    I use the aquarium water treatment to make my tap water safe. Tap water is just so much easier than keeping up with distilled/rain water. My plants don’t seem to mind

    I'm exactly the same - if I have a plant I can't get to grips with, I put it in pon 😆 It totally saved my Syngonium mini pixie, and I have some variegated strawberry begonia babies that are going amazing in it (I always eventually rot the roots off the soil ones, however careful I am). I love how low-maintenance it is. My other subtrate hack is tree fern fibre. Worth every cent. That stuff is magic and promotes new root growth like crazy.

    Loved this video. I lost my platinum i had just began my journey . My mameii started dying i chopped and put in moss with restaurant container. I now have 4 babies. So proud. Spaghnum is great. Purchased from etsy the plants were ridiculously tiny. I put them in moss two days ago looking at this video tells me to go and squeeze so water out. So please don't think your watering videos are to long. You give out planty wisdom. Thank you

    What about sticking a plastic cup with holes poked out on top of the poles and filling it with water?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by a plastic cup? I see some people use plastic water bottles but I'm not a fan of them because you have to have the moss filled to the top or it just spills out and I hate having to flip them. I find the globes a lot easier for me!

    • @allisontuttle8216
      @allisontuttle8216 Před 11 měsíci +1

      So you take a plastic cup and poke holes out of the bottom like with a soldering iron and then you put it on the top of your moss pole then fill it with water and it slowly drains out of the holes on the bottom. Probably like the water bottle but with the water a little more slowly released

    Wow so many plants. I definitely would have a hard time in taking care of them and the watering aswell. I probably would choose a substrate that doesn’t need to be water so regularly. Lucky i now only collect plants that are low maintenance and doesn’t need watering until every 3 weeks during the growing seasons. Winter colder seasons i only water once a month.

I did 9 yesterday and stopped because I ran out of my mix :( Have you tried just using the upside down water bottles with holes drilled in the caps to water your poles? That seems easier so I will experiment with those. Also, do you use your standard mix for Calathea also? I know they like moisture so wasn’t sure if you adjusted for them? I’m reporting all mine. • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thank you!! Stratum is temporary so I only use it to propagate in. Just like using moss or perlite then once I have enough roots I will pot it up. Pon is pretty new to me still but a lot of different plants love it! I will do mostly alocasia and anthurium and some stubborn philos that have been difficult for me to grow in soil. Calatheas love that consistent moisture too! Some people don't want to grow in semi hydro and plus the costs of pon can get expensive if you buy lechuza brand. I was always a soil person so I am glad I am branching out some to try new things. I still love soil and a really chunky mix for moss poles so sometimes I just do whatever I feel in the moment :)

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I highly recommend nematodes for fungus gnats. I made a whole video on them not too long ago. I have zero gnats now in my soils. It's soo worth it. I can link it here: czcams.com/video/JRW9-CZSou8/video.html
      For rehabs with root rot I like to use moss, I can give them 100% humidity to help them re root and it works so well. For stratum - I will do cuttings or corms most often. I think either way is fine and sometimes I just decide it the moment :)

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I just leave it on 😬 You can make it more or less diluted if you want to so I don't really get any residue since mine is more diluted. The most important thing is letting it sit for maybe 5 minutes so it can work so you don't want to rinse it off right away. Just the action of hosing off the plant leaves with water can knock so many pests off :)

      Hi - a lot of them I rehabbed in stratum first then transferred over. Stratum to pon does really well and I find moss to pon does well too with the ones I did. The ones from soil I made sure to rinse off all the dirt first but I still had some rot/root shedding with those while they were adjusting to water and growing new roots so it happens!

    How do you manage to keep up with the cleaning of humidifier ? i used to use one but then i found out it has to be deep cleaned with bleach every 3 - 5 days because of bacteria and minerals that can grow there, get released in the air and make us sick. Some people apparently were hospitalized because of it.

      Sometimes I get lazy with it! I try to clean it out once a week I usually use vinegar but if I noticed mold I might use hydrogen peroxide. I don't like using bleach if I don't have to. I never noticed them before on it so it makes me think it was something fungal or bacterial. Sorry about your plants! I end up cutting a lot of leaves off to reduce spread :(

      Here's the recipe I use:
      Combine
      4 cups Water
      1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea Tree soap
      1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap
      1/2 cup 70% Alcohol
      1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide
      Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).

      No certain ratio! I just mix some up in my spray bottle lol. It's very diluted so I don't rinse it off or anything. You can use several tablespoons in a gallon if you want to but I just squeeze some haha.

    Hi! Do you not run your central a/c in the house or do you just close all the vents in your plant room? Do you usually always keep the door closed? You mentioned that your plant room was close yo 80 degrees.

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci

      Ac runs all the time in the summer :) only one vent and it stays open. Door always stays open for airflow. It’s hot because it’s the south side of the house which gets full sun + I have a ton of grow lights in one small room. The temperature just stays warm in here 🫶🏻

    Can I use beneficials for spider mites if I’ve used systemic insecticide? I don’t know if the systemic will kill the beneficials. 😩

    • @meowk5812
      @meowk5812 Před 11 měsíci

      Yes you usually want to wait about 4 weeks after you have treated your plants with the systemic before you release the beneficials

    • @plantsbymelissa

      Yes, like the other commenter said you have to wait several weeks. It can definitely harm the good bugs :)

    1:00:47 that moss looks different, did you change brands?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +1

      No, it's the same! It was reused moss another prop I had. I've been using the same moss for awhile now. Some bags are more "woody" than others lol. I love the new Zealand spagmoss brand it's seriously some good quality but I have't bought any in a long time because it's more expensive and I find this cheaper moss to work just the same :)

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yes! It's a silver sword :) I grew this from nodes off of my other plant I had. It randomly started yellowing and I had to chop it all back. Figured I would give it one more go to try and grow it. It seems more finicky lol but I lovee the color!
