GMV1) relay control chopper; 0481 - fan unit relay control (fan 2) low speed. The fan comes on immediately I start the car, which supposed not to be so. Please what could possibly be the cause.

I'm having this problem on my Citroen C4 1.4 2008 (hard to start and turns off by itself) after scan it shows P0366 crank shaft sensor. Is the sensor bad?

Update
The part is now installed, the car now is perfect.
Original part was made by Siemens, but they didn't have it, so I bought Febi brand.
Now I have a problem on the starter maybe because I tried to start the car several times before I find the problem. Now the starter makes a noise but the motor don't turn. But if I stop cranking and do it again it cranks ok. I do think the bendix its bad, what do you think about that?

I have a c4 1.6 hdi and the engine doesn't do anything at all. It doesn't even crank. I put the key and when I try to start nothing happens. Battery ok checked. Any ideas ? Thanks

Yes it does like nothing is wrong. (Sorry for my English) It so strange because battery is Ok (even I have tried to start the car with the battery clamp with no success). However, there is a message that says "eco mode active" which, as far as I know, it appears when there is no battery. Today I have tried to start the car. Firstly, the car cranked twice or three times every time I turned the key on, but at the end, nothing happens, like there was no more battery but I confirm that the battery is ok, because if it was the battery I would have started the car with the battery clamps. Could it be the BSM (under the hood with all the fuses)? I forgot to say that the car stopped suddenly when the owner was driving it and since then, no way to get the car started. Do you know if there is any relay that controls the electrical start of the car or something like that? Thank for you videos, I watch them all.

There is main power relays, and the starter motor relay...
I would start with the basics first..
Check fuses and test relays, both one by one...
Check accessible plugs, like the BSM plugs, remove them and inspect for corrosion, poor contact etc...
Tackle the crank issue first...

Yes I have already scanned the car but nothing. Fuses cheked all fine, just relays I check them tomorrow.

Thanks for video, i have same issue on C4 1.6 VTR+ (06) after being in for CAM belt change.
Couple of weeks before CAM change, the “Depollution System Faulty” alert came on, couple of days later the Engine management light (yellow). When having CAM belt changed, asked them to check Depollution error , came back with Unknown Error. 3 days later, out of the blue it wld not start, same as video. Had the Crank shaft sensor replaced, Ran for 5 mins then cut out, now won’t start again. Mechanics thinks maybe EMS box?? Any suggestions, thanks in advance

Mobile Mechanic has not mentioned any codes, he changed sensor from experience. He is taking it to a garage tomorrow with more sophisticated monitor. Will let you know what happens. Worry is he thinks might be EMU, which from video’s like yours, not sure it is? Any idea how much EMU would cost? Check wiring... if you have one, measure the output of the sensor with the oscilloscope... to ensure you have signal, and you didn't get a faulty 'new' sensor...

@@LMAutoRepairs so i have a Citroen c4 07 1.6 similar to the on in the video, the speedo on the car isn't working and im wondering if you have ever came across this problem. when i turn the ignition the engine starts and everything works, the speedo has a number 0 then goes off and when it drives it doesn't register the movement of the car and show the speed.

That can be a few different things...
No other warning lights on the cluster?
You might need to scan the car and go from there...
It has an ABS light on that's it. Other than the standard seatbelt lights

The speed is most likely coming from the ABS... if the ABS is reporting a fault... there you have it...
Scan the car and go from there... see what the ABS module is reporting...
