Thank you everyone for watching my video with my very expressive voiceover!
For exclusive behind the scenes,.. and some content that is free for everyone check out my patreon page: patreon.com/Homemade_ecoystems
Yes very expressive
im here
I spent quite a bit more time on Rumble these days as YouLube loves censoring so much. I forget that there is still good content here, such as your channel! Without your personality these videos would only be a quarter as good!
The submarine part was ft up
You might like the short story "Microcosmic God" by Theodore Sturgeon. I'm sure you can find it somewhere. It's one of my favorites, actually. Sorry for the re-post if you actually read my original post.
As a farmer, I will defend these fellas until the bitter end. Soil mixers, soil aeraters, soil cleaners, heavy metal processors, soil health indicators, and they have wonderful poop. Also they are adorable and I love digging down a bit or moving a sandbag or some straw and finding loads of these guys.
Currently the indicator of health of my compost pile. Which looks a lot like this video, just not so up close.
Heavy metal processors?
@@zer0nix yep! They can take up heavy metals and salts out of the soil which can be left there through artificial fertilizers and lack of crop rotation or just natural processes sometimes and digest them and turn them into a different form that can be taken up by plants or used in themselves or pooped and eaten up by the microorganisms in the soil.
@@Beshe-tx1liThat is so stinkin rad.
How would recommend we best enjoy their poop?
"Roly Pollies are monsters"
I mean, considering how we all treated them as kids, is it a surprise they turned into villains?
I was always nice to them and played with them when I was a kid. They fascinated me. lol
If they have shared history I was their Vlad Impaler....
I always just rolled them in my palm and then put them back in grass
I was nice to them. I put them in a jar with no food or water🤣
(I was five, I thought I was being nice).
LOL!
For those that don't know Pill bugs or roly polys- they are actually crustaceans or land shrimp. Not insects. They range freely unhindered in my house except by the spiders who manage the population apparently, judging by their little empty shells I find in the corners
🎵 🎶 A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean 💗 💕 🎵 🎶
HUH? And we learn even more 😮
I find them in my basement but I always thought they just died from dehydration as they weren't anywhere near a spiderweb. I always feel sorry for the wood beetles and spiders that had fell into my plastic storage boxes and they couldn't get out.
Maybe the millipedes or centipedes I have seen killed the isopods,as they are fairly large specimens.

Either a plant or succeeding at camouflaging
Your humor is so dry, it could make sandpaper feel moist. I love it! :D
🤣lol
its as dry as dirt but I enjoyed the video alot :)
His voice is dry as the Sahera desert.
I read your comment right before he got going and omg you are so right, lmao. 😂😂😂

I held dirt ransom in a jar because of this guy, life changing content.

You should probably change the dirt out for some money. Eventually you will afford to get your sister back.
Roly Polies are also extremely well protected. One night, while living in SoCal, I witnessed a large adult fall into a Black Widow's web and watched the large spider come out and bite on it for a long time....at least for 1/2 hour, when finally, the Widow cut it loose and the Roly Polie dropped to the ground. A few minutes later, it unfolded and unhurriedly walked off as if nothing happened. I was really surprised it actually survived the encounter. I wonder if the bigger, stronger Australian RedBack Widow, which I have seen in action against many other bugs without losing a battle on another You Tube channel, would be successful in eating a Roly Polie.
That is actualy crazy!
Woodlouse spider will kill the pill bugs easily. Probably kill the red back as well if not in it's web. They kill other spiders if they get too close. Woodlouse spiders are quite cantankerous.
I read "large adult" thinking you meant human... and I have a pretty good imagination
@@dragonmage372 Now that is funny!
They're not called a redback widow, just a redback. Fun fact: only the females have the red marking on their back.
As soon as he said “I’m used to filming small things” I knew it would be a pickle joke. What a legend.
Put a teeny tiny Ferris wheel in with the ants. That way they'll have something to do since they're clearly not building tunnels. Maybe add a gopher or prairie dog to show them how to tunnel.
Lol, good idea🤣
This is the first video I am watching from this guy, and I think its safe to say that I love this man, the humor is the perfect co-worker for the thrilling action that is within a terrarium.

"...prefer to eat wood. Just like your mom."
This had me laughing so hard l got a funny look from the waitress. That delivery is beautiful 😘
I had no idea what I signed up for, but this video was better than I could have imagined, amazing content, I think I found a gem in the youtube pile today!
Thank you!!
I once found a large, vicious-looking spider (Segestria florentina) that was being attacked by ants. I rescued it, and placed it in a flowerpot in my back yard.
The next morning i went to check up on it. It was still there - and being eaten alive by a pillbug. The pillbug had eaten half its abdomen.
I did not want to know that those spiders exist where I live, but fascinating
Nature is metal
This is like that joke in every comedy where the naive kid releases their pet to be free in the wild only for it to immediately get eaten.
@@saucevc8353 I remember seeing a video of these kids releasing a formerly injured rabbit only to then be swooped up by a hawk. Honestly it was hilarious watching it.
Nature is viciously violent and I love it. Too many soft-ass creatures in nature these days with their loathsome liberal agendas to make the world a non-violent passivist pussy.
@@dragonace119Yeah real hilarious.
I came here to defend rollie-pollies! I am so offended on their behalf! In no way am I over compensating for all the times I threw them into spiderwebs growing up or accidentally crushing them when trying to force them open.
It's a good thing you're not since that would be terrible.
@@neb6why would you
(thinks about all the snails I crushed) 😭 it's okay, we were monesters then lol
@@2405phuongr else the legendary faint isopod will rise from the ocean and come in your room while you sleep to eat all your chips
I remember throwing bugs into spiderwebs as a kid. I found that the rollipollies that can roll into a full complete ball annoyed the spiders. They would just throw them outa the web. Good times! :D
...Well not for the bugs i guess... :D
I use pillbugs to make compost out of my kitchen scraps. They do a great job, and they also eat the eggs of stink bugs and earwigs which i hate. They break down the larger chunks of scraps so that the red wiggler worms that I have down below are able to further convert the scraps into wonderful dark rich compost for my garden.

I immediately thought "thats not the only tiny thing you film" and boom u went there. Thats a like from me sir
One of the only youtube channels that make me laugh out loud while i'm alone. Great videos man, keep it up!
Thank you!
There woodlice and do not roll into a ball.
@@HOLLASOUNDSPerhaps the woodlice should take a lesson from the wood eating millipedes.
@@TheRestedOne I had a wormery and these little Millipedes used to reproduce in there until a rat started going in there, and eat most of the worms and Millipedes. Rats and mice can live off of just that alone.
Woodlice are cute because they lack the skittish nature of most bugs, and they have armour to cover up the creepy crawly bits.
You are out of this world. At least that’s what the ants prolly think. Love your videos. The voiceovers are really closer to what I’m thinking when I watch most videos. Thanks!
As a biologist, I can confirm that if it is not moving and if it is green, it can be a plant, a green mailbox, or if you live in Brazil, it can be a motorless green Volkswagen Beetle.
When I first watched one of your videos I thought it'd be a one-hit wonder. There's no way you could replicate the humor, the camera work, and the skill over and over. And yet, here we are.
Thx for confirming. Dudes a 1st day legend. Dry humor and side jokes. He should narrate everybody stuff.
I've drawn the exact same conclusion about centipedes: those Fers _are_ fast, especially when they're loose in your house.
Definitely my favorite ecosystem type youtuber. Unique, and so funny. The monotone adds so much
This was the coolest and video I've watched all year. Maybe even the past 2 years. Your dry humor is everything 😅
This reminded me and made me think of all the wholesome things in my isopod colony, an Isopod couple once took their kids out to eat a carrot slice I placed, and both parents were both nuzzled together and it was sooo cute!!
Did the kids eat free? Betcha that's why they brought them. It was supposed to be date night 😢
@@katiekane5247😂👌
Maybe they were hungry and competing with the millipedes for food? Meanwhile the centipede is highly suspect. No word on what it's doing when your back is turned..Great content, thank you.
Love your subtle humor! Plus....great video!

Your humor is definitely on point ! This is both hilarious and educative !
Ever consider setting up a live stream with the tank(s)? Just leave it rolling and see who pops in. I know some dorks will leave their tv on an aquarium or wild life livestream while not in use. I could see a cool terrarium doing well in that admittedly small market.
I definitely want to get a camera for that!
That would be super cool not gonna lie
Sounds like Sam Hyde’s Fishtank but with bugs
I WOULD WATCH THIS 100%
One of those dorks checking in.
@HomemadeEcosystems, I have a duck stream on Twitch on all day while I work usually. It gets maybe 300-400+ viewers a day usually.
Would be interesting to see what you can get together with a few different angles maybe.
Heya Homemade, I happen to have started keeping isopod colonies recently and I can tell you that if the isopod species is porcellio law is, they're very voracious and protein hungry compared to most species. It's not uncommon to pick on smaller critters than themselves but they typically prefer dead or dying critters. I feed mine the odd cricket but they're still new so they don't swarm like they should yet. Keep up the good vids!
- Ashley Bonner
Good to know! Thanks!
@@HomemadeEcosystems no worries! there was a typo, it should be porcellio laevis, not law is lol all isopods can get a bit peckish for protein cos it helps produce and develop more brood, similar to ants. Don't get 'too' mad at their cannibalistic nature, perhaps consider offering a prekilled insect to tide em over xD
@@ashleybonner5423personally I feed my isopods fish food. It’s a good source of protein and it’s rather cheap
I enjoyed the video and I enjoyed your humor. That was just plain fun and entertaining. Thanks.
Your videos are fascinating, educational, captivating, and entertaining. Very rarely do videos have all 4 of those qualities.
I have a prosperous colony of isopods in a potted plant at my office, that I have had for many years. Although there are also millipedes and rove beetles sharing the space that are thriving, I agree the isopods are monsters. They eat their shed skins. They eat their own dead. Once I rescued a wounded one, and put it in the colony in hopes it would recover, and the others ate it alive. This is even though I keep them well provided with dead leaves, bits of fruit, and their favorite thing, cheese. I have not seen them eating the millipedes, but the millipedes are very small, so maybe I have just not caught them at it yet.
as a biologist, you should know there is no evil in nature, they are filling a niche
Yeah you are kind of right
Don't believe everything you read Pop!
As in, the "evil niche" is empty, so they step in to fill it?
Yeah, if there's a niche for eating babies, something's gonna fill it.
Wow, the humor went right over your head!

I really like how your pond in the terrarium is a plastic container! I've tried several ways of making ponds and failed, so I'm going to try this next!
It is glass, with plastic you have a chance thar microplastics leach in the water over time so I would avoid that 😁
Awesome. I like your sense of humor. Keep it up man. Thanks
Another great video, hilarious narration! Speaking of ant pheromones - I once picked up a dead bug part (with tweezers) that huge carpenter ants were eating, and I dropped it, and the ant or two that were on it, into the midst of several others that were eating a bigger part of the bug. When it hit the ground, they ALL ran in 10 different directions from that point. Pretty amazing to see.
Nice vid keep up the good work 👏
Thanks!
Hey by the way if you want the ants to move into the actual ant farm that’s attached to that glass box you should take the foil of of the test tube that will give them a signal to move out of it and it will probably take a few weeks or more for them to move out mabye less
Yes I know that would speed up the proces but that would stress them out a lot I think
@@HomemadeEcosystemsAnts don't seem to be bothered by much and just get on with what they have to do in my experience.
You are absolutely hilarious. I was so not into bugs until I came across your videos by accident. You make the video so interesting.

I like your humor, it cracks me up!
Great videos!
Interesting to hear what others called these as children, we called them “Chooky pigs”!
Thanks !
I can’t tell because of the foil, but I’m not sure if your ant population grew enough to the point where they need to clear out.
If you really want to encourage them to move out, remove the foil, they don’t like light.
Speaking of, I would suggest making a cover for the glass so when they move into the sand area where you wanted them to dig, they can do so comfortably without feeling exposed to the light. Something similar as to what AntsCanada did for his Volcano setup.
I’m not sure if you’ll be making another terrarium soon, but I have an idea of one if you have room, a terrarium island (tank) set up in an aquarium.
Basically a tank within a tank, the aquarium acts like a moat and use that as the critters water source instead of the high quality pond you have currently.
Just an idea.
Edit: I forgot to add, ants LOVE and need sugar, experiment what kind of jello they like, if you’re feeling up to it, make some yourself, some fresh live prey would be good for them too, they’re hunters and gatherers, more lively if they hunt something that’s struggling.
I don't realy want to force them out because that might stress them too much. The terrariums is against the wall when I'm not filming so they aren't exposed to light. I like the idea of an island terrarium very much! I was already thinking about a way to do something like that
@HomemadeEcosystems ah, I see, I didn't realize it was against the wall, nvm on that part then. And I get why you don't want to stress them out, but I've done it with my Honeypots and Fire Ants, but you do what you are comfortable with, just giving my suggestion and experience, but in the end of the day, they're your babies so you make the call (:
And awesome, glad to hear that (:
